Holyrood, Hampden and revisionism on season 19-20

124

While much of Europe returned to competitive actions weeks ago, Scottish clubs were today allowed to resume contact training for the first time since football was banned on 13 March.  For the last two weeks, players have been permitted to do socially distanced training only.

The Scottish Premiership, season 2019-29 is already subject of incredible revisionism, suggesting Celtic campaigned for the season to be abandoned and that, just as across Europe, we could have been playing football.

Celtic’s only interest on how the season concluded was that the Null and Void campaigners lost the argument, just as they lost on the field.  We were 13 points clear, a lead that was growing by the week.  Celtic wanted to play and win the title on the field.

It may well have been possible to finish the Premiership campaign, but after the care home and Nike debacles, the Scottish Government decided to err on the side of caution.  They made it clear to the football authorities from early in the crisis that the game would not be allowed a swift return to normal.

England resumed football three weeks after contact training was allowed.  On the same schedule, our game would begin in the middle of July, with all the costs of playing these games without income, and the need for each club to play three or four games a week to complete before the Uefa deadline of 4 August.

Notwithstanding the financial ramifications, if contact training in England was possible over a month ago it was possible here, but look to Holyrood, not Hampden, for that decision.

  1. Bigbhoy,

We have 23 of those players. I don’t see Bauer, Arzani, Shved (our own but clearly being moved), Hendry and Ralston offski too.

I think Connell will need loaned out and up front it’s a conundrum – Griff feels like he could come off the rails at some point and behind Eddie are 2 punts who need game time.

    Dembele needs a promotion…

In short, there is some trading to do and we have a fairly big schedule of games.

great granda colligan is at home with all his descendents for his 80 birthday.

here granda tells us more about the great celtic players,

well bhoys did a tell yeese that i scored a penalty against the invincible goalkeeper. in the last minute, injury time. he stood there like a plank of wud against a wall

no way granda, i didnt even know yi played.

His name was craig gordon, but come to think of it i dont really remember his saving any penalties

  3. Craig Gordon.

    Magical.

He does his Good works in secret.

One of Celtics Finest ever. Its a long list.

  4. The most annoying thing in football is a squad player, rarely play, never improves and preventing a kid breaking into the first team while generally taking 10k a week for the pleasure. Nothing better than seeing a kid, become a squad player then a key player.

A club like celtic should never carry squad players. 18 first team players plus 2 gks, then we should be into the reserves for replacements.

I am happy to see celtic are cutting the squad size down and cutting the fat off it. Should not take a pandemic.

  5. Jeepers StephBhoy, Wouldn’t agree with you there. Have you forgotten our injury problems in recent years.

We have often had 5 or 6 of first team squad out injured at the one time.

With the amount of games we play we need 2 for ever position plus 3 or 4 utility players,

A squad of at least 26 plus 4 or 5 Academy players for me,

Couldn’t agree more also when you tie in the leniency shown to our opponents when they assault our players. We need a bigger squad than the rest of them.

    KEEP THE FAITH

  7. !!Bada Bing!! on

I think we’d all like a smaller squad, but if you look at the amount of games, and injuries we’ve had last couple of seasons, it’s difficult to manage.

One question for you – was Craig Gordon a squad player?

  9. Squads win trophies.

Celtic used 35 different players last season in competitive games.

    Celtic win trophies.

  10. How things have changed.

Of the starting 11 against Aberdeen in the 2018 cup final only 3 players remain at the club.

  11. The 2018 Cup Final was against Motherwell, & Brooney, Ajer, N’tcham, Forrest , CalMac & Rogic all started & are still with Celtic.

  12. Only 3 left of starting eleven from 2017, but the likes of Forrest, Bitton & Rogic were on the bench, so 6 of Cup Final squad are around.

Reality is 3 or 4 players move in and out every year,

Hello again all you young rebels.

G’morning from a very fresh but sunny Melbourne.

Not heard much down here of the bilious blustering billies.

Are they quietly going about their devious ways and signing

18 outfield players means you have 11 starters and 7 other players who can come in without significant reduction in quality.

Having 28 outfield players just leads to 10 or so players picking up wages for next to nothing and kills opportunity for the kids. 10 players on 10k a week is 5.2 million a year on wages. 5.2 million a year is 3 quality players (relative) in our league.

Those 3 additional quality players mean you can sell/ move 4 of the less effective first team players from the original 18 and can purchase another quality players.

young players who have the potential to develop into quality players with the promise of game time will sign up knowing they have a chance. They will also be training with better players and will be better supported on the pitch when they do get a chance.

  15. Too many injuries in Scotland to go with a squad that small.

I’m all for giving kids a chance but if you can bring just one starlet through each year, you are doing really well.

He was initially a first team player then I would consider him one of two quality and quality gks.

    Joe Hart

    Naw. Just naw.

He was promoted beyond his competence by the insane world-view of the English Press, then accordingly massacred by them.

Hype/anti-hype aside, he’s nowhere near the goalkeeping quality of Fraser Forster, and that’s the man we need as our No1 next season.

Craig Gordon and his hefty wedge is off the books – and a huge thank you to the big man, I’ll carry reruns of some of his extraordinary saves in my head to the grave – so we can surely reach a deal with El Gran Muralla?

I know through most of our history we have been lax in the goalie department, but this is a shoe-in to get what I would say is a world-class keeper for relative bobbins.

Four-year deal, and if he costs us £8 million, so be it. He’ll repay that within 18 months.

  19. Long live the Tory Union. If only we had follow , followed Boris’ lead we could have been playing out the league now.

Watching the playoff at Wembley, Exeter’s Randell Williams is a tidy wee player and certainly can cross a ball.

    …………………………..

I agree with you. Watched him in both semis and final. He was a class above. Fast, good dribbler, tricky and as you say can cross a ball.

If we can find a way, get big Fraser signed, he is an integral part of our first team.

Tried texting Big Jimmy yesterday but no word and I have been texting him each day he has been in hospital and getting reply’s, so I hope he is ok. 🙏
