History turns on nights like that

The score-line shows a narrow win, but the substance of Celtic’s second half performance was significantly different from what we have seen so often this season, including the first half.  Lots of good chances were created – and missed – however, this was reassuring as we hoped not only for a win, but for a substantive change of fortunes.

Moreover, Brendan Rodgers will surely ponder what changes were made at halftime to bring about an effect he worked on since Sunday’s defeat, but failed to materialise at kick off.

The first half provided only more frustrating material.  Leigh Griffiths looked as ponderous as Odsonne Edouard has been recently.  Had it been Edouard who missed two great chances with the scores still level, not Leigh, the French striker would have come under yet more pressure, but even our goal-den striker was finding it tough.

Progress happens one step at a time and with 83 minutes gone, Leigh was the wrong side of the ball when James Forrest’s header was blocked, with a defender either side of him and a third opponent closer to the ball.  Leigh was the most alert man in the stadium.  He swivelled and was on the ball before anyone else knew what was happening.  His finish was none too shabby, either.

I don’t know what was said by Dedryck Boyata to referee John Beaton in the 90th minute but Brendan Rodgers summed it up well, intimating the player passed up several opportunities not to be red carded, but chose to persist with a grievance, the validity of which is moot.  The card was more for rank stupidity than anything said.

Scott Bain has not had much game time recently, so I get that he wanted to be involved in the dying seconds of added time, but his walkabout nearly sent us into extra time with 10 men.  Goalkeeping is first and foremost about decision making.  Scott made a howler.

Ask anyone and they will tell you that inconsistency in defensive selection leads to poor understanding and results.  Despite a catalogue of central defensive injuries, we have now achieved five clean sheets in six games – all with Dedryck in the team.  He’s a leader.

Coming as it did during a form slump, last night’s League Cup quarterfinal was a worry, I could sense the triple treble disappearing in the Perthshire air.  Lesser teams would have lost.  But, we are through to semi against Hearts, which will be played either at Hampden, where we are imperious, or Murrayfield, scene of our memorable 3-0 victory over Legia Warsaw.

History turns on nights like that.

  1. Given his record against Aberdeen I would expect Rogic to replace McGregor in the starting eleven for Saturday with Gordon and Hendry for Bain and Ajer. Cant see any more than 3 changes so Morgan and Mulumbu will probably start on the bench again.

  2. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

How long before we start hearing of a multi-gazillion Chinese offer for Gerrardiola. Turned down flat out of course…..

  3. Celtic should complain ..about why we never got the foul that made Boyata so angry…and why you ar allowed to kick celtic players on the ground

  4. MM,

I commented on our song book last night.

However, in the second half our Celtic songbook encouraged the team and our tempo increased.

Is this a coincidence? Upbeat Celtic songs, vibrant team performance.

    HH. Roll on Saturday. COYBIG.

PS : Great to get a win in our beachwear.

Boyata is no one’s favourite for justifiable reasons. However he needs to be defended. I can not remember ever seeing a player get a red card for dissent. It’s a ridiculous decision. The club should appeal.

Totally agree, but BR came out and backed Beaton, only they know what he said….

  6. BSR, I think that is n ow looking the most favoured option. Mid-day and 5:30/6:00 I would reckon so we will probably get the early shift to allow Aberdeen fans time to get down.

A very wet day with a coo field for the 2nd semi would be ideal for Huns V Sheep.

I am not one for trashing any of our former players and within reason their private lives are there own concern. I have nothing against Tosh McKinley, but “a real Celtic Man”

Real Celtic men don’t stick the Heid on our top scorer and legend on the eve of a crucial hun match.

*he wisnae our top scorer and “legend” at the time just a wee dread locked winger who we got cheap because of a clause in his contract, in fact prior tae signing for us he was so disenchanted with his life in Holland he was contemplating chucking it and going back tae playing for fun with his old club in Sweden.

The reason Tosh heidered him was because he and wee stinker were extracting the urine from him by not giving him the ball in training.

