History can pivot even for bench duties

296

Scott Bain leaves Celtic as one of the most decorated players in Scottish football history.  Since signing in January 2018 the goalkeeper has collected 14 winners’ medals, including seven league titles.  The trophies arrived at a rate of one every 5.6 first team starts, which is probably a record!

He was the player Brendan Rodgers never intended to sign.  Brendan was set to bring in Trevor Carson from Motherwell that January on a four year deal, but Motherwell’s backfill (a loaner from Newcastle) went to Aberdeen instead, so ‘Well were unable to agree the deal.

Scott was brought in on a six-month loan.  In an interview last year, Carson revealed that Brendan spoke to him after the deal fell through and told him Celtic would be back in for him in summer.  When transfer business got underway the following June, Motherwell wanted £1m for a player who would make a total of 65 league and cup appearances for them over an indifferent four year stay.

That’s fewer than Scott made for Celtic in seven years.  Celtic declined. Carson’s subsequent career suggests he was not worth that valuation.  We signed Bain on a free to pick up bench duties instead.

History is fascinating because there is so much omitted.  The Trevor Carson/Scott Bain goings-on is a case in point.  History pivoted, but without a footnote.

  1. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

I’ll pass on the sour grapes routine about the takeover over by.

    It’s happened. ( I was skeptical )

The facts will come out in the wash.

    Starting with this …

“Cavenagh has been installed as board chairman with Paraag Marathe serving the board as vice chairman.

Mark Taber, Andrew Clayton and Gene Schneur also join as new members of the board and join existing members Patrick Stewart, Fraser Thornton, John Halsted, and George Taylor.

Graeme Park, Julian Wolhardt and Alastair Johnston are all stepping down from their positions.”

    5-4 to the new guys

(plus they hold chair and vice chair)

3 guys out who likely didn’t take much in the way of salary.

5 guys in who almost certainly will.

So, the leadership team just got more expensive.

In unrelated news, when Malcolm Glazer took over Manchester United – by strange coincidence – three guys called Joel Glazer, Bryan Glazer, and Avram Glazer were appointed to highly paid executive roles at the club.

I’m sure Man Utd reaped the benefit of their expertise.

The penniless arcade – £20M sounds about the size of the deal most financial experts thought it was. Celtic are totalling that for wee Jeremie.

  3. The Irish media are fulled to the brim with fake liars just like UK, Scottish, EU, USA, etc, etc.

    Racism? Where?

    Troll? Where?

    Kevin? Where?

Why don`t yeez grow up and get ready for SPL Title fight of your lives versus mighty Livingston FC?

    Who’ll win?

The Manager who does not do learning lessons ie: Precious Brendan Rodgers?

Or – wee rough & tumble Davie Martindale?

Who on Livi’s last spell in the SPL, he stopped keeping it tight at the back and playing the long ball on the break and as a result, Livi were relegated.

But they relearned their old tried and trusted methods and shot straight back up the lower league and now they are back with their big giant bus to sit in front of their goals, and a big new bag of banana skins for those idealist types of managers who are incapable of learning from their mistakes.

IF, and it is a big if, the huns bring in wee sneaky Naisy to play the Livi way, like he did to us as Hearts manager at Parkhead, leading to the best fans in the world booooing Brendan’s Lions off of the pitch at half time, and full time.

Even Santa Clause who came all of the way from Toyland to do the halftime Windfall draw, and he too was mercilessly booooed from the pitch as well because wee sneaky Naisy put 60,000 noses out of joint by saying to his team in the away Parkhead dressing room,

“Today Lads we’re going to be Livi, so stick it round these Dimmy’s!”

    Then interesting times lie ahead.

  4. I wonder how much was paid for the 51% as their share aren’t listed, will the sale of the shares and cost be published on the Companies House website?

£20 million to be raised from a share issue, who will buy these what is the price and is the issue underwritten?

  5. Rangers today released 13 youth players in a clearout. Loan players will be returned and those out of contract will not be resigned. These are the first signs of austerity from the new owners. there will be no investment by the new owners, instead there will be another share issue to raise £20 million. Remember, these shares are practically worthless, so I expect the deluded will have to cough up at least 49% so the US investors can maintain their majority share

I expect there will be an arrival of free agents throughout the summer on short term contracts and loans with parent club paying most of wages

It shouldn’t be long until the huns will turn on the new owners.

  6. We welcome the chase. Don’t we ?

For the second day was up at Parkhead with friends renewing season tickets.

Parkhead looks magnificent, and something to be proud of.

I even saw a lesser spotted cyclist using a cycle lane. Wow.

Unfortunately the ticket office shut at 14.00 hrs.

Unless things have changed from this morning.

Apart from that, such potential at our magnificent surroundings. We really need to optimise that.

Another positive we have and Greyskull does not.

Sevco leaning guys spent million upon millions every year over and above income to keep the lights on and got chased out. They clearly made a decision they no longer wanted to put more money in so went about reducing the wage bill the season before last and last season again. The new guys will likely spend some money, but there is no chance they push the wage bill back up and put themselves in the same situation as the previous board.

The new guys may add more sound business judgement than the previous incumbents but that will meant living within their means and no more crazy spending, we shall see. More likely they will try to replicate what celtic are doing. Its not only celtic though, Aberdeen have been doing it to a lesser degree and hearts will no doubt be doing it after investment from bloom.

Celtic need to look after own business and invests accordingly. Celtic work to a plan on and off the pitch and that plan is effective because stability is provided.

  11. celtic exchange reported last week that frimpong sell on to celtic was set at 30 percent of profit made .

    we sold him for 11m.

    they sold him for 29m.

    30 percent of 18 is 4.8m.

no surprise reports are trying to portray a negative story

    where there is none .

  12. Jeremy Frimpong has signed for Liverpool for £29.5million according to BBC sport, how much does Celtic stand to receive?

Daily record story, i smell s%^T. It was widely reported celtic had 30% on profit over 11 million regards frimpong’s sell on. Why would celtic agreed to a deal that limits their potential future profit, it makes no sense at all!!!

Unless your a hurting sevco loving ragtag followers

  16. In more concerned about Celtic and our recruitment team getting it right. We need pace and power right through the team. Athletes! We also need some guile and creativity up front.

The biggest threat to Celtic, is Celtic!
