Hollow excuses as Celtic alarmingly exposed

156

Brendan Rodgers offered up Callum McGregor’s absence as one reason Celtic were so poor yesterday.  This fails to account for what, if anything, was an even worse performance against Newco at Ibrox in January, with Callum in his usual role.

The manager has worryingly misread yesterday’s capitulation.  If he thinks Callum back in the team is going to move the dial when we travel across the city in May, he can expect a similar outcome to our last trip to Govan.

On Friday, we discussed:

“Celtic went to Ibrox [in January]with no learning whatsoever from [the League Cup]final.  Philippe Clement, who was deep in job-losing form at the time, bossed the battle.

“This Newco team remain dangerous, they have the muscle memory from their last two games against Celtic and have a sense of grievance over the loss in December.  Celtic will need be far better prepared than the last twice we faced them.  We will be allowed lots of the ball but will be subject to synchronised presses.

“Newco will defend their box, play on the counter and largely live of misplaced passes as Celtic try to build.”

Celtic had 71% of the ball in the first half, but by the break were 0-2 down, and survived the Cerny chance, Barron’s shot that Kasper Schmeichel turned around the post and a second corner kick drama which could easily have ended in the net.  The similarities with how our visit to Ibrox in January went are glaringly obvious.

A team which has lost four home games in a row have figured out that if you man-mark Celtic in the middle of the park, you can give them the ball, wait for a chance to run at them and they will be unable to cope.  We have been alarmingly exposed.

That’s why we lost.  That’s why we lost at Ibrox.  That’s why the Hampden game went to penalties.  Against a team who have been abject and sacked a manager during that period and had Barry Ferguson and Billy Dodds celebraing in front of us yesterday.  Brendan is paid the big bucks to get this stuff right.

Tomorrow we’ll discuss Maik Nawrocki and some of the players who apparently flopped yesterday (spoiler: they are not flops).

If PC Lustig or Broony had done what Cerny did yesterday I think we would all have had a laugh and criticised the huns for complaining and telling them to lighten up. It was only water I presume and it does rain in Glasgow occasionally so getting wet is quite normal. Of course it would have been serious if he had spat the water at the fans but it was skooshed from a bottle. Still, the police and our board are probing the incident, so, that’s ok then…the matter is in good hands.

    Lol.

  2. i wish we could play like the rangers, rumbling up the best team in the league and conkering europe.

  3. AN DÚN on 17TH MARCH 2025 3:47 PM

ACSOM today quoted Stein and O’Neill, Stein reminding everyone that you got the same points for beating Rangers as you did Arbroath. MoN quite happily saying he’d take 4 defeats to Rangers in any season so long as we won the league.

*and I quoted yesterday that in season 1968/69 we lost twice in the 2 League games and once in the semis of the Glasgow Cup, we were missing Big Tam, Chopper, Big Billy, the Buzz Bomb, Jinky and the Bear on Scotland duty, while the huns were without their greats living thug plus mckinnon and stein.

This was 15 days before the 4-0 SC Final which was part of another treble, where we were again missing Jinky and the Bear but big George and wee ten thirty made up for it, lining up as wingers but playing as deep lying midfielders, while only stein was missing for them being replaced by sir furious for his farewell game.

From the media…” Rangers star Václav Černý is at the centre of a police probe over his antics in the dramatic 3-2 Scottish Premiership win over Celtic at Parkhead yesterday.” I suspect that Cerny and the Hun board will ONLY get a wee Censure and a warning about future behaviour?

*Or a suspension delayed until next season when he wullnae be here, they have a previous for that, remember the spitfire who almost caused a riot in the so called shame game ffs they’re all shame games when it comes tae them now.

  5. could someone help me out here, posted on the other channel,

i have been told the jungle bhoys actually unfurled a rangers banner, stolen from their ultras, displayed the right way up, then turned upside down, but waitid until 2-2.

    pass it on.

    Evening All

    Strange thing at game today.

Was sat in Section 108 as usual. During 2nd half around time we equalised I noticed a banner just below the section where the Bhoys (our lesser Ultra Group) congregate so more or less diagonally opposite me produced a banner commemorating their 10th anniversary – coloured red, white and blue. The banner was removed quite quickly – it was as though those who unfurled it had not realised its colours as it did not say anything controversial (I think) before taking it down. An odd incident.

  6. The refereeing was 100% compliant with their game plan.

Allowing Raskin and Diomande to foul with impunity.

Allowing blatant blocking of any forward pass free kicks.

Failure to book players for everyday cardable offences.

Incredible tolerance of timewasting. Eg 2 mins 30 sec for rangers to make their final subs in 80th minute but only 5 mins added at the end.

Hate moaning re officials when we lose but.

  7. Calmed down a bit now.I would like someone to tell me,just what Idah brought to the game yesterday when he came on.All I witnessed was a calamitous drop in pace to our attack.Beforehand,we had scored 2,Maeda,and Jota were running them into the ground, resulting in numerous Huns suffering cramp.Surely, putting Jota left,Yang ,right, and bringing Tony on to give them 2 fresh players to contend with, and leaving, full of running,Jota ans Schlupp on the left, leaving Maeda to terrorise them at CF,would have enabled us to flatten them at hat juncture of the match.Instead,we killed the tempo stone dead.

    Very strange subs.

If doing Easyjet, apart from the wee bag you have to fit under the seat in front of you,can you take a manbag type as well?

Ensure your carry on bag is within the new dimensions. They have been quite strict enforcing it with numerous passengers getting charged £48 even although the case / backpack they bought was advertised as suitable for Easyjet.

