History can pivot even for bench duties

Scott Bain leaves Celtic as one of the most decorated players in Scottish football history.  Since signing in January 2018 the goalkeeper has collected 14 winners’ medals, including seven league titles.  The trophies arrived at a rate of one every 5.6 first team starts, which is probably a record!

He was the player Brendan Rodgers never intended to sign.  Brendan was set to bring in Trevor Carson from Motherwell that January on a four year deal, but Motherwell’s backfill (a loaner from Newcastle) went to Aberdeen instead, so ‘Well were unable to agree the deal.

Scott was brought in on a six-month loan.  In an interview last year, Carson revealed that Brendan spoke to him after the deal fell through and told him Celtic would be back in for him in summer.  When transfer business got underway the following June, Motherwell wanted £1m for a player who would make a total of 65 league and cup appearances for them over an indifferent four year stay.

That’s fewer than Scott made for Celtic in seven years.  Celtic declined. Carson’s subsequent career suggests he was not worth that valuation.  We signed Bain on a free to pick up bench duties instead.

History is fascinating because there is so much omitted.  The Trevor Carson/Scott Bain goings-on is a case in point.  History pivoted, but without a footnote.

I feel bad for taking anything away from PSG, but Inter are so unbelievably bad and passive I have to wonder if the Mafia are involved in this game.

Engels, Adam and trusty were in their 1st season at celtic and scotland and finished the season with a double. They seem to be getting a hard time compared to others but they contributed towards those wins as much as any other player in the squad.

  8. Seems quite a few bhoys are a bit worried by the American take over . I would imagine that the financial heavyweight that Dermt Desmond is would know how this take over works , and how to act on it . We should know what needs to be done to stay ahead of the pack , still can’t understand any company investing in that putrid club .

Folk worrying about the takeover across the city is as stupid as the sevco supporters buying into it blindly despite their past issues. Best case senerio is they are run better as a business. That likely means the end of monthly hand outs from sevco supporting co-owners. Players will likely be sold at peak value as they try to live within their means, whilst trying to compete with us. There is no quick solution or way round that particularly with the new FSR in play.

Celtic have been operating a player trading model for over a decade and have good knowledge about balancing selling and winning. Just last week another £5.5 million was secured via sell-ons. If it was as easy as supporters and media cheerleaders thought every club would be doing it. To operate said model clubs need to be financially secure ans stable, not loss running machines.

Celtic have made significant capital investment at lennoxtown and barrowfield that will ensure the footballing departments physical environment is up to scratch for years and years to come. The academy generally produces several young players that move on to other clubs every year for developmenral fees and more, which helps fund itself. The next step is adding more youth players into the first team, but only were they are good enough.

Celtic have an inbuilt advantage over our nearest challengers with 10k more seats as well as multiple more corporate seats in the stadium. The sport sciences department are being transferred to the new development at barrowfield which opens up more scope for income during match days. We have excellent commercial deals compared to our nearest challengers.

We have a manager and squad of winners with significant value. Before a ball is kicked in anger next season that squad will have added KT (for free) which means that squad will be in better shape now than it was last season. Even if we have to sell, we will add again.

As well as all the advantages outlined above, celtic still have scope to grow commercially. The much talked about hotel, museum, restuarant, bar, cafe, superstore, ticket office etc in the celtic triangle does not need to be a pipedream. Celtic have the space for that work and more importantly, the means to make it happen without breaking the bank.

Simply put celtic’s future successes or failures will be determined by celtic.
