History turns on nights like that

The score-line shows a narrow win, but the substance of Celtic’s second half performance was significantly different from what we have seen so often this season, including the first half.  Lots of good chances were created – and missed – however, this was reassuring as we hoped not only for a win, but for a substantive change of fortunes.

Moreover, Brendan Rodgers will surely ponder what changes were made at halftime to bring about an effect he worked on since Sunday’s defeat, but failed to materialise at kick off.

The first half provided only more frustrating material.  Leigh Griffiths looked as ponderous as Odsonne Edouard has been recently.  Had it been Edouard who missed two great chances with the scores still level, not Leigh, the French striker would have come under yet more pressure, but even our goal-den striker was finding it tough.

Progress happens one step at a time and with 83 minutes gone, Leigh was the wrong side of the ball when James Forrest’s header was blocked, with a defender either side of him and a third opponent closer to the ball.  Leigh was the most alert man in the stadium.  He swivelled and was on the ball before anyone else knew what was happening.  His finish was none too shabby, either.

I don’t know what was said by Dedryck Boyata to referee John Beaton in the 90th minute but Brendan Rodgers summed it up well, intimating the player passed up several opportunities not to be red carded, but chose to persist with a grievance, the validity of which is moot.  The card was more for rank stupidity than anything said.

Scott Bain has not had much game time recently, so I get that he wanted to be involved in the dying seconds of added time, but his walkabout nearly sent us into extra time with 10 men.  Goalkeeping is first and foremost about decision making.  Scott made a howler.

Ask anyone and they will tell you that inconsistency in defensive selection leads to poor understanding and results.  Despite a catalogue of central defensive injuries, we have now achieved five clean sheets in six games – all with Dedryck in the team.  He’s a leader.

Coming as it did during a form slump, last night’s League Cup quarterfinal was a worry, I could sense the triple treble disappearing in the Perthshire air.  Lesser teams would have lost.  But, we are through to semi against Hearts, which will be played either at Hampden, where we are imperious, or Murrayfield, scene of our memorable 3-0 victory over Legia Warsaw.

As much as I love Brendan,I think its about time he shut the F— up.Backing that despicable wee hun last night for red carding Boyata, while Mik was being assaulted on the ground by two Saints players.

Giving the slabbering SMSM stories about China !!!!!!!!!.WTF is that all about.

He should have been asking when was the last time player was shown a Red for dissent. While we are at it,Sutton wants to button it as well.Pandering now to what so many of the Hun media want to hear.Talk

    absolute bollox sometimes.

Thought we were very good second half, considering we played a large chunk of it with a few passengers.Edouarde needs dropped until he learns what a first touch is,and stops looking so dozy when recieving the ball.Calmac,no idea whats going on with him.Needs dropped to buck up his ideas.Far too important a player to be contributing so little.Morgan needs a full game or two.Lets hope Benkovic is back.

Anyway,a win on Saturday,we are off and running.Full house.

Do you think that’s a fitting way to talk about our manager who has been in charge of our team who has won the last six domestic trophies available?

I don’t, show a bit of respect, he’s well and truly earned it imo.

    DBHOY,

I thought those days were in the past, the “Dont speak back to your betters”days.I will say it again,Brendan gives far too much ammunition to the scum in the hack pack.Tell them fek all.He has been here long enough now to know that they will twist his words to whatever suits their agenda.

Not anything that will favour Celtic.

    ——————

Nowhere did I mention about ‘ speaking to your better’s’ . I agree his comments about the Boyata red were disappointing and have posted such. Your choice of words at the start of your first post- effectively telling him to shut the F / up is where we diverge. It’s disrespectful and unwarranted imo.

Surprised I’m the only poster on here to have an issue with it TBH. Anyway, said my bit.I’ll let you have the last say on it.

  4. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

Embramike, good detailed explanation of the rules on dissent.

Having met you several times I have to take issue with the guy you sent off………for calling you fat

  5. Can anyone be happy about the decision to play 2 games in one day?

I know Aberdeen are not too happy.

I guess the Huns will be happy they can muddy up the field to ensure we can’t play our possession quick passing game.

I’m completely surprised that the police have given it their blessing. (In a non religious context of course.).

Maybe they see the opportunity for overtime and the chance of some inter fan clashes so they can make a few arrests and justify their heavy handed attitude to fan control.

Especially, or more accurately, particularly Celtic fans.

Can we look forward to our management express some empathy for our situation, the danger it represents and a call for sanity?

  6. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    GG,

What quick passing game would that be?

I’m beginning to think having the field cut up might force us to change the laborious possession tactics and make us more attack minded

  7. Good morning CQN from a dark and very mild Garngad

So the sheep have made a statement about the ludicrous 2 games 1 park, 1 day fiasco, I wonder if we will ?

