HMRC learn to love Scottish football

143

HMRC had plenty of reason to hold Scottish football in contempt, after one club hid contracts from them and paid disguised renumeration, cost the taxpayer millions on legal fees, before being found liable for over £100m of unpaid tax and disappearing into liquidation.

Yesterday, Celtic published their interim account and we learned that HMRC are due £10.979m from Celtic, for the six months to 31 December 2024.  Not only are we winning trophies, we are paying for public services!  Celtic are an economic powerhouse, bringing income to tax collecting authorities in Glasgow, Holyrood and Westminster.

Cash in the bank at period end was down to £65.4m (2023: £67.3m), reflecting significant investment in the playing squad over the summer, as well as property at Barrowfield, Celtic Park and Lennoxtown.

A 3% drop in revenue to £83.5m reflects the change in how Champions League income is acknowledged.  There will be a corresponding uplift in Champions League income in the second half of the season, which will also benefit from at least one more home game.

These and other factors, such as an increase in fuel costs, caused profit before player trading to drop to £26.937m (2023: £32.005m).  Almost £27m profit at six months gives a lot of comfort that, in the event we did not make the Champions League proper, we would still trade comfortably without being forced into a tailspin.  No “pack (sic.) of card” collapsing here.

Despite our Champions League playoff games this month, income and profitability is almost certain to drop in the second six months of the season.  Notwithstanding this, season 2024-25 should be the most financially successful in our history.  Players win trophies, not the P&L, but profit pays for the players.  If you want to win, operate at a profit, if you want to win lots, solidify your profitability.

Celtic are one of the best run clubs in world football.  They only pay dividends on the preference shares they are legally required to pay since Fergus set them up in the 90s.  We attract and retain top talent on and off the field.  The 21st century is ours, the rest of Scottish football are there to make up the numbers.

Daizen Maeda’s reprieve from suspension against Bayern Munich tomorrow evening is a huge boost.  Three years after arriving in Glasgow, Daizen is in the form of his life.  He is more suited to games where Celtic are pressed deep than anyone else in the squad and will be a significant part of Brendan Rodgers’ plans to transition against Bayern.

With the League Cup already in the Celtic trophy cabinet and a healthy lead in the league, the Scottish Cup takes on added importance for those remaining in the tournament.  Hibernian will not be easy in the quarterfinal but there’s no complaints, as this is our fifth consecutive home draw across both cup competitions since losing at Kilmarnock in August 2023.

  1. TOM MCLAUGHLIN @ 2:29 PM,

    Quite…

    As a wiserman than I once said…

    “Render unto Caesar”

    Hail Hail

  2. TML,Chairbhoy,

Sometimes this pace resembles a Sewing Bee.Just tittle-tattle for the sake of it.

Meanwhile,in the really important world,Rangers offer a couple of free tickets to the headline act, instead of his fee,to another Gala Night,at the Edmiston.Quite novel, giving free admission to”One of the turns”.Seems the guy is the writer and performer of the worldwide hit,”4 Lads Had A Dream”????????.Not to be confused with an updated version,”11 Lads Had A Nightmare Against Queens Park”

  3. favourite uncle, great we post and congrat.

very clever to propose on that day, so you will never forget the date,

    I proposed the 25th MAY 1967

something similar in our family, my wifes birthday happens to be the same date as when rangers died, so that always helps remember to get her a card.

Not doubting the capability and value of the Germans squad. No issue with highlighting it publicly either and loudly.

Personally I have no insight as to what the players personal views are and also whether there is an inner belief that we can be a Queens Park to their Rangers. Or even do what Feyenoord did to them a few weeks ago.

That is what really matters. I have personally sensed this past few years that reality check has limited our ambition on occasions. I hope not this time as I do think we have a punchers chance. We have a more experienced manager than theirs and a home advantage with a few special and lesser known players who might just ‘turn up’ and play the game of their lives.

  5. 13 years ago this week we started a great wee distillery business up near St Andrews …. The day rangers died.

I remember my then business partner driving past ibrox hordes at the ‘big house’, in his fancy car throwing a few bags of coppers out of the window like a scramble for them with his Celtic repertoire blasting out.

I don’t think anyone could have scripted how the next 13 years would be though. Jelly and Ice Cream for sure.

  6. so happy to have daizen available.

been watching all our recent matches here today.

his shooting, has vastly improved, very clean techniques, accurate, and even done at speed he always looks controlled, which wasnt always the case.

his improvements for me are very clear to see, and if brendan and coaches see that every day i can understand why they could put up a case for letting kyogo go if that is what he wanted, now to do the same for big adam.

as an aside, as good as nicolas is, if there is one thing i would like him to do, it is to shoot earlier, as soon as the ball is switched onto his left foot, let if fly,

my reality check tells me just do not get beat heavily tomorrow celtic, be brave, but not reckless.

    and then lets see,

  7. TURKEYBHOY @ 3:31 PM,

    Exactly…

As one of the biggest offenders I’ll keep stumm:))

    BURNLEY78 @ 3:47 PM,

Yes, agreed, we are going to get little out of this tie without a high sense of belief…

However, we kinda over did that in Dortmund and our punchers chance ended in a bloody nose…

Yes, hopefully BR&CO can merge our realism with quiet confidence.

