HMRC learn to love Scottish football

143

HMRC had plenty of reason to hold Scottish football in contempt, after one club hid contracts from them and paid disguised renumeration, cost the taxpayer millions on legal fees, before being found liable for over £100m of unpaid tax and disappearing into liquidation.

Yesterday, Celtic published their interim account and we learned that HMRC are due £10.979m from Celtic, for the six months to 31 December 2024.  Not only are we winning trophies, we are paying for public services!  Celtic are an economic powerhouse, bringing income to tax collecting authorities in Glasgow, Holyrood and Westminster.

Cash in the bank at period end was down to £65.4m (2023: £67.3m), reflecting significant investment in the playing squad over the summer, as well as property at Barrowfield, Celtic Park and Lennoxtown.

A 3% drop in revenue to £83.5m reflects the change in how Champions League income is acknowledged.  There will be a corresponding uplift in Champions League income in the second half of the season, which will also benefit from at least one more home game.

These and other factors, such as an increase in fuel costs, caused profit before player trading to drop to £26.937m (2023: £32.005m).  Almost £27m profit at six months gives a lot of comfort that, in the event we did not make the Champions League proper, we would still trade comfortably without being forced into a tailspin.  No “pack (sic.) of card” collapsing here.

Despite our Champions League playoff games this month, income and profitability is almost certain to drop in the second six months of the season.  Notwithstanding this, season 2024-25 should be the most financially successful in our history.  Players win trophies, not the P&L, but profit pays for the players.  If you want to win, operate at a profit, if you want to win lots, solidify your profitability.

Celtic are one of the best run clubs in world football.  They only pay dividends on the preference shares they are legally required to pay since Fergus set them up in the 90s.  We attract and retain top talent on and off the field.  The 21st century is ours, the rest of Scottish football are there to make up the numbers.

Daizen Maeda’s reprieve from suspension against Bayern Munich tomorrow evening is a huge boost.  Three years after arriving in Glasgow, Daizen is in the form of his life.  He is more suited to games where Celtic are pressed deep than anyone else in the squad and will be a significant part of Brendan Rodgers’ plans to transition against Bayern.

With the League Cup already in the Celtic trophy cabinet and a healthy lead in the league, the Scottish Cup takes on added importance for those remaining in the tournament.  Hibernian will not be easy in the quarterfinal but there’s no complaints, as this is our fifth consecutive home draw across both cup competitions since losing at Kilmarnock in August 2023.

  1. Is it possible that a small number of currant buns (who are the currant buns who have recently put their money where their mouth is) finally get it that there ain’t much moolah and the consequences of that?

I was at that game, we overturned a 2-0 first leg deficit. We played Dortmund next and got beaten but the Celtic and Dortmund support got on so well that it lead to our famous “Bumblebee”top.

  3. Evening all.

    I’ve just watched Brendan’s presser.

He spoke about Daizen’s qualities, speed, tracking back and the pressure he puts on the opposition.

Brendan hinted, I believe, that Daizen’s finishing was at first, well, not the best.

I may be wrong, but did Ange not bring in Harry Kewell to help, coach with Diazen’s finishing?

I believe that we are now seeing the fruits of that coaching.

c of e reject an independent inquiry into the abuse of children by their staff.

Apart from the obvious the worst bit of the Jay report which I found was that ‘sexual abuse allegations’ were used as a way to demote and get people sacked; that’s how little they cared about the victims of heinous crimes.

Unfortunately macmoist has come out of his hiding place.

  7. We are long overdue to beat Bayern

    Hearts have done it

    Aberdeen have done it

    Raith Rovers have done it

    Even rangers have done it.

I have been to all 4 games against them and we were only outplayed in 1 of them. Munich 2017. Indeed we should have beaten them first time out at the old Munich stadium in 2003.

It is 11 v 11 or 16 v 16 but we have an extra ingredient or two. The pressure is all on them. Harry might be the hard bit nice guy Brendan speaks of but ‘show us your medals Harry ?’

99 minutes of real passionate authentic support tomorrow night can go a long way. As long as no one hugs me when we score mind you.

Can’t remember were I was in ground that night.

I do remember the next round against Dortmund as I was in Baird’s and a few Dortmund supporters came in. Great lads and made to feel welcome by everyone in pub.

Also remember a few years later Dortmund played the dead club on the Wednesday and we were playing on the Thursday. At our game in the second half some Dortmund fans were leaving around the pitch and they stopped to gee up the ce

At last something I’ve been wishing for years. Prime Video provides the option to watch the game without commentary. Now I don’t need to listen to that cretin Alan Shearer.

  12. Sorry ended up posting by accident.

They stopped to gee up the Celtic support and encouraged the singing. Think they had drawn with the huns.

A wee tip. Bayern v Celtic next Tuesday is live on Prime Video. If you don’t already subscribe to Prime Video, you can get it free for a whole month. Just cancel your subscription when you get to the end of the month.

  14. If that was us playing Madrid,we would be 4 down.Every chance would have gone in,hit the bar, another goal, deflected shot another, like the Dortmund game.

    That offside,ridiculously close,but the move deserved a goal.Good game.

  16. The defender plants his foot and Foden throws himself to the ground theatrically.

As Turkeybhoy said earlier if that was us we would be 4 down and that challenge waved away and VAR agrees.

  17. Result is testament to what AJ said; if you switch off for just half a second at this level, you’ll get punished.

Slack ball back from one player, young defender holds back gets overpowered and Vini’s flick lets Bellingham power in a winner.

At normal speed, I thought ‘not a penalty’.

But then, seeing it again in slomo, I think it was a penalty.

    Cheers,
