History in a game

674

I know we met them in a European Cup semi-final in 1972, but the forthcoming tie against Inter Milan is all about the wonderful heritage we were gifted in 1967.  La Grande Inter, as Internazionale, then the greatest team Italy had known, had won two of the previous three European Cups and were controversially denied in the semi-final of the other.  They won three of the previous four Italian titles, denied the fourth on a play-off, and topped the table with two weeks of the Italian season to go.

They were an awesome team with gifted strikers but it was the defence which marked them out; this was a team who didn’t concede goals, when they took the lead, they kept it.

Simpson, Craig, Gemmell; Murdoch, McNeill and Clark; Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Auld and Lennox, and Jock Stein, not only killed La Grande Inter, but did so, so comprehensively, they forced Inter, and the rest of the Italian game, to change their ways.  Catenaccio, the suffocating, ultra-defensive system, was finished.

For Europe, the consequences were profound.  Celtic, with their wave after wave of attack; 45 attempts on goal in a European final; were celebrated everywhere.  The drift towards caution stopped, teams realised the very best defensive sides could be beaten into submission by sheer talent.  In the two subsequent decades the dominant Latin countries of Italy, Spain and Portugal, who had won all previous European Cups, would win the trophy only once.

Football fans across the globe, not just Celtic fans, will want to be there when the teams meet in a game which represents History, not just our history, Europe’s History.

We’ll talk later today on moves being put on the SFA at the moment.  ‘Here we go again…….’

Evening bhoys and ghirls. Regarding the Tonev case I believe that Celtic, Alecks and the Bulgarian FA will and should pursue this through CAS and clear his name. As others have said only 2 people know what was said. Now I know that what I am saying is has no direct baring on this but in the last 15 years I have worked in a professional level with several Eastern Europeans some from Bulgaria, Roumania, Moldova and Ukraine. Now in the sport of freestyle wrestling it is quite normal that when sparring that someone injures another person what I always noticed and certainly asked why, was that the Eastern Europeans always when injured or angry cursed in their native language. I would ask what they said and be told they were swearing or throwing out an insult. It struck me that it was easier for them to use their native language. In 15 years of dealing with these athletes and travelling the world to competition and training camps I always found this to be the case. I have also never heard any of them use the word c**t I always found that this was a british term. This is why I find this all a bit suspect. I believe that if Tonev was going to abuse Long he would have done so in his native language it would have been more natural. How long has Tonev be in britain 1 maybe 2 years, some of the wrestlers I worked with and coaches had been in this country 15 years and still to this day will curse in their native tongue it is more natural. This is only my opinion.

Take it all the way Celtic.

  10. The Battered Bunnet on

There’s plenty of evidence. The issue at heart is whether, in sum, it would lead a reasonable person to come to the same conclusion as the original Tribunal.

Much of the commentary on here and elsewhere isn’t really concerned with the details of the case, but it essentially, a reaction to the outcome.

It’s a very difficult situation, one that is repeated in a thousand and one employment disciplinary procedures every day of the week.

For those involved, it’s quite horrid. For the rest of us, we get only a glimpse of the detail and hereafter try to figure out the rationale behind the decision.

For some folk, it’s a longstanding SFA conspiracy to undermine the club.

For others, well, “clearly” Logan has some character failing or another that explains his behaviour in the sorry tale.

Others again will have labelled Tonev as racist the minute the complaint was made, while yet others will attempt to divine some motivation or the absence of some motivation to explain what happened.

We might attribute a misunderstanding on Logan’s part to Tonev’s non-native English language.

Or suggest that Tonev’s representatives were incompetent I presenting his case.

We might (quite properly) point out that it’s one man’s word against the other, and indeed, that both men could be equally correct in their assertions – Logan believes Tonev used racist language: Tonev believes he didn’t. The beliefs of both men are not mutually exclusive after all: There is room to believe both men at the same time, while accepting that one is wrong.

I believe that Logan believes he was racially abused for example. I also believe that Tonev’s explanation of why Logan believes this to be the case is unconvincing. That’s belief for you.

All this, and myriad other attempts to figure it out within the context of our own experiences, understanding and prejudices, have been played out this evening.

The case was heard. Tonev was represented by two of the top guys in the business. Having heard all of the testimony and reviewed all of the related evidence, it was the opinion of Tribunal that Tonev probably used the language complained of.

    Probably.