  8. Celtic need to appeal the red card. It’s ridiculous. Has Beaton ever shown a red for dissent in his life ? Is Boyata the only player in history to fuck off a ref ? It needs appealed and given what has already been rescinded and deemed not worthy of reds I’d be expecting Boyata to line out for the semi final.

The following is not as off topic as it appears.

Refereeing could be a game changer this season more than any of the recent past.

To change the standard of referees and remove as much possibility of bias as possible the SFA itself and the culture it encourages needs changed.

This is a very interesting article on governance in sport, courtesy of the SFSA.

As you read through it you can identify where the SFA/SPFL are failing.

    https://www.globalsportsjobs.com/article/strong-culture-and-governance-make-for-sporting-organsations/?utm_source=Global%20Sports%20Jobs&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=9883289_Inside%20Track%20-%20Newsletter%20-%20COM%20-%201270918&utm_Newsletter=Newsletter&dm_i=1G6Q,5VTZT,O916CF,N0FYC,1

The question has to be what are the SFA doing to help imbed a positive culture? The Article suggests:

    ——————————————-

To help embed a positive culture, organisations should:

DECIDE: The board should determine what culture they want to define their organisation and establish the values they wish it to espouse.

EMBODY and demonstrate: The organisation’s leadership should act and be seen to act in accordance with these principles, personally and corporately, showing that they underpin all that the organisation does.

COMMUNICATE : Clearly stated and preferably memorable, the mission and values should be articulated to all who interact with the organisation, including external stakeholders. Regular and focused reporting on organisational culture will allow sports bodies to monitor their efforts, engage stakeholders and link cultural issues to strategic objectives and performance.

ENFORCE: Large-scale behavioural failures rarely come from nowhere. Policies and processes should be in place to prevent poor behaviour and when it does occur it should be dealt with robustly. Minor transgressions, if not addressed appropriately, can encourage incrementally poor behaviour.

RECRUIT: When bringing people into the organisation, attention should be paid not only to the skills they possess, but whether they suit the culture being promoted.

TRAIN: Raising awareness among employees, volunteers and board members of issues such as the value of diversity, fostering an inclusive environment or the dangers of unconscious bias are as important as technical development.

Organisations should revisit their culture periodically and not wait for crises before determining whether the one they have is the one they thought they had.

    ———————————–

The thing is do the SFA even realise or care that hey have to take steps to repair the damage a negative culture since 2000 has done to Scottish Football?

Where exactly do Celtic stand on this issue of governance based on their experience of the inherent bias and possibly corruption clearly observable since 2011?

I agree Brendan is playing games with speaking out to the press about job offers. I don’t know if he’s doing this to show his loyalty to the fans or bidding for more power from the Board. He also shouldn’t be bothering about what Boyd says.

The poor performances up till half time last night is down to Brendan and this is what he should be concentrating on. What did he do at half time which changed our dynamic

    +++++++++++++++++++

Even with a poor performance, how many sitters did BR miss?

  12. Brendan was brought in to get the Celtic £49 gullibilly’s to look the other way, as the £49 Old Firm fixture was cemented back onto the fixture list again, without any empty seat rebellion from Celtic customer’s.

It worked. The £49 gullibilly’s queued roon the building for their tickets, without one word about the same club issue’s. The word was out……Celtic supporters have moved on!

Who would have thunk it ?

Six 6 years of, crowd funding “statement’s” into obscure, hun news papers, that are read by two 2 ghuys and a dug, and all of the mountains of information that proved beyond any doubt, even 5-0 in the Supreme Court, that proved collusion between, the SFA and, £49 Rangers FC to break the rules and cheat Celtic customer’s, even despite all of the above, and Celtic customer’s allowed themselves to be gulled, by the Brendan ‘bounce’ as they queued for their £49 Old Firm tickets!

The thing is, why did Celtic PLC agree to this, reinstatement of the Old Firm fixture when, Celtic customer’s had claimed, for six 6 years, that, £49 Rangers FC were not the ‘same club’ as, £49 Sevco FC ?

What do Celtic PLC have to hide ?

What happened to the – “We’re a stand alone club.” – what happened to that lie ?

    Know what did happen ?

