History can pivot even for bench duties

296

Scott Bain leaves Celtic as one of the most decorated players in Scottish football history.  Since signing in January 2018 the goalkeeper has collected 14 winners’ medals, including seven league titles.  The trophies arrived at a rate of one every 5.6 first team starts, which is probably a record!

He was the player Brendan Rodgers never intended to sign.  Brendan was set to bring in Trevor Carson from Motherwell that January on a four year deal, but Motherwell’s backfill (a loaner from Newcastle) went to Aberdeen instead, so ‘Well were unable to agree the deal.

Scott was brought in on a six-month loan.  In an interview last year, Carson revealed that Brendan spoke to him after the deal fell through and told him Celtic would be back in for him in summer.  When transfer business got underway the following June, Motherwell wanted £1m for a player who would make a total of 65 league and cup appearances for them over an indifferent four year stay.

That’s fewer than Scott made for Celtic in seven years.  Celtic declined. Carson’s subsequent career suggests he was not worth that valuation.  We signed Bain on a free to pick up bench duties instead.

History is fascinating because there is so much omitted.  The Trevor Carson/Scott Bain goings-on is a case in point.  History pivoted, but without a footnote.

    ERATIC

More concerning for me is that the third member of the trio didn’t even merit a game as a substitute.

I don’t see him coping with the plastic and tactics at Livingston unless he suddenly toughens up over the next month.

I reckon they’ll be looking at a return when they look to sell it in 5 years or so. Turn them into a company that makes a bit of money by making the cl and making a serious go at profiting from player trading.

At Leeds they bought in, had a long look at whether it was worth buying it outright then gradually bought up more shares until they bought out the owner. Now they’ve got 100% and the club owns elland road again they are committing a lot of their own money into developing the ground and turning themselves into a premier league club again.

Idah, Engels and Trusty didn’t have a preseason with Celtic.

I firmly believe all three will be much better players for the experience.

    Adam mainly for his fitness.

Arne mainly for refining his tactical understanding (and he’s only a kid).

Auston for conditioning and fully understanding what it takes.

Matt O’Riley was promising but inconsistent for a season.

    It can take that long.

Older posters will recall Liverpool in the late 70s, early 80s buying talented players with loads of potential … who never got a sniff of the first team for a year.

Adam: Think we paid too much and bought him mainly because he scored the winning goal in the cup final.

Arne: As you say still young but don’t actually know if he’s any better than McGowan at the moment.

Trusty: Is he any better than Stephen Welsh ?

Out of the three I think Engles has the best chance of making the grade ……

As I say , hope they all kick on next year, risky business buying young players 🥴

  8. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

There no “hope” about it, it’s imperative they kick on big time next season.

  9. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Erratic- cheers.

I too think we paid too much for Adam but we paid less than expected for Bernardo and got Kuhn on the cheap.

Once in a while we’ll overpay to get a player.

If it is just once in a while, I can live with that.

If Adam gets properly fit and focused I think he’ll be a 30 goal striker next season. If so, his fee won’t rate a mention.

As for Arne, I think he looks a terrific player already. For me two things are holding him back until now.

    1. His vision is world class. He sees space, lanes and passing lines way before others – moves don’t come off and he looks bad.

    2. And this applies to all our midfielders except Reo. He defers to the boss (Calum) too much. Everything is dictated by Calum. Bernardo feeling it too.

No issue with that at this time but we need to be careful not to fall into the Broonie trap with Calum as he ages.

Brownie got slower and deeper with time but remained the instinctive fulcrum. The huge asset gradually became a liability.

McCowan? – I’ve seen enough to be convinced there is a footballer there. I’ve not seen enough to be convinced there is an athlete.

Aye, fair point Clunks, it could just be working capital to keep the lights on whilst they put some sort of business in place.

Here’s the deal though and something I’ve been saying for a while – the “consortium” doesn’t understand who/what they’re dealing with. With the help of the SMSM they’ll be expecting a treble next year. If Celtic continue to dominate, the Americans will be run out of town.

  16. During lockdown it was feared that the habit of ewes showing the lambs which upland fields to go, which then became engrained for the life of the lambs, would be wiped out.

I fear the same thing will happen with our fans with the new ticket regulations.

I’m not talking about season ticket holders, I’m talking about the myriad buses who run on ‘shared’ season tickets and put a bus together on block booked seats.
