CELTIC’S Youth Academy Under-16s got off to a winning start in the Mediterranean International Cup in Lloret De Mar when they overwhelmed local side Fornells 4-0.
The Hoops kids put on a splendid show in the Spanish sunshine and Kenny Mearns got the opener when he volleyed home a cross from Thomas Caffrey, who doubled the advantage to finish off some great work by Keiran Campbell on the right.
Celtic dominated after the interval, too, and goals from Aidan Laverty and Kieran McGrath topped off an impressive performance. The win sets up the youngsters for a double header today. First opponents are CD Mostoles with a noon kick-off and then there is a 6pm start against UE Balafia.
The tournament covers a number of age groups with a total of 253 teams competing across the various age ranges. There are 64 teams competing at Under-16 level. Along with the Hoops, there are other top clubs including Spanish trio Barcelona, Villarreal and Espanol.