We do have players that can hurt any team on their day…

Daizen could be the sign of the unexpected

    PHILCOOL @ 3:37 PM,

    Truth :)))

    Hail Hail

  8. SAINT STIVS @ 3:59 PM,

Yes, the improvement has been palpable… we have a top class player there – Like Daizen, Adam has all the attributes and if he pulls all this together we will have another superstar on our hands.

Have you noticed the forwards, especially Daizen not over celebrating when they score…

A wee respect for Kyogo maybe!?

    Hail Hail

    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    Aye very good FRED BHOY.

    LOL.

I remember seeing the Film Summer Holiday in the auld Picture Hall when I was very young. I sang along to that song in what was one of the WORST Films you are likely to see,

Whoever told Cliff Richard and Melville Hayes that they could act must have been very drunk.

That imposter ” Melville Hayes” was later to appear in a so called ” COMEDY ” on TV called ” It aint half hot mum”, which is one of the WORST TV comedies ever.

    Rant over.

    LOL.

    HH Mate.

  12. CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Today…

BREST v PSG at 5.45 Kick Off.

Then MAN CITY v REAL MADRID Kick Off at 8pm.

I have a very small bet on both games.

    HH.

  13. We know they are a great team currently but back in April 19 1972 on the same night we played inter Milan front of 75000 v inter in European cup semi final Bayern lost for the last time in Glasgow. They lost to Rangers in front of 80,000 that night 2-0. Sandy karaoke scoring a left foot 25 yarder in the 1st minute.

I say this because the Bayern team had 6 players who won the World Cup Final 2 years later and 7 who would win the Euro Champs that season. Yet Rangers who were well adrift of us in the league still beat them and went on to disgrace themselves v Moscow D in the final in Barcelona.

*I remember that night so well as they also had an earlier ko than us so we knew their score before ours ended, I never bought any papers for several days after that but I did somehow hear that prior to their second goal they had a corner and the munich george connolly contrived to fall out with sepp maier and walked out of the area leaving a big space from which reserve right half parlane filling in for their greatest living thug scored.

  15. Tontine Tim

    The Munich George Connelly 😂

    I love that.

I heard similar story re the Germans who were prone to bouts of arrogance. I did get to know Jardine in later life and had a bit of respect to him to be fair. Overall that rangers team were a very good side but we were just a very very good one.

  16. Tontine Tim

Parlane Wille Johnston and Quinten Young were my mums 3 most disliked rangers players.

  17. Gordon Dalziel on SSV –

Rangers are out of the league , out of the cups and it’s not even Valentine’s day LOL

  18. lets all do the huddle on

hibs have announced that the upcoming edinburgh derby is sold out, and that the season ticket exchange system is now open for the game.

i assume only smaller clubs with hardly any money operate such a system, and that champions league clubs such as celtic with tens of millions in the bank would never lower themselves to have that system.

its the only reason i can think of for us not having it.

  19. On behalf of everyone at Celtic FC, we look forward to welcoming you to Celtic Park with the information below here to help you make the most of your matchday experience.

Celtic encourages our supporters to support the team positively. The possession and use of fireworks, smoke bombs, firecrackers and all pyrotechnics are absolutely prohibited. Again, we stress the dangers surrounding fireworks and pyrotechnics, which are a serious risk to spectator safety.

The club and its supporters are rightly proud of our reputation and we encourage all supporters to help foster this reputation at this fixture.

  20. Can I please ask what was the reason that Glasgow Council rejected Celtic permission to build a Fanzone

  21. SAINT STIVS

as a wee aside anyone know where bayern are staying?

Stivs, don’t do it. It’s not worth it. Think of your family. You have too much to throw away on a long jail sentence.

    It’s only a game pal.

  22. You don’t pay tax on interim accounts, tax will be paid based on end of year results. I am sure we can also carry over 13 million from last set of accounts so tax burden will be lower.

Those account don’t include a srack of money from champions league, games, gates and results ot the profit made from January transfers and the club actually talk about the deferred champions league money. The accounts are very good.

Infustructured developments around the stadium to improve supporters enjoyment and engagement don’t need to be justified to reduce tax liability. Infustructure work to promote better customer service I.e.indoor fanzone, bars, museum, superstore, cafe, hotel etc should be the norm.

We are miles behind other countries and clubs when it comes to maximising fan experience and revenue, get it done celtic

    Chairbhoy @ ages ago

    Yes, German sides indeed.

Another one we beat at Parkhead was Cologne, although they’ve slipped since, they were typically Bundesliga then, but couldn’t stop McStay, Collins or Creaney in a typical Celtic 3-0 Euro night.

Happy but changed days, under the Jungle roof.

    HH

  24. Deniabhoy,
