Hitler, HMRC and how we were all played yesterday

Do you know the story of the Hitler Diaries?  A shamelessly brilliant German got into the business of selling forged (and some genuine) Nazi memorabilia to sympathisers.  In the 1980s, his masterstroke was to handwrite 60 volumes of, largely mundane, diaries, which he claimed were the personal memoirs of Adolf Hitler.  He sold them for millions.

The Times was the first UK publication to verify the authenticity of the diaries, paving the way for their publication by their sister paper, the Sunday Times.  Both papers had a bit of form in this area, promoting and buying rights to fake Mussolini diaries.  The Hitler Diaries were a sensation when the Sunday Times ran them, at the time, it was regarded as the story of the decade.

Within weeks, the world knew the diaries were fake and wondered how the Times group could so easily be duped, after falsely promoting yet another fascist dictator’s documents.

An entertaining dramatisation of these events, Selling Hitler, was broadcast in 1991, which portrayed Nazi sympathisers and a few historians as gullible fools, but it reserved a different verdict to the Sunday Times.

The newspaper paid £750k for UK rights to fake documents.  On the surface, this looks ridiculous, but the point the TV dramatization made was that the authenticity of the ‘news’ was neither-here-nor-there, enough people bought the newspaper to make the exercise an overwhelming commercial success.

You and I may think The Times made a fool of themselves yesterday by getting a story so wrong, that HMRC took to Twitter last night to protest, “As widely reported today and to clarify: HMRC won against Rangers’ tax avoidance in the Supreme Court, and did not miscalculate anything”.

But we are missing the point.  The Times newspapers know that the authenticity of the story stands independent of its commercial viability.  Their story yesterday was a commercial success, perhaps their biggest in Scotland for years.  Fake news has been successful news for Times publications since they bought the Mussolini diaries in 1968 and nothing has changed since.

And yes, gullible loons are still prepared to believe any revisionist nonsense. The truth is, Hitler, Mussolini and Rangers were each solely responsible for their own destruction, no matter what Times Group newspapers erroneously imply.

  1. Heard a bit of Radio Scotland today apparently it’s 21yrs to the day since Don Hutchison scored and “we” beat England at Wembley, Craig Brown and Cornelius McCann were the guests… was going to turn off but decided to listen, wee Broon (not Broony) could not be more complimentary about a few ex-Celts … seemingly Don Hutchison playing up front was all down to Tommy Burns who Craig B could not have spoke any better off, the Maestro, Tommy Boyd & Paul Lambert also praised highly, in fact he more or less blamed Jorg Albertz for breaking Lamberts jaw (I thought he had just knee’d him in the mouth in the penalty box with no penalty at Ibrox) anyhow I thought it was a really good listen, in Craig Browns 2nd international against Italy he dropped Paul McStay and put Dave Bowman on to mark Del Piero… in fairness he says himself he couldn’t believe he made that decision as his words were “Paul was known as the Maestro because he was a fabulous player”

  2. Previous post .. Paul Lambert would have been marking Paul Scholes at Hampden and Craig B was convinced Lambert would have made sure Scholes wouldn’t have scored one never mind two goals

  3. thought that greg john taylor played ok yesterday , imo he has to up his positional sense , kept wandering into the middle leaving the right wing free also seems very reluctant to take on his man and get to the bye line, always looking to pass backwards or sideways to keep possession, maybe he was playing to instruction our just lacks a bit of confidence.

GlenD – I kid you not – he was described pre-match as Sevco’s “in form midfield maestro”.

Morelos, Jack, Kamara – bumming up of the bang average continues unabated.

Desperate stuff targeting one group only.

Pro football clubs do their homework. They have dossiers on players AND clubs (including the financial position).

The belief that these tactics will significantly increase transfer fees is laughable.

Wait till the Syrian secrets start getting exposed.

The U.K. were touting for help from the French to start a war in Syria back in 2011

The White helmets started by a British intelligence officer who died in Turkey yesterday hadn’t hit the ground before the Russians were blamed. Seriously gullibillies don’t all turn to ibrox.

  17. I know I shouldn’t but Bolivia, Syria ??

Did you no join in the prince Andrew chatter yesterday?

It was discussed, did you try to stop it being discussed, did you offer the same advice to those discussing it?

  20. Canman

Nope, Prince Andrew means heehaw to me and funnily enough I didn’t say (post) what you could and I have a felling you’d post anyway :-) my point was the majority of your posts are non Celtic which is your right

God Bless Peter Lawell a true Celt :-)

  21. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Yes it’s my right, yet you grudge me that right, why is that?

This blog was one of he best discussion platforms for all topics no just Celtic, still can be when people contribute to discussion on wider world issues.

On Bolivia, it’s called empathy for a people who will be subjected to conditions similar to the Irish under the rule of Britain. I don’t expect you to give it a second thought or a monkeys but thankfully there is greater diversity than you and I’m sure many share my empathy.

Syria, was a response to a post that suggested watching a tv show about British secrets in Iraq, the shit that went on and still going on in Syria is at least as dodgy and probably more dangerous to the British population as the exodus to Europe by asylum seekers created by The UK/US/Israel/Saudi axis, provided cover for many terrorists and I for one am not convinced it was an unplanned consequence.

I believe both topics should be getting discussed along with the Assange travesty as all three are very significant to our wellbeing and could impact our freedom, all are relevant to the blog article as they all involve the meeja and its establishment support for the subversion of truth.

Celtic, I support Celtic football team and will talk about them when and with whom I chose, it’s none of your business when, where or with whom I choose to discuss Celtic, if you don’t like my choice of topic then tough, your not obliged to read it, you don’t need to comment on it but you do and usually with inane drivel about the relevance to what you want to talk about or the topics you think I should limit my discourse to. Your harping has not stopped me yet and it won’t in the future, :0)

  22. Celtic please listen on

More power to you Canamalar, keep on keeping on ! I & i am sure many others appreciate your non football/Celtic posts. Your posts at times get me digging around for more info for that & your part in Resolution 12 this tim thanks you. HH

  23. Some non football related post here can become unexpectedly related to some of us.

My youngest was on a student exchange to Bolivia when it all kicked off. We were worried sick , his digs were under curfew, taxi drivers would send them videos of riots and that’s why they couldn’t get to them The final straw was when the Bolivian Uni had told him to check with the local hospitals that their insurance would cover them, it was time to get him and his four mates out of there pronto. He managed to get a flight to Madrid last Friday but had to leave his digs at 3 am for an afternoon flight otherwise he may not have made it to the airport. His mum and I are just glad to have him home safe……even if we are tripping over his shoes again at the front door and I’m £1100 lighter.

  24. Celtic please listen on

Resolution 12 brought me to this site, it was the go to place.

P67 are you ever going to give us your two cents on the appalling stance by the hun lovin bonus thieves, which is our board to vote it down ?

  25. CPL – nice anagram. Hehe.

It annoys me when people ridicule CQN as Board propaganda from young work dudes.
