Hopefully the Low trickledown will not reach Glasgow

391

With the announcement that Joachim Low will leave Germany after the Euros, you can prepare yourself for months of speculation about the position of Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool job, with trickledown references to Steven Gerrard.  I want Gerrard to stay in Glasgow.

This is not about getting back into the water after a shark bite.  Gerrard has won one trophy of the eight he has competed for in Scotland, reaching one final in five cup competitions, which he lost to 10 men.  His only success would have been achieved with the same squad by either of his two predecessors against Celtic and Aberdeen teams that imploded so completely both lost their managers.  Gerrard is a bottler who has not been under pressure since Hamilton visited Ibrox a year ago (a game he also lost).

More importantly, Newco will have him under the kind of contract that earned Celtic £9m when Brendan Rodgers left for Leicester.  They need that kind of money and more to make up some of the chasm between their current financial position and fulfilling Uefa Financial Fair Play regulations.

I would rather they needed to sell an additional £9m of playing talent than cashed in on a manager with a track record that would have him taxied to the airport at Celtic.  Celtic’s problems this season are CELTIC’s problems, not the challenge from across the city.  If we are worried about a one-in-eight manager it’s time to pick up a different sport.

Bobby Murdoch won a medal with Middlesbrough, when they were promoted. The League Cup Final was played in December 1973,and I’m not sure if Bobby got his medal for 72/73 or 73/74.

  8. I thought it might be a trick question, as in which lion win something at Hampden before playing for Celtic, I dont know if the Burgh Cup final was at Hampden, probably it was at Shawfield or that Oatland football park that the schools used.

It’s a competition that thousands of Rutherglen and Cambuslang youngsters competed in over the years – now the Burgh Cup is back with a name that pays tribute to one of the area’s most famous sons.

The competition was played last week for the first time since 1978, under its new name of the Bobby Murdoch Primary Schools Memorial Cup.

    ADVERTISING

The competition first took place in 1910.

This year’s winners were St Charles’ Primary, who defeated St Mark’s in the final.

The stand out player award was given to Chris Neeson of St Charles’, with the prizes being handed out by Bobby’s widow, Kathleen, and eldest son, also Bobby.

Bobby, who went on to lift the European Cup with Celtic in 1967, had won the Burgh Cup as a youngster with St Columbkille’s in 1953.

Bobby Murdoch Jr was honoured that the family were asked to be part of the revitalised tournament.

He said: “Our dad is rightly remembered as part of a legendary team who will live on in hearts and minds for a long time to come.

“But his roots are right here in Rutherglen. This is where he honed his skills in the playground as a boy and, the winning of the Burgh cup in his school days meant as much to him then as lifting that iconic silverware in 1967.

Youngsters in action at the tournament (Image: Lynne.Carstairs@southlanarkshire.gov.uk)

We are all genuinely delighted that the tournament has been brought back as the Bobby Murdoch Primary Schools Memorial cup, nurturing and showing off the skills of kids across Rutherglen and Cambuslang.”

Councillor David Watson, Chair of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, who are behind the revival of the tournament, hopes that the young players of 2018 will take inspiration from that achievement.

He said: “Rutherglen and St Columbkille’s Primary helped make Bobby the man he was, and memories of him as a player, but also as the boy who grew up alongside them, are what Ruglonians hold so dear, and why they hold him in such respect.

“It makes perfect sense that a tournament which is designed to nurture and encourage grass roots football in the area should be held in his honour.

“He was one of the greatest of his age, in fact of any age, and more than half a century on from that famous victory, we are proud to remember him still as one of our own.

“Well done to all of the young footballers who have taken part here in what is the first of many successful tournaments to come.

“And, our thanks go to Kathleen and Bobby for making it extra special by agreeing to present the cup to our worthy winners.”

Taking part in the contest were three teams from Burgh primary, three from St Charles, two from Hallside and teams from Calderwood, Cathkin, St Cadoc’s, St Columbkille’s, St Mark’s and Newton farm.

    Regarding the FM’s comments today

I’ll begin by clearly stating I haven’t heard them.

That said, I do think the club could do a little bit more by way of response safely – without incurring huge risk of subsequent Punch and Judy stuff.

We famously took the hump when Salmond said we needed the other lot.

Genuine question – what’s the downside of drafting a statement along the following lines and simply cutting, pasting and publishing each and every time a politician opens their cake hole?

“Celtic Football Club would like to reassure our wonderful supporters, our sponsors and our friends throughout the footballing world that we have reviewed the circumstances of yesterday’s scenes which have now been seen around the planet and are satisfied that our supporters are not the subject of any official enquiries or investigations.

We can offer no logical explanation as to why the [ Insert role in govt ] choose to identify ‘Celtic’ by name (first) and respectfully suggest those who seek clarity in relation to these comments contact [ insert role in govt ] via the communication channels published on the Scottish Government Website.
