History can pivot even for bench duties

296

Scott Bain leaves Celtic as one of the most decorated players in Scottish football history.  Since signing in January 2018 the goalkeeper has collected 14 winners’ medals, including seven league titles.  The trophies arrived at a rate of one every 5.6 first team starts, which is probably a record!

He was the player Brendan Rodgers never intended to sign.  Brendan was set to bring in Trevor Carson from Motherwell that January on a four year deal, but Motherwell’s backfill (a loaner from Newcastle) went to Aberdeen instead, so ‘Well were unable to agree the deal.

Scott was brought in on a six-month loan.  In an interview last year, Carson revealed that Brendan spoke to him after the deal fell through and told him Celtic would be back in for him in summer.  When transfer business got underway the following June, Motherwell wanted £1m for a player who would make a total of 65 league and cup appearances for them over an indifferent four year stay.

That’s fewer than Scott made for Celtic in seven years.  Celtic declined. Carson’s subsequent career suggests he was not worth that valuation.  We signed Bain on a free to pick up bench duties instead.

History is fascinating because there is so much omitted.  The Trevor Carson/Scott Bain goings-on is a case in point.  History pivoted, but without a footnote.

Dinnies still there, 10 minutes drive. Leo’s and Roddy’s the only pubs left in the village. Quite sad really.

No football until the 8th of July, away to Cork. First time we’re at home is to Newcastle on the 19th July. Uhh! Have we bought anyone yet? And no, making a loan player permanent doesn’t count.

  8. Thought it might be interesting to watch the highlights of the CL final on MOTD, main reason being that during the season the BBC had employed both Clarence Seedorf and Wayne Rooney as touchline analysts, experts both. Neither were to be seen, and even worse, the co-commentator on the game was Danny Murphy, someone who brings all the nuance and enthusiasm of an undertaker to a party. Not to mention the personality of a cardboard box. How this guy gets any work in broadcasting is beyond me, then again can you imagine him giving a team talk in the dressing room before a match…doesn’t bear thinking about…

If you want to hire a Danny, get Danny Dyer in there….he really is the business

2 people unfortunately killed, hundreds injured, almost 600 arrested, dozens of policemen injured all during the celebrations for PSG winning the Champions League. The open top bus parade is still going ahead in Paris today.

Wait until GCC and the Daily Record hear about this!

  11. There’s something weird about the transfer window this season. It opens for about 8 days (1-8 June?) and then closes for about a week and then reopens circa 16 June until 1 September. Read about it on a Dpurs website. Does anyone know if it’s true?

Think Sinisalo should be our No 1 next year… Don’t think we will renew Kaspers loan deal ?

I totally agree. Kasper didn’t cover himself in glory during the 2-3 defeat to Sevco and God alone knows what he was trying to do in the Cup Final punching a ball that was on the ground instead of catching it. I’ve been impressed by Sinisalo since he took over in goal and felt it was the wrong thing to do to drop him for the Cup Final. Having said that Kasper did have a good season but I note that he was recently slaughtered in the Danish media for being past it.

Thanks for the explanation though it seems daft to me to have it open so that teams playing in the tournament can sign players to play in the tournament but close it when the tournament begins. What about all the other clubs throughout Europe who want to do business while the tournament is in progress?

  17. Interesting to see the new rangers owners not waiting to sack their recruitment head and bring in a preferred option.

Not waiting for their new manager to pick a broader recruitment team. Not picking ‘yes men’ but picking folks for the job.

    Sinisalo is the future

I thought he was desperately unlucky not to have retained his place. He did not deserve to be dropped.

He was flung in at the deep end with virtually no first team appearances and aquited himself very well.

Looking from the outside, Brendan and his team got that one wrong

Maybe we should just give up – they’re obviously better in every department- of course we never recruited yes men, how’s Peter’s lad doing since he left.

I’ll judge the recruitment team after the window closes, not before its open

The last time we employed a non yes man ,in a senior position .

He had to resign due to not being allowed to run things ,with the autonomy that he was promised ,when he accepted the role.

  25. We have a circa £50 m difference in income ,in our favour ,over the Huns ,last season .

That can be turned around in one season ,if they qualify for the CL and we don’t.

The Americans need to ensure that the Huns qualify for the CL within a couple of seasons .

Even better for them if we fail to do so.

    That being said .

They have to get their player recruitment right .

    They have invested £95m .

They are not here to play second fiddle.

Ross Doohan signing from Aberdeen makes sense, with Scott Bain released. Sinasalo likely to play more games next season. Kasper trusted for the qualifier and hopefully the Champions League. Greg Taylor almost certain to leave, and Jeff Schlupp might be offered terms now that he’s a Bosman this month, though we’re still after Keita Kosugi the Japanese left back. Mathias Kvistgaarden scored 23 goals this season and is still on the radar.

Palma, Tilio, Welsh, Kwon and Lagerbielke are all due back at the club though that may a technicality for more than one or two.
