History goes on the line, our Celtic lives

278

There is a theory that overwhelmingly dominant teams devalue competition as others invariably play for the runners’ up spot.  It is not true.  The double treble winners have given the League Cup a value sponsor’s Ladbrokes could scarcely have hoped for.  Being the next trophy Celtic can win or lose, Scotland’s second cup competition is more valuable than at any time I remember.

When Celtic are eventually eliminated from a cup competition, there will be celebrations across the land, as the rest realise one of them will win a trophy.  The only experience Celtic fans have like this in living memory is the Scottish Cup wins in 1995 and 1965, the importance of which are still discussed and cherished.

The heightened importance of the League Cup is not limited to fans of other teams, it is more important to Celtic fans than at any time since the 1997 final.  For so long, winning trebles seemed impossible, even to dominant Celtic teams, but now we’ve done it twice, we want to do it again.  We want this League Cup.

Being six points adrift from Hearts in the league is far from satisfactory, but tomorrow’s League Cup game at St Johnstone is more important than Saturday’s league game at home to Aberdeen.  We need to be ready for it.

On Sunday, two groups of Celtic fans will run through the city for the Great Scottish Run, wearing green Celtic FC Foundation tshirts.  The blisters and cramp that got us there will be a distant memory.

There is nothing quite like running through the packed streets of Glasgow with that big logo on your chest, it engages people like nothing else.  It is an opportunity to represent something bigger than any of us.

The work of the Foundation is invaluable to some of the most deprived and needy in Scotland, Ireland, England and throughout the world.  It is an important part of our Celtic lives.  If you can donate to support the work, please do so here.

Thank you.

That doesn’t quite rebut the suggestion that he has told The Great Desmondo that he’s for the off when circumstances allow.

And is the sort of thing you would expect him to be required (in terms of his contract) to tweet if there is any truth in the suggestion.

    Just sayin’.

  2. To me watching Celtic right now they seem to have completely lost their appetite, the Hunger has gone AWOL for the first time in 2 seasons. To compound the problem all the teams we are playing right now have definitely got the Hunger, they are all desperate to beat us.

An Invincible season followed by a Back to Back Treble season followed by …….. I don’t think the players we have right now believe they can follow that. Its up to Brendan to get them back on track and if nothing else to convince them to give it their best shot, which is something else that’s gone missing recently (maximum effort).

Ah well, it was great while it lasted.

  3. Triple Rebel Treble is dandy.

    But the TEN is everything.

TEN in a row crushes a generation or two of supremast Huns raised on cheating, hate and institutionalised oppression.

I’ve seen their boards. I’ve seen their fear.

The trebles are a free shot. The TEN is a once in a lifetime chance to vanquish their decades of maleficence.

  4. Kev J,

NFL would be back at celtic like a shot.

NFL has backed the huns being back –

If we emptied the stands, sacked the board, tell us how you see the football landscape for the years after.

    Who would benefit ?

    Who would be punished ?

    Would Celtic get back ?

How long would this this take ?

    Would Scottish football change ?

They frigged the leagues for teams like Aberdeen in the past. Did you complain then ?

    ‘Ten is everything’

Board don’t see it that way it seems. We should be going all in but as usual penny pinching. Mixed with complacency and arrogance, it will prove fatal. It seems that shareholder value takes priority over the supporters wishes. Follow the money. I just hope we can limp through this one and get 8, then make the changes that are needed. I’m not hopeful on either front, especially as the CEO has a loyalty bonus to collect in 2020, he’s not going anywhere or likely to throw money behind the Manager. The Huns will strengthen in January and have the weight of the authorities and the SMSM behind them. We are sitting ducks at this rate.

  6. John McGlynn has quit his role as a scout at Celtic and has agreed to join Raith Rovers as their new manager.

  7. So in the world of anti-matter and parallel but opposite dimensions would the anti-existence of anti-Henrik Larsson be called “The Maleficent 7”?

  8. For a minute or two earlier as I worked (as opposed to posting nonsense) at my desk and computer, I had a bit of a disturbing experience and reminder of mortality…..as always posterity will have my thoughts on this event….

At first the tints and colours faded, the greens and blues began to blend,

Yellows tinged and mixed wae orange, focus lost, was this the end?

The letters melted ran like treacle, punctuation disappeared,

I peered, I squinted, made no difference, I slumped as Armageddon neared.

No more I’d type upon a white screen, the world’s rainbow turned to grey,

No more to simmer thoughts to stories, the keyboard could be put away,

Spectacles I’d need no longer, no more their hiding place I’d seek

Resigned to fate’s unyielding sentence, le fin de Comédie Tragique

Accepting of times’ poisoned arrow, a last sip from my tea I took

And placed it back upon its beer mat, no more biscuits would I dook

BUT THEN OCCURRED A BLESSED MIRACLE, hope restored and vanquished fear,

‘Twas steam from tea that dimmed my vision, …..my glasses now were once more clear!

Panic over and a good reason for sticking to booze when at the desktop!!

    Hail Hail

  9. I have a good feeling about lewis Morgan – I think he has the pace , guile and prowess to fill the Armstrong gap. Hoping he gets game time.

anyone else see the stonewaller we were denied – Thompson was standing right beside the players as the corner was swung in. the killie defender, back to the ball, wrestled the celt to the ground. these decision going against us and for the hun make massive difference throughout the season. I hear hearts pen was really soft.

make no mistake – the mibbery will do everything to help them and hinder us , particularly over the next few weeks.

