History is our team talk

330

Job done, we have had a week of celebration and back slapping.  Meanwhile, in Perth, a squad are playing for their livelihoods, playing to make mortgage payments and ensure they have a wage come July.

St Johnstone may be second bottom of the league, but their last defeat was four games ago, narrowly to Newco, they have beaten Hearts, and taken draws at Pittodrie and Easter Road in the last two months.  The gap to St Mirren and safety has narrowed to six points; tomorrow we face a side with momentum.

One of football’s endearing lessons to me arrived in April 2005.  We went to Ibrox and won 1-2, the mood was similar to what it is right now, as we thought we had done the difficult work.  A home game against Tony Mowbray’s Hibs was up next.

There were all sorts of rumours of what went wrong that day, but the upshot is that a poor Hibs side left Glasgow with a 1-3 win.  Celtic lost the title by a a single point three weeks later.  No one saw that outcome after the win at Ibrox.

If you think tomorrow is all about celebrating what happened on Sunday, let me dissuade you.  If we beat St Johnstone, we will have to show even greater appetite than we know they will have.  For this one, history is our team talk.

I’ve been out this morning and not had a chance to catch up with Dermot Desmond’s subtle musings. Maybe next week.

  2. Good to hear from the moderator that a solution is belatedly at hand for Big Jimmy.

If that means I can call off my “unhelpful, posturing and infantile” personal boycott, I am glad of it. All the same, our presence on here is due, in part, to a sense of shared values and, when that disappears, we all have a decision to make.

Getting Big Jimmy back is only one of the current difficulties with CQN, but is one that was easily resolved and could have been achieved much more rapidly.

Long may the fightback against right wing and racist incursions continue. I have no desire to share space with people with those values.

Your luck might be in — might have some free time before the end of the season.

Lots to talk about — minority shareholders / Chicago school economics / Socialist Vanguard and the view from the Cumbie Tax Office / political transparency / bean counting.

  5. 04/05 — the nightmares never leave you.

The days when £70mill T/O was where we needed to be.

When you look back you could see that the whole edifice was ready to collapse.

A house divided and all that.

How we missed HL and how we missed some level of mature / sophisticated management.

And then there was the phone call / voice mail from BQ letting it all hang out.

With PL taking notes in the background.

And DD throwing his toys out the pram regarding an ungrateful support and him not wanting to invest anymore.

As the merchandising sales fell off a cliff and the bank started to get worried.

We were lucky to make it to the last day !?!

Philbhoy- I was just expressing my statement to the Mod as it was the Moderator from whom I learned of Big Jimmy’s reinstatement. I never felt or stated that it was the Mod that engineered it. I was replying to the mod because it was he that had posted. I f Paul had posted, I would have addressed the reply to him

  12. Fully expect Celtic to wipe the floor with St Johnstone tomorrow. And would not be surprised if St Mirren’s collection of thugs, bodybuilders, and journeymen, leave the pitch on Sunday afternoon undefeated.

SFTB…Surely it’s only crass if someone takes offense? Not me…there was a wow moment….then I laughed

Indeed post 04/5 we right sized and went on a 3 year dominance of domestic football over a hugely over spending rival. We also reached the last 16 in European CL twice. Arguably as successful a 3 year period in our history given the challenges faced. Winning v Hibs or Motherwell would have been the icing on the cake and given us 5 in a row.

  18. caught up on the last blog.

I dont see anything wrong with the Dermo interview. I might not like how he goes about everything, but when he breaks cover for the first time in many years why not sit up and take notice. Something is afoot if he is taking calls.

meanwhile, the fella that lives in obsurity somewhere close to celtic park but not close enough to actually attend manages to conflate the billionaires statement “i wouldnt sell my shares for three or four times their value ” as

“he will sell up for half the price and go”.

might help if he knew the difference between a majority shareholder and a principal.