Celtic PLC, banked on the Brendan ‘bounce’ to blind side, any ‘same club’ rebellion from Celtic customer’s and, knowing full well, that despite all the humming and, hawing from Celtic customer’s about the ‘same club issues’ that, when you scratch under the surface of a Celtic customer, you’ll find a £49 green hun. And the PLC were correct, and then they ruthlessly exploited that uncomfortable truth.

    As I’ve been saying since MO’N walked…….

“The Game, The Game Is Over,……..The Rebels Have Gone!”

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  13. As much as I love Brendan,I think its about time he shut the F— up.Backing that despicable wee hun last night for red carding Boyata, while Mik was being assaulted on the ground by two Saints players.

Giving the slabbering SMSM stories about China !!!!!!!!!.WTF is that all about.

He should have been asking when was the last time player was shown a Red for dissent. While we are at it,Sutton wants to button it as well.Pandering now to what so many of the Hun media want to hear.Talk

    absolute bollox sometimes.

Thought we were very good second half, considering we played a large chunk of it with a few passengers.Edouarde needs dropped until he learns what a first touch is,and stops looking so dozy when recieving the ball.Calmac,no idea whats going on with him.Needs dropped to buck up his ideas.Far too important a player to be contributing so little.Morgan needs a full game or two.Lets hope Benkovic is back.

Anyway,a win on Saturday,we are off and running.Full house.

  14. Just how many times has the phrase £49 been foisted onto us ?

This could all be avoided if our Board had employed Shug Keevins as CEO,Big Mark Mc Ghee as manager,Wee Murdo as coach, knocked down the stand and rebuilt the Jungle.Told Wee Fergus to GTFwhen he arrived on these shores. After all,The Kellys and Whites were doing a grand job, keeping the flag flying on the old Jungle roof.

Ahhh,it could all have been so different.

  15. Be interesting to see if the Club (PL) back Brendan’s view on the sending off or not? There may yet be an appeal.

Boyata overreacted, but them so did John Beaton- two wrongs that should be cancelled out by common sense.

  16. An Dun,

Nearly every booking he gets is for dissent. The last one he got in the League Cup was for the same thing.Dissent is a Yellow card everywhere else.Thats what we should be appealing.Seems Brendan is quite happy with it.

Someone on here must be able to source the last player in Scotland to be given a straight red for dissent.

*The Wee Mhan had a book out in 1969, “Fire in my Boots”, in it he commented on the leniency shown tae hun players on the pitch, this was during a time when swearing period and not just t the ref could result in an ordering off. He said the huns constantly swore at the officials and nothing was said, he was fined by the sfa for this.

  18. What could Boyata have said to Beaton that got him so riled. He IS Belgian after all.Dont think his Glaswegian would be up to much in the insulting department.

  19. Frequently Kev refers to MO’N walking. My recollection of the reason why Martin left to return to England was that his wife was seriously ill at the time.

  20. Turketbhoy. Perhaps Beaton is well versed in French or Flemish, the languages of Belgium. There are some good swearie words in French…. But then it was Beaton. Naw I take that back.

  21. Reacting in kind to Boyd’s comments is unlike Brendan, think of how he laughed off Barton’s numerous attempts when he was here to draw him into a slagging match , the contrast is stark.

Brendan’s comments about Boyata’s red were disappointing to me as it seriously undermines any opportunity to appeal it. It has zero chance of success if we do appeal imo.

I get the feeling it’s just frustration on many fronts boiling over and contrary to some here and elsewhere , I don’t blame him .

?% behind our manager who has a ?% success rate in Scottish competitions so far.

Fair to say I like the guy :)

    HH

  22. One of the things I like about our manager is his communication skills.

So I back him 100% when he speaks his mind. He should speak when and what he feels without pandering to the board or for that matter, some supporters.

Do you think that’s a fitting way to talk about our manager who has been in charge of our team who has won the last six domestic trophies available?

I don’t, show a bit of respect, he’s well and truly earned it imo.

  25. imo we have to appeal if only to further highlight the agenda that has been set this season from the MIB and the appeals commitee.

  26. Boyata said he regretted the red card on social media last night. The matter is closed as we won’t appeal.
