Hopefully the Low trickledown will not reach Glasgow

391

With the announcement that Joachim Low will leave Germany after the Euros, you can prepare yourself for months of speculation about the position of Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool job, with trickledown references to Steven Gerrard.  I want Gerrard to stay in Glasgow.

This is not about getting back into the water after a shark bite.  Gerrard has won one trophy of the eight he has competed for in Scotland, reaching one final in five cup competitions, which he lost to 10 men.  His only success would have been achieved with the same squad by either of his two predecessors against Celtic and Aberdeen teams that imploded so completely both lost their managers.  Gerrard is a bottler who has not been under pressure since Hamilton visited Ibrox a year ago (a game he also lost).

More importantly, Newco will have him under the kind of contract that earned Celtic £9m when Brendan Rodgers left for Leicester.  They need that kind of money and more to make up some of the chasm between their current financial position and fulfilling Uefa Financial Fair Play regulations.

I would rather they needed to sell an additional £9m of playing talent than cashed in on a manager with a track record that would have him taxied to the airport at Celtic.  Celtic’s problems this season are CELTIC’s problems, not the challenge from across the city.  If we are worried about a one-in-eight manager it’s time to pick up a different sport.

The fuss about the supporters is, to an extent , a squirrel.

The focus is being diverted away from the club.

Players going to the fans at Livingston

Players going to the open gate on Saturday

Players out the dressing room window

    The manager in his car

The nonsense at Murray park with players car sharing and encouraging fans to party.

All of this is directly down to the club and players, but their role in the whole thing is being ignored in the same way as their other breaches this season.

  2. Weebobbycollins on

BSR…If the referee is Scottish then the small minority would win…as long as they’re not taigs.

  3. Gerrard has now won th same amount of trophies as Danny Lennon, John Hughes and Alan Stubbs

  4. Just seeing pictures on twitter of sevco players sharing cars, windows down on the way in or out of training ground surrounded by singing and shouting supporters.

What are the actual rules on this?

    Is this not a breach?

You can share cars with no masks but have to travel to games with 8 people on a full sized bus? WTF is going on?

They can’t be stupid enough to be filmed sharing cars with 4 other players if they know it isn’t allowed surely?

I don’t get it and it makes the punishment of celtic after Dubai all the more infuriating

  5. Paul, I respect what you say with regard to Gerrard’s overall record since coming to Scotland – one out of eight is not awe-inspiring, however, there are special circumstances.

    1. Whilst we know that. Brendan had issues with the board, his departure was hastened by the appointment of Gerrard. It spooked him to think that in a two-horse race, a former player, recently under his control, now a rookie manager, may upstage him & damage his CV. Remember, at the turn of the year prior to BR’s leaving, the Ibrox club were neck & neck with us. Hiring Gerrard was a clever move by King, aided & abetted by some at Liverpool – was the pinching of the Preston centre-half another helping hand?

King has just said that this is the most important title his club have ever won – from an existential point of view, I believe him. The financial figures at Ibrox must be horrendous at this time – failure this season may have been the final straw.

Referencing King again – he foretold that we would fold like “a pack of cards”….we surely have. How did he know?

Gerrard is, in the eyes of the Ibrox legions, now an unqualified success – he stopped the 10iar, that’s why he was brought to Glasgow – yes it did take three years BUT it was right on time.

Our football management & squad didn’t even put up a fight – how sickening is that?

Trickledown? The trickledown for those associated with bankrolling the perennial loss-making Ibrox operation is that they will now feel justified in doing so, even when things looked hopeless – will they now be joined by others emboldened and motivated by this success?

  6. At a minimum, you should not be expecting to see Aberdeen or Celtic play over the course of the coming week and we’ll set out conclusions beyond that.

The game, and life, is full of opinion

But I find myself regularly disagreeing with our host (who has my respect for his work keeping this blog going)

The Huns are a good team built with little money

Undefeated so far in the SPL and still in Europe

The reason we lost the league this year is because we have been underestimating the Huns for a couple of years now

This underestimation made PL think it was OK to wander into the showers for a manager

So forgive me for being rude to our host – but he talking absolute rubbish about Gerrard being a bottler

This attitude will have some on our board think its OK to hire Mr Ross from Hibs or even wee Derek now gone from Aberdeen

Until we accept we are second because they are better- we will always be second

We are in a fist fight we have been since last year

We are unprepared for a resurgent Hun

Slagging off Gerrard may make you feel good for a while but we still lost the league

And BTW its nothing to do with we Nichola either (although we agree i can’t stand her)

Or Covid or no fans or injuries

We are not very good – and they are better

Paul67 I suppose you think Gerrard will bottle next week at our place ??

    Wake up Paul67

Dominic McKay if you read this blog do not listen to Paul67, he will make you think the Huns are skint so there is nothing to worry about

On loan with Marseille for the rest of the season, things have gone disastrously for Ntcham in Ligue 1. The former Manchester City prodigy has struggled for regular minutes under interim boss Nasser Larguet.

Before last Wednesday’s game against Lille, Ntcham had yet to start a single game despite joining at the start of February. However, he was hooked at half-time in that one as his new club lost 2-0 ”

Quite a daft post from you today, on the Ibrox finances.

When some of write that they are skint, we’re not making it up. They ARE skint. How do we know that? Because it’s in their accounts, in black and white. They spend more than they earn. They post losses year on year. Yes, they have, up until now, been able to find mugs willing to keep the lights on with equity confetti … but the fact remains – and it is a FACT – that this is a club living beyond its means.

