HMRC learn to love Scottish football

143

HMRC had plenty of reason to hold Scottish football in contempt, after one club hid contracts from them and paid disguised renumeration, cost the taxpayer millions on legal fees, before being found liable for over £100m of unpaid tax and disappearing into liquidation.

Yesterday, Celtic published their interim account and we learned that HMRC are due £10.979m from Celtic, for the six months to 31 December 2024.  Not only are we winning trophies, we are paying for public services!  Celtic are an economic powerhouse, bringing income to tax collecting authorities in Glasgow, Holyrood and Westminster.

Cash in the bank at period end was down to £65.4m (2023: £67.3m), reflecting significant investment in the playing squad over the summer, as well as property at Barrowfield, Celtic Park and Lennoxtown.

A 3% drop in revenue to £83.5m reflects the change in how Champions League income is acknowledged.  There will be a corresponding uplift in Champions League income in the second half of the season, which will also benefit from at least one more home game.

These and other factors, such as an increase in fuel costs, caused profit before player trading to drop to £26.937m (2023: £32.005m).  Almost £27m profit at six months gives a lot of comfort that, in the event we did not make the Champions League proper, we would still trade comfortably without being forced into a tailspin.  No “pack (sic.) of card” collapsing here.

Despite our Champions League playoff games this month, income and profitability is almost certain to drop in the second six months of the season.  Notwithstanding this, season 2024-25 should be the most financially successful in our history.  Players win trophies, not the P&L, but profit pays for the players.  If you want to win, operate at a profit, if you want to win lots, solidify your profitability.

Celtic are one of the best run clubs in world football.  They only pay dividends on the preference shares they are legally required to pay since Fergus set them up in the 90s.  We attract and retain top talent on and off the field.  The 21st century is ours, the rest of Scottish football are there to make up the numbers.

Daizen Maeda’s reprieve from suspension against Bayern Munich tomorrow evening is a huge boost.  Three years after arriving in Glasgow, Daizen is in the form of his life.  He is more suited to games where Celtic are pressed deep than anyone else in the squad and will be a significant part of Brendan Rodgers’ plans to transition against Bayern.

With the League Cup already in the Celtic trophy cabinet and a healthy lead in the league, the Scottish Cup takes on added importance for those remaining in the tournament.  Hibernian will not be easy in the quarterfinal but there’s no complaints, as this is our fifth consecutive home draw across both cup competitions since losing at Kilmarnock in August 2023.

A very Happy Anniversary. Did you meet her at St Martha`s?

Or maybe in these modern times should be asking if you met at The Mungo !!

No JIM she went to THE CONVENT .Our parents had been friends in ANDERSTON since they were young . I knew her all my life and we started WINCHIN when we were sixteen.. I proposed the 25th MAY 1967 after leaving THE CAIRN in BALORNOCK and dancing in STEVE CHALMERS garden in LAMONT RD. Every time we watch it over she shouts BLOUTER IT OVER THE BAR STEVIE.

ad therein lies the biggest concern of all

  3. Brilliant Favourite Uncle and many congratulations for having the second best wife in the world.

One day I was playing (sic) golf at Littlehill. When we got the the 7th hole, i saw a fire in the doorway of the Cairn. With my pals, we rattled doors for buckets of water and we put the fire out quickly but it had been gathering pace and would have got a grip of the entrance doors if it hadn’t been stopped.

    Have a great anniversary.

  4. Well done the board. It is of course just a passing coincidence that BR has been the manager for 4 of our top 5 financial year ends…

  5. I think some people are getting mixed up with spending money to stop Celtic paying tax. If Celtic made £40 million profit, then if they spent £10 m on a fan zone or similar would mean that they would still pay tax on the £30 m. The only way not to pay tax is either to not make a profit or evade your tax liabilities like other teams.

  6. European football to look forward on Wednesday night when the mighty Bayern Munich roll into town. Celtic have been banging in lots of goals in the domestic league but a different ball game to negotiate on Wednesday.

Surprise surprise the mercurial Daizen has been given the all clear, a huge booster for our upcoming task against the Germans.

Looks like we will have a full squad to choose from assuming CCV is fit for a welcome change. One man who has found his goalscoring mojo back is Adam Idah and in Europe of all places with four to his name. Yes I’m giving him that snooker style goal against Brugge, in off the green and yellow and into the pocket which secured our place in the last sixteen. The keeper in green and the defender in yellow jerseys. Adam is obviouslyy has more open space in Europe in attack.

Expect the Hoops are good enough to trouble Munich and get a result after having a great run in this new Champions league.

  7. Am I missing something here…..Daizen gets a reduced ban of one match, yet is available on Wednesday. Can he pick which game he misses??? ( which one would you choose?). Normally you would miss the next available encounter.

And many congratulations to FAVOURITE UNCLE,

    a fantastic innings!!!

    ‘The Men behind the Couch’

Watching Celtic in Europe sometimes used to produce this phenomenon, not so much nowadays we have learned a lot under Brendan Rodgers charismatic stewardship. German sides rock up in Parkhead to face the loud music in this tie, just like any other European night, it’ll have Celtic cars and buses backing up to the motorway, Bavarians already in our city, like everyone else want to sample the Celtic experience.