  10. Fat boy BOYD was the master of the “fear factor” having never scored against the hoops…….probably get a call up any day soon from ebt Mc gleish

Stuart Armstrong has been a huge miss in our team. He was my favourite Celtic player when fit. His driving runs into opposition territory has not been replaced. Hopefully two footed Lewis Morgan becomes his effective replacement. Stuart Armstrong, Victor Wanyama and Fraser Forster all seem to be non starters for their respective teams. Would take all 3 back on loan in January.

    ——-

Totally agree. The off-the-ball runs from deeper positions are much harder to pick up. All of our good teams have had that type of player – McClair, Stark, O’Donnell, Burley, Petrov, Ledley.

Haven’t seen enough of Morgan to know if this is in his game. Wondered if Christie might be able to do it. Not sure. Certainly needs to be addressed.

  13. As someone who lives in the North of Ireland, and know Neil Lennon’s family, could I just clarify one thing about Neil. Neil was never a Celtic supporter (fine), and was quite happy as a youth to go on a soccer trial at Rangers (which is also fine), and was happy to play for NI (which was his choice), so could Kev just cut the claptrap about the Rebel NL.

  14. Just listened to BR’s interview.

Yes there is work to do, the dressing room is United and he is going nowhere when there is unfinished business .

It looks like China’s loss is our gain.Great news. The challenge starts now.

“For the record, I didn’t read the lines quoted by BMCUW as triumphalism intended to wind up huns. I read it simply as triumphalist crowing and reflecting a wider malaise of complacency that seems now to have permeated into the squad and into the field.”

I am reluctant to prolong the debate on the topic as we have a chance to change the mood every few days on here. Another loss and the angst increases. Another win and some might think a corner has been turned. Most of us know, however that there are many twists and turns ahead.

However, triumphalist crowing it may be, and we can agree on that. Wind up or deadly serious complacency depends on whether you can believe that a serious rational man would proclaim that we will win the league for ever and ever and expect to be taken seriously.

I know where I stand on that aspect of language decoding.

See the lead article on August 3rd.I can’t believe that you are trying to debate its existence,or its intent.

I did not debate its existence. I did debate its intent- see my reply to JG above.

Come on,T. You’re a decent guy, problems exist big time and you are holding people to Supreme Court standards of proof-and even that isn’t good enough,it seems. I quoted the article,ffs!-and hiding behind pedantry.

It’s not about proof- you furnished the words and I accepted them as they were stated. However, as with “our treble”, there really is room for alternative meaning. Unless you are claiming that you (but not I) know better and more clearly what Paul 67 intended to mean than the man himself, then it may be semantics but its not pedantry or standard of proof that is at play. I have always defended my right to define the meaning in my own words. I expect that right to be extended to all others on here- for you as well as Paul 67. None of us would be happy in surrendering the right to be interpreted by others. There is nothing more annoyng than someone trying to butt in and say ” What SFTB or BMCUW or Paul67 is trying to say IS…….” (cue someone doing just that before 8 pm!)

People aren’t coming on here criticising the state of the club because they feel like it,it’s because they are genuinely concerned. And they are,in my opinion, quite right so to be.

At last, agreement. I conceded that point freely in my reply. This is not about people’s right to be concerned. How could it be? I am concerned so why would I decry concern in others?

For me, my point was that the charge of complacency, hubris and delusional triumphalism was, at least, Not Proven, and, most likely, unless Paul confirms otherwise, Not Guilty.

I would like to get that element of doubt in people’s mind before they condemn. Otherwise we will have a lot of self righteous fans rushing over to tell the Green Brigade to STFU about all that 10iar malarkey. That’s a bit more of a daunting prospect than tackling a benignly over-liberal blog host. :-)

  17. at the end of the day bhoys and ghirls, our team is hard to watch at the moment, there is no excitement anymore like maybe paddy or jimmy racing down the wing firing balls into the box, it seems to be across the park football and tippy tappy back to craig Gordon.sorry I think its boring fitba.hh.

  18. GTTF

Every player you mentioned was a favourite of mine. Would have loved to have seen Knightswood Bhoy Billy Stark spend his full career in the hoops. Like Jock Stein and Danny McGrain, he was not born a Celtic supporter, but will die one.

High Hopes for Lewis Morgan, who is in the same position now, as Jock, Danny and Billy were.

  21. We are history makers. Two trebles will never be achieved again. Let’s now prioritise.

I couldn’t disagree more with Paul 67’s opinion that tomorrow’s LC game is more important than beating Aberdeen on Saturday.

To a certain extent we are victim’s of our own success. We cannot sustain competing for every domestic competition with the same group of players. The domestic cups, especially the LC should now be a tournament for trying plan B, C , D and E. Maybe we can find a formula and win in style.

Imo , the league is paramount and the Europa should be the next priority.

Can the supporters handle cup setbacks for the greater good. ?

    HH.

  22. I see the sheep are leaving 3 up when Hibs are attacking

Bet they don’t do that on Saturday.

Teams definitely know that if they get every man behind the ball against us we are fecked and out of ideas. We need to change our system

    In Brendan we trust