They allow only one piece of hand luggage per person, however they let you on with additional duty free bags

Brendan had zero answer to a team which just simply said “No Surrender” to tippy tappy dim Tims.

    CHAIRBHOY – 17TH MARCH 2025 12:12 PM

“Well we can say several things about Rocki’s performance – but no way can you suggest that defence played better, I’ve rarely seen them play so bad…”

“I didn’t say they did. An Dun said the team was better than at Ibrox but Nawrocki was the problem yesterday, even though he played better than Scales at Ibrox and Trusty at Hampden.

The defence was terrible, Nawrocki was the best of them.

I did suggest that his lack of confidence probably contributed to the panic at the back, but that isnt on him, thats the fault of the manager for only giving him 30 minutes all season”

Rocki was one of my votes in POTY, the reason I voted for him was because of the grit and determination he showed.

    Important tackles and blocks.

Yet we can’t take away the fact the defence as a whole were so much poorer for him being at CH.

You can put that down to fact that he hasn’t been a regular….

AJ, Ralston, CCV, Trusty, Scales, Schlupp and Taylor – have been our go to ghuys in defence.

All of them know how to fit into the system.

Now again, you can argue that it’s not Rocki’s fault that he’s not had the game time; that’s a fair point, his Celtic career has been blighted by injury and lack of fitness.

He has been praised recently for his application in training by the manager, no doubt we all hope he comes good, yet the fact remains, Nawrocki has yet to show the many attributes that is necessary for a regular Celtic CH.

    TURKEYBHOY @ 9:20 PM,

Did you even watch the match – as HAND OF GOD points out Adam Idah came on at halftime for Kuhn.

Meada went to the left wing, Jota changed to the right, we looked a much better team from the off and should have won the game.

Your – I’m a big fan of Brendan’s BUT nonsense is wearing very thin… another one who just makes up crap to have a pop at our manager.

    BURNLEY78 @ 3:49 PM,

“Let’s hope we do win another treble this season.

I don’t even like it that they have now won more competitive games vs us than we have vs them again. We had a lead there which lasted 4 months.

    Yeah! Let’s hope eh;)

Not sure what you are talking about in that last paragraph, and as usual you don’t use accurate stats or facts to back up what you’re saying, so we need to surmise…

Are you talking about all the old firm games from 1888 until now!? In respect of how the SMSM may look at the old firm? If you are you should make that clear.

Celtic played a team from Glasgow on Sunday.

They first played that team in 2015, ten short years ago.

In your old firm fixation, please don’t confuse “Newco” with Rangers.

Rangers died as a Football Club in 2012 – they did not reform, the reformationists are just plain wrong.

Our current Manager’s record against R2ngers…

    P 21. W 15. D 3. L 3.

So it’s fair to say, as far as our record vs them goes Brendan Rodgers has done the heavy lifting.

  16. *SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*

*RESULTS FROM GAME #47 CELTIC 2 SEVCO 3 (MAEDA, HATATE)*

    Good evening, friends.

It wasn’t very good yesterday. So much anticipation and planning which game we would secure the title pre-split but such thoughts count for nothing if the players aren’t properly up for the fight. And that was the most noticeable difference yesterday – our visitors, despite being much less skilful footballers, were more determined, more eager in the tackle and more street wise than Celtic. Scoring within 5 minutes and then taking as long as possible with every dead ball, particularly throw ins just made for a very frustrating first half. Which got even worse when they doubled their lead just before the 40 minute mark.

And yet, in that second half Celtic really did do enough to deserve something out of the game. Daizen – who else – headed in our first and when his fellow countryman Reo scored the equaliser with 15 minutes left on the clock I really did think the turnaround would be completed. But late in the game, a mistimed jump by CCV and a slip from Johnston allowed Sevco to snatch a victory, scoring their 9th goal against us in the last 3 games.

We still have a commanding 13 points lead at the top. But we still have to win 4 of our remaining 8 games to clinch the title and must get our act together straight after the International break.

Ach, let’s end with a positive and acknowledge the continuing form of Daizen Maeda. He has scored in the last 5 consecutive games. And in the last 11 he has scored a total of 13 goals, only failing to net in 2 of them.

We have now played 47 games this season, winning 33, drawing 8 and losing 6. We have scored 130 and conceded 44 (domestically it’s 115-27 and in Europe it was 15-17).

Thank you so much to the 59 who voted this time around. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

    Schmeichel: 0

    Johnston: 0

    Carter-Vickers: 0

    Nawrocki: 44

    Schlupp: 7

    Engels: 6

    Hatate: 25

    McCowan*: 9

    Kuhn: 0

    Maeda*: 55

    Jota: 16

    Idah: 0

    Yang*: 15

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Sevco are –

    Maeda – 5 points

    Nawrocki – 4 points

    Hatate – 3 points

    Jota – 2 points

    Yang – 1 point

And the overall positions after 47 games played are –

    89 points – Maeda

    59 points – Engels, Kuhn

52 points – Hatate, McGregor, Schmeichel

    41 points – Bernardo, Scales

    39 points – Johnston A

    32 points – Trusty

    30 points – McCowan

    26 points – Carter-Vickers

    24 points – Kyogo

    21 points – Taylor

    20 points – Jota

    19 points – Valle

    16 points – Schlupp

    15 points – Idah

    13 points – Yang

    7 points – O’Riley

    4 points – Forrest, Nawrocki

    3 points – Welsh

    2 points – Murray

0 points – Bonnar, Cummings, Holm, Johnston M., Kenny, Palma, Ralston, Turley

We now have a wee International Break but Celtic return to league action on Saturday 29th March with a home game against the mini-Triggers, kick off 3.00pm.

    Hail Hail!