Cosmopolitans we have been around a while, supporting Celtic should never be taken for granted there’s always someone maybe much further away waiting to take your place. Celtic verse Bayern has its audience, Celtic verse no dancing in Raith, was another reminder of youngsters and broader families enjoying the place, some waiting to be passed the eternal gift of the miracle of Celtic.

Bundesliga sides are like buses, you wait ages and three come along at once in the same season, Dortmund, Leipzig, now Munich, defeat, win, and a draw seems about right and would satisfy most, we don’t really care. It’s history that makes Bayern such a Goliath, in football terms we’re definitely David.

Before it went ‘bundes’ when luminaries like Sachsenring Zwickau once giddy upped in Parkhead to face Dalglish and company, it was the greatest thing that ever happened to their club. Queuing past the car park for a paper ticket to see Tommy Burn’s new Celtic side play Hamburg seems like yesterday, the man from Calton, born maybe a bit too soon within bells of our stadium, chatted to supporters. We didn’t fair well at football that night, maybe he’ll be watching down to a Paradies where we have beaten the best be it Munich, Manchester, Milan, Barcelona or Madrid, we can only ever make a gallant bid.

Enjoy the match wherever you are, may the Celtic be with you.

Right ghuys n ghals 56 years married today.. I got the best wife ever .I knew i would beat the huns to 56 …………………

Congrats to you and your good lady wife.

I am STILL trying to rate my Two Ex Wives, and which one I disliked more than the other ?

Feck it…I will call it a DRAW !

    LOL.

Ive been single for 15 years now, and I just LOVE IT, and having NO WEANS to worry about is also ” no bad either “.

I can do what I want, when I want….I suppose I’m an auld selfish Git these days.

    LOL

    HH.

    I’m just a Bachelor Bhoy.

    HH.

  10. Not only can Daizen, Nicolas and Adam give Bayern a tough night, but I have a sneaky suspicion that AL JOHNSTON may also be a Goal threat in this particular game at Celtic Park ?

I could be wrong of course, but I’m gonna have a wee look at the Bookie odds for ALI J to score a Goal…just in case ?

AL JOHNSTON is 20/1 with the Bookies Bet365 to score a Goal at anytime.

AL JOHNSTON is 200/1 with the Bookies Bet365 to score at least TWO Goals v Bayern.

I MAY have a couple of wee extra Bets on AL J ?

    HH.

  11. So is Bernardo out for tomorrow ?

If so we are perhaps a wee bit light in midfield options for a game of this tempo.

Is the big guy from Palace a serious option for midfield back up ?

  12. Quadbhoy

    Quadrophenian

Fair points re our guys having the belief.

My personal view in Warsaw and Feyenoord was that we didn’t quite have the belief and listening to AJ it seemed to fit with his deference.

Like you guys I really hope we can get in about them and have that inner drive and sense we can win this. I don’t for a second think it will be easy but neither was it v Milan or Man U or Barcelona. Bayern have another very big game this week against a side not in action tomorrow night who took their league title last season.

Lots to be hopeful for. Let’s hope Alistair has his best game yet.

  13. Very illuminating lead…

Celtic giving some of their bunce to the taxperson is fine by me…

Not seeing any breakdown in figures but…

“Cash in the bank at period end was down to £65.4m (2023: £67.3m), reflecting significant investment in the playing squad over the summer, as well as property at Barrowfield, Celtic Park and Lennoxtown.”

There was significant investment in the playing squad, which is always great to see.

Yet there was also significant $a£€$…

So we had our zero sum game “model” in action.

Which of course is no bad thing, so the breakdown in spend will be interesting.

Maybe TBB, ST STIVS or a.n.other can give us an insight.

    Hail Hail

  14. BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 1:27 PM,

Yes, excellent post, always great to see a true benchmark when a quality German side comes to Parkhead.

The EPL, The Spanish, always good for the occasion.

Yet you feel it’s the solidity of the German’s who let you know where you really are.

Alistair Johnston gave an interesting insight in his presser yesterday, we are not going to be underestimating this team.

Celtic Park, the team’s in form, everyone available*, we have the proverbial punchers chance.

*Except the invisible man, who hasn’t been seen for a wee while – a game from him off the bench in an ideal world…

    BURNLEY78 @ 1:54 PM,

Your point t on deference is well made, yet it doesn’t smart of insight and realism.

Two things that can greatly assist in our preparations for tomorrow evening.

    Hail Hail

  15. “Rangers search for feral pigs thought to have been released in the Cairngorms” – a headline in today’s Guardian. Has news of our success on and off the field led them to extreme measures?

  16. If you write does, why would spellchecker change that to doesn’t…

Artificial Stupidly is taking over this world…

I think it’s a fiendish Chinese plot to take over the world…

…if the implant Daoism into our brains that will be no bad thing.

    Just~a~thot

    Hail Hail

  17. Apparently Bayern defence is their weak link, apparently !!!

What if we played 4 up front and pressed like a customer in a brothel, would that work does anyone think.

Maybe A bit naive on my part.

Remember, the old and wise were once young and stupid

    KINGLuBO

  18. Made such a mess of that, I’m going to give it another go…

    BURNLEY78 @ 1:54 PM,

Your point t on deference is well made, yet it [AJ’s comments] does smack of insight and realism.

Two things that can greatly assist in our preparations for tomorrow evening.

  19. Celtic supporters must be the only supporters in the world who concern themselves with the amount of tax the club pays on substantial annual profits.
