“Honestly Terrible” Merchants

141

I don’t know who started it, but by the day Nicolas Kuhn landed in Glasgow in January to complete his move to Celtic, the country’s biggest selling newspapers and commercial broadcaster were running “Honestly terrible” headlines about our prospective new winger.

That verdict was proffered by a football fan from Austria, whose credentials in the game extended to being one of several hundred contributors to online database Transfermarkt (which contains player stats and fan-assessed values).  The pile-on from the online media followed as day follows night.

Nicolas arrived at Celtic a stone underweight and with an “honestly terrible” verdict awaiting his first mis-pass.  It says plenty for him that nine months later he is an automatic first choice starter.

No one in the media owes Celtic a thing.  They are private organisations (apart from the BBC) and are there to earn profit and advance the careers of those who earn from them.  So as long as there is a market for an “Honestly terrible” headline about Celtic’s transfer plans, there will be “Honestly terrible” headlines.  Consider the alternative headline – “We’ll need to see what he does”.  Where do the eyeballs go?

You are that market.  The Honestly Terrible Merchants cashed in and moved on long ago.

Transfermarkt today show Nicolas has scored six and created eight goals from 11 games in all competitions this season.  They have also doubled their estimate of his value since January to €3m.

  8. Nicholas Kuhn was a great signing, maybe not at his best from day one but you could see the bhoy had something.

    AIPPLE @ 12:08 PM,

Back in the day I was going over to Las Vegas for an industry conference.

Planned to meet up with a colleague from New York – a principal of the firm.

Anyways the London Director was from New York (on secondment) and the Financial Director (she was friend if his) was over to do her quarterly audit.

There had been an edict that to save costs we should be sharing Hotel Rooms where possible – so thinking it won’t be applying to us I asked the London Director to clarify…

He said we’ll just check with the FD…

So we goes into the office and she asks him to explain the situation…

He says – Let’s see now, we have Tommy XXXX, Chairbhoy….

    ….LAS VEGAS!!

Alas, much of the Celtic fan media are quickly following in the foot-steps of the SMSM.

Some of the stuff they were putting out during the summer transfer window was truly abysmal.

  10. For me personally,it would be a great shame if we were to lose Palma. He has that bit of genius to his play that sometimes wins matches. To expect him to come on once in a blue moon,no match practice, and perform,is ridiculous.I keep saying, because its fact, last season,Maeda injured,he played up until November,10 League goals,14 assists, and 2 CL goals, could have been 3 but for an offside toenail. If that’s a bad player, then I know fek all about football.Media chiming in,trying to wind the dumb among us up,by trying to compare him to Cantwell,on TikTok.Nothing of the sort.Brendan has his views, but like many,I don’t agree with all of them. This is one of them.

  11. Remember a league cup win against the Hun 40 plus years ago 2-1 at Hampden around Christmas, the Celtic end was a Red Sea of ash … anyway the headline in the Sunday Post was Rangers lose cup …. the old fella bought that paper for my mum who liked the wee stories …

  16. The Blogger,

As I posted a bit before, the SMSM taking a very unhealthy interest in Luis Palma at the moment. They smell a bit of blood, manufactured by themselves, and the sowing of rumours, lies, anything to disrupt our club, begins.Too many fall for it.

I’ve never tuned in to any of those, Turkeybhoy.

    COLD KEYS ?

My Granny and Grandad ( Both R.I.P. ) both brought me up until I first got married in 1977, when I bought my 1st Flat and moved out.

As a young Bhoy, whenever I had a ” NOSE BLEED”, one of my Grand parents would get the BACK DOOR KEY to our Hoose in Easterhouse.

The ” Back Door Key” was bigger than the Front Door Key, and my Grand Parents would put this Key inside my shirt and on to my BACK. I can still feel that Key Coldness on my skin all those years later.

I NEVER had Cotton Wool etc stuffed up my nose at any time….Just that ” BACK DOOR KEY” as a quick fix !

Was I alone or did anyone else face this ” REMEDY” when they were young ?

Nowadays whenever I see a Fitba Player having a Nose Bleed and different Physios stuffing the Players nose with Cotton Wool, I am left to wonder WHY those Physios DON’T have a Large Cold Key in their Medic Bag ?

I seem to remember the ” Cold Key” down your back being quite a successful remedy.

Maybe my Grandma and Grandpa were onto something back in the 1960’s ?

I only wagered a very small Bet.

My intention was to back the Celtic Ghirls to win by the Correct Score of ” 5 – 1″ tonight, but BET365 would NOT allow me to place that particular scoreline for some reason, so I settled for ” 4- 0″ ?

    If the Celtic Ghirls DO Win ” 5 – 1″ I will be HAPPY……but angry with BET365 ?

Just like some of the headlines on the complementary CQN articles.

  27. The headlines I always read, are from the football worlds answer to VIZ.Take a bow ,The Ibrox News. They have a guy on there, their” Football Finance Expert,Dan Plumley, who sounds out of a VIZ page, who after a headline of,

“Rangers and Middle East takeover”,comes away with

” If Rangers were to be offered a mega millions offer, from the ME,chances are it would be discussed”

Well thank you Dan for that expert view.So what your saying is,Rangers are not Desperate Dan.

I put the last part in,but believe me,I get 3 or 4 of these on my Google strip every day. They have a football injuries expert as well, who is worse than Dan.

    Brilliant.

  28. I don’t think you can blame the MSM entirely – there was a frenzied atmosphere around Celtic at the time that meant anyone who wasn’t “experienced,” “quality,” or expensive was going to be judged by higher standards than was fair. Another signing from a failing recruitment team, a part of another “failure” of a transfer window, referenced a few times in the Summer when it suited but dropped now.

Who knows, perhaps we’ll have learned our lessons as we get nearer to the worst time of year to be a Celtic supporter – the dreaded January window.

  29. When I backed the Celtic Ghirls to beat Twente tonight by the correct score of “4 – 0”, the odds with Bet365 were 80/1.

Ive just checked the betting again and the Celtic Ghirls are now 100/1 to win 4 – 0.

Also the Celtic Ghirls are 16/1 to win “1 – 0”. I may have a small bet on that scoreline also ?

    ….

Re Palma started like a house on fire last year but I feel his game is now been read better by SPL full backs. Lacks a bit of pace which is a bit of a no no for Brendan.

Still for me plenty of skill and an eye for goal , I suspect at the moment lack of game time is affecting his sharpness and he seemed frustrated in recent outing against Falkirk ( but hey it was a collective failure 1st half) ……. I’d hope there is a plan for semi regular game time , he needs to take a deep breath and go again , he’s a good option to have.