A second group of qualified and disinterested people reviewed the original findings, and having heard further presentations, came to the view that the original Tribunal was justified in coming to its decision.

We can argue the finer points of law at hand as well as we’re qualified to, but we ought to recognise that those who listened to the evidence, and those who thereafter scrutinised their decision, were of the view that it probably occurred in the manner described by Logan.

    Probably.

In the same way, Nigella Lawson probably authorised the hired help to use her credit card, Tommy Sheridan probably utilised an elastic definition of ‘the whole truth’, and Santa Claus probably doesn’t really exist.

    Probably.

On balance, and in all of the circumstances, the Tribunal found that it’s probable that Tonev used the language complained of. Tonev’s explanation was found to be improbable. An Appeal body found they were justified in coming to this decision.

    There’s no conspiracy.

    There’s no misdirection.

    There’s no miscarriage of justice.

The decision is justifiable and legally sound.

    The decision is probably right.

Oh! silly me by the grace of God he wasn’t playing for Celtic at the time….

TV pictures which were ridiculed around the world and the jersey he wore saved Charlie that time, as far as Tonev is concerned it appears to me that the SFA will stoop to any level to smear Celtic and her supporters, But obviously the mountain of historical precedents and evidence state that – in the balance of probability – I could be wrong on that one.

Logan’s immediate outrage and reaction ….

    =====

Towards the end of that game, Logan was involved with Leigh Griffiths and he displayed some outrage and reaction.

In a subsequent game, his outrage and reaction earned a red card for foul and abusive etc.

None of the above, proves or disproves the nature of Tonev’s utterances but, for me, it devalues the weight placed on Logan’s outrage and reaction.

  17. Apologies for the length of post – Tonev/Logan related.

I read from the full account of the Tonev Appeal Hearing that Logan was a credible and reliable witness whereas the “Tribunal was unable to accept him (Tonev) as either credible or reliable.”

The Judicial Panel Appellate Tribunal continued..

“They (the original Disciplinary Tribunal) have explained that he (Tonev) gave his evidence in a guarded and hesitant manner and that his evidence on the understanding of the language that had been used was particularly unsatisfactory. Their impression was of a witness giving a less than full account of his actual understanding of the language used.”

So Tonev lied, according to the Tribunal which continued.

“The Disciplinary Tribunal had the opportunity to observe how he (Logan) responded to the challenge of his account by cross-examination and he had clearly stood up to that test. No reason why he may have been mistaken had been put to him. Logan’s immediate reaction to the incident and his conduct thereafter in bringing the matter to the attention of his captain, the referee, club staff and other players had been consistent and provided support for the credibility and reliability of his account.”

Since Tonev had none of his actions or reaction at the time of or immediately after the incident highlighted in support of his version, the accuser was offered more opportunity to substantiate his allegation than the accused was to defend himself.

In addition, the suggestion that Logan acted like he was genuinely offended and thus he must be telling the truth is a self serving and circular argument, particularly when no one has indicated how an innocent man such as Tonev should be seen to be acting at this time.

How is he supposed to act so that his demeanour is perceived to be consistent with his claim that he is innocent?

How is he supposed to know that his accuser’s behavior at the time will be one of the factors that the Tribunal choose to discredit him and thus label him a liar as well as a racist?

The complaint from Logan is easy to make but, according to these procedures, impossible to disprove. The Disciplinary and Appellate Tribunals both accepted that, other than Logan’s testimony, there was no real additional burden of proof required to prove the case. However, in enhancing and validating his testimony by referring to his “consistent” behavior after the incident, they do precisely that. There is no behavior code or protocol to follow, for a player such as Tonev wrongly accused of racism, so that he can point to how his actions and reaction were consistent with his account of events.

Both Tribunals have elected to ignore the absence of the reasonable corroboration that would be expected to be available in making their decision: no video footage despite numerous television cameras covering the event, no remark overheard by any official, by any player, by any fans, by any stadium staff, no still photograph showing the alleged verbal exchange. They placed great weight on the circumstantial evidence of Logan’s subsequent actions, but none at all on the lack of similar subsequent actions by Tonev.

“The Tribunal regarded his (Tonev’s) version of events as “an inherently improbable account”.”

Having set this precedent for Scottish Football, the SFA can expect to have some players exploit the Disciplinary Tribunal’s rationale to bring spurious complaints to the notice of all in sundry. All they have to do to make it stick is make the allegation and act outraged.
