Hopefully the Low trickledown will not reach Glasgow

391

With the announcement that Joachim Low will leave Germany after the Euros, you can prepare yourself for months of speculation about the position of Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool job, with trickledown references to Steven Gerrard.  I want Gerrard to stay in Glasgow.

This is not about getting back into the water after a shark bite.  Gerrard has won one trophy of the eight he has competed for in Scotland, reaching one final in five cup competitions, which he lost to 10 men.  His only success would have been achieved with the same squad by either of his two predecessors against Celtic and Aberdeen teams that imploded so completely both lost their managers.  Gerrard is a bottler who has not been under pressure since Hamilton visited Ibrox a year ago (a game he also lost).

More importantly, Newco will have him under the kind of contract that earned Celtic £9m when Brendan Rodgers left for Leicester.  They need that kind of money and more to make up some of the chasm between their current financial position and fulfilling Uefa Financial Fair Play regulations.

I would rather they needed to sell an additional £9m of playing talent than cashed in on a manager with a track record that would have him taxied to the airport at Celtic.  Celtic’s problems this season are CELTIC’s problems, not the challenge from across the city.  If we are worried about a one-in-eight manager it’s time to pick up a different sport.

On referencing that the club statement is due to ST renewals being due, I am not convinced that it was totally with this in mind. It probably was part of it but in my opinion the ST renewals will not be announced until DoF and the new Manager are announced. That will be the club’s statement of intent when the renewals are put out.

Personally, I thought the statement was subtle and to the point, do not draw us in to your failings.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

Get them told Celtic. We dont want their scum support anywhere near our ground whether in lockdown or not.

  3. The statement released in context to what was happening was totally relevant, the problem is as days go by, and we can already see that we are being drawn in, is that its relevance quickly dissipates. It has to be backed up by further more meaningful responses to what is happening now, now that the storm begins to settle. It is during this period that everything reported “goes back to normal practices”. We need to be on top of this throughout this or we will be stuck to them, once again, at the hip, por cierto.

  4. SQUIRE – thanks for the music hall memories ;)

LENNYBHOY – it wasn’t my thinking or point to conflate the ‘not half’ statement with ST; soz if that was unclear.

I just meant that now the league is done – and optimism for the Cup has to be low – the club will need/stage a theatrical performance around who the new guys coming in are (I’d take Petrescu and Moravcik double-act btw)

And sure, our club statement was cute but given our own Execs rehabbing of the blue brand and our own zealots’ protest antics per-Xmas, both teams ‘failings’ share some similarities – if not scale. HH

If this is the case, then the football related mark has also been dropped so this whole issue has been a red herring.

I see the sense in your argument to send out the ST renewals on the back of “good news” with an announcement of DoF and manager.

The fly in that ointment is the need to get the money in, weighed against the protracted process of making those appointments.

My hunch is that our imagination runs no further than S Clarke as manager. So he won’t be available at the earliest until late June.

I wouldn’t fancy sending out ST renewals in late April with either no man in place or in the wake of a perceived need to appoint J Kennedy.

  7. Por Cierto, wouldn’t be suprised if they rewarded their players for “winning ” the league by docking their wages 🤣😂

  8. Think it was brought up last night on here, reeked of sevconian whatabouttry in response to our statement…..

It was 67-68 and Benfica made the final at Wembley in 68, and I was so upset when MU won it because it meant that Celtic were no longer the only team from these isles to have done so. I also don’t want English teams to do well – that immaturity has lasted tom this day – sad I know. Also remember being annoyed when the MU fans were interviewed (cant remember where) before the game and sang, ‘we are, we are, we are the Busby boys’ – I don’t think they saw any connection to you know what.
