Hopefully the Low trickledown will not reach Glasgow

391

With the announcement that Joachim Low will leave Germany after the Euros, you can prepare yourself for months of speculation about the position of Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool job, with trickledown references to Steven Gerrard.  I want Gerrard to stay in Glasgow.

This is not about getting back into the water after a shark bite.  Gerrard has won one trophy of the eight he has competed for in Scotland, reaching one final in five cup competitions, which he lost to 10 men.  His only success would have been achieved with the same squad by either of his two predecessors against Celtic and Aberdeen teams that imploded so completely both lost their managers.  Gerrard is a bottler who has not been under pressure since Hamilton visited Ibrox a year ago (a game he also lost).

More importantly, Newco will have him under the kind of contract that earned Celtic £9m when Brendan Rodgers left for Leicester.  They need that kind of money and more to make up some of the chasm between their current financial position and fulfilling Uefa Financial Fair Play regulations.

I would rather they needed to sell an additional £9m of playing talent than cashed in on a manager with a track record that would have him taxied to the airport at Celtic.  Celtic’s problems this season are CELTIC’s problems, not the challenge from across the city.  If we are worried about a one-in-eight manager it’s time to pick up a different sport.

    There is no old firm.

In my opinion it would be good if our next game against the huns was cancelled. Preferably by the SG, but I would not rule out Celtic cancelling the fixture due to safety concerns during lockdown.

We would be punished, no doubt of that but the season would be forever tainted.

On another matter the next game against them should be cancelled. The danger of public disorder and safety is huge and we are heading in a very dangerous direction. There MUST be consequences for what happened at the weekend otherwise they will have got away Scot free to do the same again or worse.

Some good points. Also, looking at Rodgers’ European record now among three clubs, this could be something that would make the real big clubs think twice.

  5. If the Government would act it could stop their team travelling to Prague today, in view of the multiple breaches of self isolation by the players since the weekend.

Failing that I hope someone is watching at the airport in case another mob gather .

  6. If i am correct, there was reference last night to the “Old Firm” trademark?

I have posted before about this. Both clubs jointly registered these words to prevent usage by others. I worked with the firm which made the registration.

It is a Word Mark – i.e. no logo/graphics attached, just the words. I expect that it was part of the bundle of assets which Newco acquired. None of the 3 clubs over the period has produced merchandise to promote this as far as I know. It is purely a defensive tactic

  15. If the game is cancelled, watch the excuse being that they couldn’t trust both sets of fans not to turn up at the ground. We will be pulled into the cancellation as part of the problem by the Scottish Media, print and Broadcast. If this is the case then we’ll need more from Celtic PLC than just what we are not ,but preferably, what we are! por cierto

Very much enjoyed reading your piece – and yes I know that by habit & repute Brendan is in it only for Brendan, as his record outlined by you shows (Liverpool sacking the exception)

He did however bring a breath of fresh air & a good deal of professionalism to our club. We were always going to be a stepping-stone to get his career back on track – I’m afraid that may be the case in future no matter who we bring in – sad to say that our club has become an EPL auditioning stage for players, coaches & managers.

Only if we can get out of Scotland & into a more attractive football environment will Celtic be able to fulfil its true potential – when will that be? SOMETIME? MAYBE? NEVER?

  17. HJ- I know the Club badge is copyrighted, but if the OF is basically an invisible term ,why protect it? Thanks for reply

  18. HRVATSKI JIM on 10TH MARCH 2021 9:14 AM

Noting your comment on it being a word mark. Could it be to protect the use of the categorisation when referring to it in the past tense when referring to I pre and not post 2012 when in reality it existed, hope that makes sense.

It doesn’t exist post 2012, to me that’s a given.

As you continually hear and see the term is far from invisible, on the contrary, it is continually used in order to back up “the myth” on an ongoing basis, this is done solely with that intention in mind.! por cierto.

Richard Gough in Rangers and Celtic fan demand as Ibrox legend urges safety

The Rangers hero hopes both sets of fans listen to their clubs and stay at home in two weeks.

Richard Gough has urged Rangers fans to stay at home

Richard Gough has urged Rangers and Celtic fans to listen to demands they stay at home from their clubs to ensure the game continues in Scotland.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon threatened the future of elite sport after Rangers fans broke lockdown to celebrate their league title win over the weekend.

There were also demands from Green Party leader Patrick Harvie to take action while Labour’s Anas Sarwar and the Tories’ Ruth Davidson also criticised their actions.

And Gough hopes the supporters will heed the warning and stay at home when the Old Firm meet at Celtic Park in the East End of Glasgow later this month.

The match is set for March 21 but is at risk of being postponed with the Government concerned over potential plans for both sets of fans to arrive at the stadium.

And Gough told Sky Sports: “The club will be telling our supporters ‘Look, stay indoors. There’s no use going down to Celtic Park next Sunday so stay indoors’.

“I would implore the fans to do that as well and I’m sure Celtic will do the same with their fans.

“We need the games to go ahead, we don’t want games getting postponed now so hopefully the supporters listen to what both clubs say.”

    CELTIC – GET THEM TELT.

  23. I do not want the game cancelled. The headlines will go out worldwide, and we will be included in the reasons why.”Two cheeks”nonsense coming out again. There will be no danger. After the debacle of last weekend, there will be more Copper on show than in Hannaways Scrappy in Coatbridge..

  24. Not a hope in hell our Execs will try to have the Sevvy game cancelled; financial and association penalties for refusing to fulfil contractual obligations, I’d wager. Plus we seem to ken our seating position on the bus!

Not sure if all that Gonzaga twitter stuff about Helander and TRFC non-distancing is just fantasy wind-up – and there was me hoping CEO Peter had a plan based on their implosion; but when the politicians, police and our own patrons are rooting for the other side’s success, the game’s a pure bogey.

So – when does the season ticket renewal theatre start in earnest? HH

  25. PC- I get that mate, they have been hanging on to our coat tails forever, ignore the troll….

  26. As might have been said elsewhere, our ongoing registration of the OF name would probably be to protect our merchandising, or media rights to footage, relating to pre-2012 games eg the 7-1, 10 men won the league, 6-2 demolition derby…

If we share the copywrite of the O F name, surely we could stop the likes of Sky bombarding us with it.

    ========

Good point – I think we could if we really wanted to, particularly in terms of product advertising (i.e., highlighting an upcoming game on Sky).

Nothing to stop the term being used if not in commercial terms – i.e., general reporting.

I think the dual registration would therefore stop The Rangers using the term for marketting purposes, unless done with Celtic’s approval. So – for instance – The Rangers marketting a Glasgow derby between us and them alomng the lines “Buy your ticket for the next Old Firm game” couldn’t happen without Celtic’s say-so.

That said, when have they ever followed any rules / laws / guidance / policy / moral compass?

Your final sentence on the theatre of the season ticket renewal had me thinking of the legendary Glasgow Empire tale of Mike and Bernie Winters.

I have an image of The Great Desmondo shuffling out on stage for an unfunny comedy routine.

Upon Mr McKay coming on, the hecklers would shout “Aw naw, there’s two o thum.”

The Sharp Suited Man presumably would have already used the Des O’Connor ploy and kidded on he’d fainted.

  29. All of their remaining games should be cancelled. That way then only they are to blame for the cancellations. But there has to be some sort of financial penalty to them as well, as I think that would actually save them money if it happened! por cierto.
