History awaits Celtic after semifinals

132

In an already-impressive season, Celtic’s demolition of Aberdeen at Hampden was an exceptional display.  It took until the 29th minute for Kyogo to open the scoring, but the tone of the game was evident from the opening seconds.  Celtic bossed the match throughout and it was only a matter of time before the goals came.

Last week we discussed that Aberdeen had not, until then, played two games in a week since July.  That extra game midweek may have taken its toll, although Jimmy Thelin was having none of it, excuses were refreshingly batted away.  What is clear is that Aberdeen looked like one of the poorer sides we have faced this season.  Their next outing (home to Dundee on Saturday) will have added importance.

After an indifferent opening period, when he fluffed crosses and twice failed to connect with an attempt on goal, the semifinal became the Daizen Maeda Show.  Hampden is big and Aberdeen made the mistake of competing against Celtic high up the field.  This allowed Daizen to burst into space like no one else in our game can.  Three goals and an assist was an appropriate award.

Arne Engels is another who enjoyed covering the “one neutral acre” of Glasgow.  His relentless pressing and tracking back stopped Aberdeen from settling into any kind of pattern of play.  His corner kicks are also proving valuable, as Cameron Carter-Vickers demonstrated with the opening goal.

The script is written for Celtic to take the final next month, but I’ve seen too many defeats to Oldco in League Cup Finals to be complacent.  Celtic’s major trophy haul currently equals that of the various Rangerses (Old, New; even Berwick and Cove).

We are going to overtake their figure soon, but it would be appropriate to have them there to bear witness to the historic event.

  1. I see Leipzig have gone out a wee bit in the betting.

They are still hot (ish ) favourites but I feel there is a growing belief that we can get something from the game.

  2. Hot Smoked.

The do have a good few injuries to first team guys,I know they will have good replacements, just not as good.Simmons, something like that, was very doubtful, got a bad ankle injury,if he is out, that weakens them.Top team.If we play with the same pace it should be a cracker.Hopefully they play a high back line like Aberdeen.

  3. Those tops are whats known as”Scruffy Chic”.

    So I have been told.If that’s true,I’m getting one.Right trendy guy me.Oh aye.

My liking for the flares was very qualified.

There is little doubt that flares can be spectacular but it is indeed illegal , dangerous and when you basically light them all over the entire end then it is completely unacceptable.

It is one thing for those who indulge to keep them within a largely compliant group, but when you introduce them all over with no regard for fellow fans health or safety then there is no excuse or sympathy.

I do however think that the Norwegian ” safe pyro ” model has some merit and should be explored.

Surely less dangerous forms of spectacular attention seeking atmosphere lighting can be found. LED for example.

Possibly the GB et al should take a trip to Glasglo, the lighting was spectacular and safe. Could similar be replicated at football games.

Finally and it is pertinent. Scotland and the UK in general has one of the highest stastictics regarding asthma, especially children. It is incumbant of the clubs and authorities to provide a safe arena.

If they do not there will be consequences.

I hope that clarifies my position and removes any ambiguity.

    Cheers and HH.

  5. Watched Dortmund beat Leipzig 2-1 at the weekend. Leipzig led 1-0. Their huge striker Sesko (No. 30) scored after absolutely blasting a shot into the roof of the net from about 7 yards. He leathered another one just over the bar from about 25 yards. He can’t be given any space or time on the ball. They also had a left winger (No. 11) who is built like a tank and very difficult to get off the ball. Those two stood out the most. Our old friend Kevin Kampl who must have played against us is aging but still around. He came on late in the game and sent a wonderful cross into the box which eluded the Dortmund defence but no one could get a touch on to equalise. They are a well organised high pressing team who are very physical.

I’ll accept a draw right now but as usual I’ll hope for a win.

Very clear and well put – I now can agree with you on almost all. Do you feel as I do that things will have to come to a some sort of a head for things to change?

At the moment I don’t see any desire of those using pyros to heed any warning. The pyromaniacs and those who support them think everyone else is a killjoy – how long before they kill and/or badly maim?

By the way it looked to me that there had been prior access to set up the pyros, much as they do with a tifo – if so, who permitted this – was it Celtic, or, SFA Hampden?

    Cheers for coming back HH.

Your name has never been banned from posting for more than a couple of days at most but never had your name permanently banned which is dubiously suspicious in itself?

    The reason?

    A. You are a fantastic poster who has no agendas against other posters who see things that you don’t see, or rather you choose not to see, so you are simply even handed with everybody’s opinions no matter how opposite those opinions are to your own which is truly admirable?

    B. You are a Tout for the Mod and forever sneakily begging the Mod to ban whoever disagrees with you and shows your “suck the swamp no matter what” approach as seriously questionable and devoid of any rationale?

So? What is it to be?

  20. On top of all the other warnings, a flares display like Saturday that results in the game to be delayed by 10-15 minutes would see us being hammered. But carry on guys, the rules don’t apply to you.

  22. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Really dismayed the build up to such a big game in the Champions League is being taken over by a SMSM induced narrative about pyros.

Given the obvious repetitional damage it does to the club, not to mention the risk of injury or disfigurement to those around them, I often wondered why they do it?

I’ve long since given up trying to fathom it and have adopted Occam’s razor – they simply don’t care, which invites the question, are they genuine Celtic supporters or do they use Celtic as a platform to draw attention to their politics?

  23. Aside from Dortmund the only team who has troubled Leipzig domestically were St Pauli.

They drew 0-0 at Millentror back in September.

St Pauli had just 31% possession but got 41-14 touches in Leipzig box and many more corners, shots and opportunities to score.

They were really unlucky not to win. We are better than St Pauli. We can do this with the right game plan.

  24. GM

They don’t know what they are. Every team has them though. Ours have some good causes they attach to but they will never be told what to do.

Ours see themselves as anarchists and don’t really care about the club or UEFA. Confidently expecting a ban and I really hope I am wrong.

It is a pity as during the quieter games it adds loads to the atmosphere.

Sadly the old spontaneity we used to get which was so special on big nights is less prevalent because of them.
