Hopefully the Low trickledown will not reach Glasgow

391

With the announcement that Joachim Low will leave Germany after the Euros, you can prepare yourself for months of speculation about the position of Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool job, with trickledown references to Steven Gerrard.  I want Gerrard to stay in Glasgow.

This is not about getting back into the water after a shark bite.  Gerrard has won one trophy of the eight he has competed for in Scotland, reaching one final in five cup competitions, which he lost to 10 men.  His only success would have been achieved with the same squad by either of his two predecessors against Celtic and Aberdeen teams that imploded so completely both lost their managers.  Gerrard is a bottler who has not been under pressure since Hamilton visited Ibrox a year ago (a game he also lost).

More importantly, Newco will have him under the kind of contract that earned Celtic £9m when Brendan Rodgers left for Leicester.  They need that kind of money and more to make up some of the chasm between their current financial position and fulfilling Uefa Financial Fair Play regulations.

I would rather they needed to sell an additional £9m of playing talent than cashed in on a manager with a track record that would have him taxied to the airport at Celtic.  Celtic’s problems this season are CELTIC’s problems, not the challenge from across the city.  If we are worried about a one-in-eight manager it’s time to pick up a different sport.

  1. Sevco have been slowly gaining on us the last couple of years and we have been blind to it – preferring to laugh at their end-of-season collapses and cup defeats. But the fact remains, they finished 40 points behind us under Pedro and were getting beaten by Niederkorn – they are now 20 points clear and looking forward to another European knock-out tie.

As their European results have been getting more impressive and they’ve been matching us in the head-to-heads, we still refused to admit they were improving – calling them “lucky” or every opponent they play “gash”.

Now, they are well ahead of us on the field and people still want to turn a blind eye. This is dangerous. Yes, Slippy has only won one trophy but do they care? That’s the one trophy he was bought in to win and similarly the second trophy (after the nine) that Lennon was brought in to win.

We have two choices here. Firstly, continue to call them “lucky”, “gash” etc and ridicule Slippy while they pull further ahead on the field. Or the second option which is to realize we have a genuine contender for the title again, rise to the challenge and take our title back.

    Which will it be?

I’m with you on that one too!

Agree, their European results crush any allegations of being lucky.

For me, our greatest flaw was that we started buying players with

the idea of selling them at profit rather than filling shortages in the

team. Yes the team not even the squad. We have spent years messing

around with a lack of decent defenders and continue to do so.

Imagine a serious team having to field 2 loanees at full back.

  4. No doubt Celtic will be represented by Hawthorn and his staff at the forthcoming meeting with the Government, in advance the board should meet, decide that the game isnt going aghead as the club cannot guarantee that people do not turn up nor do we have any trust in the Police to prevent people being allowed to congregate, SKY and its money can GTF.

  5. Never heard it myself but a friend just told me that a Celtic fan on one of the radio phone ins stated if Rankers have 55 titles then we can win 10 in a row next season

    Re McGeady and McCarthy

McQueen, who played 30 times for the Scots between 1974 and 1981, pulled no punches in slamming the Ireland pair for choosing the land of their grandparents over the country of their birth….

    He then said…

“I played alongside the likes of Bob Wilson and Bruce Rioch, who were born in England but they always considered themselves Scottish.”

So, they didn’t play for the country of their birth either…but that’s ok?

  7. Any sign of a new management team Paul67.

Or are we more interested in SG and how poor a manager is.

That’s the reason we failed this season, because we had a poor manager

  8. Gerrard was the right manager at the right time for sevco. Aside from other factors which have been mentioned elsewhere Scotland has a bunch of referees and an SFA who are biased, incompetent and insecure; with a deep-seated inferiority complex to English football. Enter Gerrard, when he speaks the football world listens, and more importantly they don’t question. It’s all too easy to dismiss a “raging” Neil Lennon, but the Scottish FA nor media don’t get to tell the rest of the UK that Liverpool and England legend Steven Gerrard is talking rubbish, that wouldn’t fly at all.

Put that together with a bunch of insecure referees and you get a natural bias being pushed to the max, and hence zero penalties against, and not a single player sent off all season.

  9. Three players who never played for the land of their birth spring to mind.

Dick Gough, Stuart McCall and Andy Goram. I wonder why they were never lambasted🤔

that’s a good point. We should not forget how the media fawned over Rodgers when he arrived. He was coming up into the studio after games; everyone hanging on his every word.

If you were a Partick Thistle fan watching Celtic under Rodgers, you would think we were seen as the special ones by the establishment then

All those years ago, did anyone ever mention going for 54? No, didn’t think so.

They know we know that they know…

  12. Not seeing your logic Paul !

However I would float this out on the blog

I offer to you at this time that we are much (a lot) further behind the rotten mob in every part of football operations today than they were behind us last year at this time .

Therefore unless the have the same type of crash we had this season (seems unlikely) we are bang in trouble next season .

The blind refusal to accept the Hun is a street ahead of us is only going to excererbate things next season.

We well have our thoughts but we are now very close to not having a chance next year .

This, I thought, was the best bit.

The Rangers chairman has also written to Police Scotland expressing “exasperation” at comments yesterday “given the amount of work and effort that was put into engagement over the last number of weeks.”

) Rangers FC chairman: “We cannot understand that after police intelligence clearly highlighting that a celebratory crowd would gather, street furniture was not removed as is standard practice.”

Ha, if it wasn’t for those pesky benches!!!

Nothing about fans gathering in a pandemic.

They are bitter to the core.

Just when you thought the sense of entitlement couldn’t get any worse ,Park said the Council should have removed the benches from George Square…….something has to be done here

  14. fanadpatriot on

    Bada Bada

If you were expecting people to come to a party would you not remove your furniture,Oh wait we are not huns

  15. By the way, why would the Council remove those benches? There wasn’t supposed to be any kind of gathering. If the deid team’s board knew there was going to be such a gathering, it was incumbent on them to do all they could to stop it, rather than encourage it.

  16. !!Bada Bing!! on

PCS- Council just said they never remove them, ‘ the vast majority of people are possessed with enough human decency, not to vandalise them’

    Here’s 2:

1)Celtic played this same opposition on four occasions,in league, league cup and Scottish cup, within thirteen days in March 2015?

2)Who was the first ‘Lion’ to receive a winners medal at Hampden?

  18. “This has to be said about Rangers, as a Scottish Football club they are a permanent embarrassment and an occasional disgrace. This country would be a better place if Rangers did not exist.”

    Ian Archer (journalist, 1970s

  19. 2)Who was the first ‘Lion’ to receive a winners medal at Hampden?

Bobby Murdoch with a school or boys club team ?
