HOOPS’ VANISHING ACT

VANISHING spray will be used for the first time north of the border in the Scottish Cup Fifth Round tie between Dundee and Celtic at Dens Park on Saturday.

Fans in England and wales have become accustomed to seeing officials using the spray.

Of course, it was used with great success during last summer’s World Cup Finals in Brazil.

Referee John Beaton will be in charge at Dens and admitted he is looking forward to having the little canister of foam under his belt.

He said: “I think you can see the benefits. It has been used at the World Cup and in the UEFA Super Cup this season and I don’t remember seeing a yellow card for encroachment.

“I think that speaks for itself.

“We don’t have a huge problem with encroachment in Scotland, but there are occasions when maybe players are creeping forward at free-kicks.

“So, anything we can have that helps us with game management and control then we would welcome that.

“I am looking foward to using it at the weekend.

“All the top leagues in Europe are using it now and it is being used in UEFA and FIFA competitions, so it’s great it’s being introduced here.

“The players will get used to it quickly and I am sure they will welcome it.”