Absoloute disgrace. The huns were drawn last out of the hat and yet they get the most suitable kick off time out of the 4.

    Absolutelyragingcfc

    D. :)

  8. Feck even the Budgie named Anne at Hertz has came out and said she is astonished at the 2 games,1 day ,1 park embarrassment

Come on Celtic we have fans travelling from all over to see us play, let’s hear a bit of condemnation for our time slot.

    Absloloutley shocking

    D. :)

  9. Time now for Celtic to raise concerns over this.

2 games on the same pitch on the same day, while Celtic Park lies empty ?

    Absolutely incredible.

100,000 fans of 4 different clubs in the same city on the same day ?

    Bonkers.

Speak up Celtic, you have remained silent for too long now.

  10. Moravcik you also have a all the Celtic fans not attending but in pubs throughout the city and along comes the zombies to probably drown their sorrows?

Seriously this is a recipe for disaster

Come on Celtic stand up for us for once

    D. :)

  11. So we move onto the Sheep mañana

I hope Lewis Morgan gets more game time, he looks exciting when he runs at opponents.

Young Johnson is in the same mould, but I don’t want too many youngsters in the starting 11

I have always looked forward the Aberdeen games.

    COYBIG

    D. :)

  12. Oh and by the way what’s a happening with the rule clarification on assaulting opponents that the SFA asked UEFA for???

Oh that’s right feck all cause every other Association applies the rules correctly and fairly, and UEFA have said as much, by replying that the SFA knew the rule change and it’s their wrong interpretation of said rule.

    Hunbelievable

    D. :)

  13. morning bhoys from a clear blue sky here in Cheshire,.DAVID66 spot on with your comments regarding the kick off times, utter disgrace.hh.

  14. fergusslayedtheblues on

Looking back at the bbc commentary of the St J game and they have it as ,in the second half

SJ 6 free kicks given and us 1 free kick given .

Considering we upped our game in the second half and were by far the dominant team ,is this a normal stst you would see in such an scenario.

I lost count of the number of times I was shouting for a free kick for morgan as he moved across the edge of the box and being pulled by there right back ,maybe beaton was weary of griff’s ability at free kicks in that area .

In fact I’m sure we never had a free kick awarded in that area all game

    HH

  15. Re Aberdeen game…

Really looking forward to the game, should be tasty in front of a packed paradise.Scores to be settled here I think. Will be interesting to see if Logan and Shinnie in particular can walk the talk from post match last season when they had a lucky win against us . I seriously doubt it.

No need for a team talk Brendan ,get an extra session in with your personal trainer :))

We will be well up for this tomorrow.

    HH

  16. Good morning from a bright and sunny, Autumnal Bavaria. Heading back to Munich on what has been a bit of a marathon journey. I should have completed my return journey last night but Deutschebahn once again fail to make their connections and I had to spend the night in Cologne.

No sign of St Stivs in his Zeppelin so he’s obviously not an early riser. ??

4.5 hours sleep and a 12:00 start to the bevvy session should make for an interesting day ? ???????

The Scottish football authorities couldn’t give a flying feck about the fans unless they are permanently raging, wearing blue and threatening all and sundry:

  17. 50 shades of green on

    Morning Tims..

So we have to play on a pitch after the Sheep and a herd of coos have ploughed about it awe day, will they be able to fix it in time?.

And will they have enough plumbers on hand to fix the toilets in team .

    H.H

  18. To those wanting Celtic to make a Statement, it is imo likely that Doncaster concocted this plan in full consultation and with the full knowledge of his long term business partner, Peter Lawwell.

  19. prestonpans bhoys on

I would guess that this daft decision is all about money. If they were to play outwith Hampdump then their contractoral agreement would be a compensating rent money and catering.

  20. Lost track of which body PL is on.He jumps horses so much.Is it back at the SFA,or the other cheek of the same ass,the SPFL.Anyway,we must make some statement showing our contept for this fiasco. The only fans not inconvenienced by this are The Huns.Even their travelling fans can arrive in Glasgow,a non working day, stay over, see the game and depart,on a non working day.Not so the other 3 sets of fans.Aberdeen fans cant even use trains to get down. Our supporters from Ireland,England, especially if extra time required face a nightmare.

What happens,if their is a downpour during the day.No way can the pitch be repaired. It will be a lottery.

  21. The answer to the Semi final problem is clear. Dont go. Dont put money in the SPFL coffers. They’ve chisen to take the piss by putting the game on at this ridiculous time to suit BT Sport, well just watch it at home or in your local.

  22. Good morning CQN from sunny Roma!

2 games in 1 stadium on the same day.

Even for the shambolic bubblers that run Scottish football that is madness!

A recipe for disaster, moving that many people in and out of a city and expecting there to be no clashes or flashpoints is naive in the extreme!