It’s not a conspiracy theory. There are hard numbers backing it up. It’s a fact. I can’t say it more plainly than that, and if Scottish football had FFP regulations they would not pass them. UEFA regulations permit a certain degree of equity confetti but Paul is right that they have tested the limits of it.

And when Phil, myself and others state that they need “X to keep the lights on”, once again, sorry to say, that’s not speculation. Almost everything we’ve written on this subject is based on information which is in the public domain. Almost everything. Part of it is intuition, and part of it, like the story about them owing the tax man money again, is good journalism.

That story, by the way, has since been confirmed by the club’s own published accounts.

Believe The Daily Record hypothesis and eejits like Kieran “football finance expert” Maguire as you like. But the fact – THE FACT – as borne out in their OWN PUBLISHED FIGURES is that they are running on fumes. They built this success on debt. Like the old club did.

You know how long before the roof fell in at Ibrox last time some of us were writing about it? I published my first piece on it in 2008. Paul had been writing about it way before that. It took years to vindicate our view then. If it takes another two or three to vindicate us this time then so be it, but I know – I KNOW – that we will be vindicated on it. You know how I know?

Cause 1 plus 1 is 2 and 2 minus 4 puts you in the negatives. That’s how they run their business over there.

  13. Someone posted earlier that “Their success this season is on Celtic”. It seems to be a sentiment shared by many.

It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee. Their success is down to their manager finding a system that makes them tough to beat and allows them to score goals without the need for a great front line. It’s disappointing to lose the title, but congrats to them and hopefully we can remind them on their visit to Parkhead later this month that we are capable of much more than we showed this season.

Thankfully living out of Scotland allows me to dodge the news and generally ignore the hype the media are creating. Let’s lick our wounds and get our act together for both domestic and CL competition next tear.

  14. Just a blip then, that’s ok.

For goodness sake, fans were telling the board over a year ago not to fall asleep at the wheel. We knew what was coming and all it would take is a well drilled professional outfit who knew how to grind out results.

Well now it’s happened and the just a blip line us being wheeled out by players and fans alike. This was not a blip, it was inevitable as will be our failure to succeed quickly if we don’t learn that lesson fast.

  16. LENNYBHOY,

Cheers mate.My point on the Hun finances,is that, going by normal financing, they could not survive. No one can tell me that the Directors have pumped in that amount of money for confetti shares. They do not get”Soft loans”.A couple of weeks ago,I posted that they were trying to offload Brandon Barker,a bit player for them, and failed because his wages were far too high. What does that tell you about the money they are paying out.Slippy and his team will be costing mega bucks as well.Any logical punter would agree, this cannot go on,unless, and its a very shady ,unless, they are receiving monies from other areas.

  21. Jurgen Klopp’s race has probably run at Liverpool and expect the German FA to come looking for him to take over the national side after the Europeans.

Gerrard, Beale and Gary Mcallister all top level football men have done well to mould average players into a successful team at Ibrox. As we know good football men at the helm does not always guarantee success but it has worked over at Rangers. Interesting Take Conor Goldson who was down the pecking order below Shane Duffy at Brighton has emerged a solid defender under that coaching trio at Rangers.

You have to sit up and take notice of their form particularly in Europe against Dutch,Portuguese, Turkish and Belgian opposition and recognise Celtic will have their work cut out to get back top spot next season.

Steven Gerrard and his management team may not get the Liverpool job but possibly a mid to lower EPL side could be their destination.

  22. A lot on here don’t want John Collins back at Celtic,so tell me what has he done to be unpopular with Celtic Fans ,John was a good player when he was with us, The other moan a lot have on here is the supposedly fitnes s of the players,Well John Collins is the man to fix there fitness, what that does is it will separate the men from the boys ,and if some of them can’t hack it get rid of them not good coaches.

I suppose it was the way worded my post.

Basically what I was trying to say was I am tired of reading that they are skint. I have known this pre-2012, as far back as you were writing about it in 2008. I do not dispute what you, Phil or P67 post about their lack of finances. I’m just tired of it. I genuinely believed in 2012 we were getting rid of them for good.

I wholeheartedly accept and acknowledge they are skint and have no credit facility.

My dream and the only thing I want is the end, for good.

I hope you and Phil are correct and the reincarnation goes the way of the oldco. I will be the first to jump for joy but bottom line is this should have happened in 2012. In my opinion is that they have been allowed to continue as they are the establishment club. If your prediction comes to pass, it should not result in a further club pitching up.

I haven’t read The Daily Record for years either the paper or online, couldn’t tell you if Kieran “football Maguire is linked to them.

As I started off and tried to put across in my earlier post and why I said I rarely comment is that I know they are dead. Yes, it will no doubt come to pass your prediction comes to pass but they will be around in some form, they will never go by the way of Third Lanark. The next time it happens I hope I read you, Phil, P67 or others write the article “That’s all Folks”.

I don’t know if that makes my first post look less daft. All I want is them finished for good the next time.

    Keep the Faith!

I think the goal is for Celtic to win the SPFL and do well in Europe. What happens to rangers should not be a reference point for Celtic. Although I would personally prefer a strong rangers team as I think competition is good for Celtic and for the reputation of Scottish football. I have no particular axe to grind.
