Hopefully the Low trickledown will not reach Glasgow

391

With the announcement that Joachim Low will leave Germany after the Euros, you can prepare yourself for months of speculation about the position of Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool job, with trickledown references to Steven Gerrard.  I want Gerrard to stay in Glasgow.

This is not about getting back into the water after a shark bite.  Gerrard has won one trophy of the eight he has competed for in Scotland, reaching one final in five cup competitions, which he lost to 10 men.  His only success would have been achieved with the same squad by either of his two predecessors against Celtic and Aberdeen teams that imploded so completely both lost their managers.  Gerrard is a bottler who has not been under pressure since Hamilton visited Ibrox a year ago (a game he also lost).

More importantly, Newco will have him under the kind of contract that earned Celtic £9m when Brendan Rodgers left for Leicester.  They need that kind of money and more to make up some of the chasm between their current financial position and fulfilling Uefa Financial Fair Play regulations.

I would rather they needed to sell an additional £9m of playing talent than cashed in on a manager with a track record that would have him taxied to the airport at Celtic.  Celtic’s problems this season are CELTIC’s problems, not the challenge from across the city.  If we are worried about a one-in-eight manager it’s time to pick up a different sport.

Re memorable Euro games from the last 9 years

We still talk of Charlie Nic’s team winning in Amsterdam in 82 even though we only reached the EC 2nd round and were out of Europe well before Xmas.

We talk of the 5:0 UEFA win against Sporting Lisbon in November 83 even though we got knocked out in the next round (the third)

In the whole of the 80s

We competed in the EC on 4 occasions- 1 first round knock out and 3 second round ko’s to Sociedad, Kiev and Bremen

We were in the ECWC on 4 occasions- knocked out in the first round on 3 occasions and in the 2nd round once to Rapid Wien

We competed in the UEFA cup, which was the third tier in Europe, on 2 occasions, losing in the 3rd round to Forest and the first round t Dortmund.

This was not a decade of high achievement by Celtic in Europe but we remember and cheris these games because we were young and optimistic and not to far removed form our 66-74 period of domination.

The 90’s were even worse, We were in the diddy UEFA cup on 7 occasions when it was still the 3rd tier event. (2 first round knock out and 6 2nd round ko’s). we made the CWC on one occasion only and were out in the 2nd round. We made the CL once and got papped out by Zagreb in the 2nd qualifying round before also losing in the 2nd round of UEFA cup that year to Zurich. We did not have one single memorable European game in that decade; the best we managed was getting knocked out on away goals by Liverpool in a First round UEFA tie.

So, there’s twenty years in Europe with only Ajax away and Sporting at CP firmly lodged in the memory’s pleasure banks.

In contrast, the past 10 years have given us much more to remember

a last 16 CL appearance vs Juve in 2013, after beating Barca and Spartak Moscow

a last 32 Europa narrow loss to Inter in 2015

2 draws with Man City in 2016

Doing the double over Lazio in 2019 as well as beating Rennes and Cluj at home

I don’t regard this decade as any downsizing from the 80s and 90s. Only rosy tinted specs would convince otherwise.

We should, I accept, still be striving to be a bit better in Europe than we managed

    Connection to the Cellic?

  8. The social media post is funny, cheeky, and not really an issue in itself.

The real issue is the PLC jumped into bed with the huns 5 years ago when the tribute act entered the top division for the first time. Actions speak louder than words. Many of us warned against this even when we lorded it over this new football club. It is inconceivable and untenable that Celtic continue to do any business with Douglas Park. Todays statement by him is reckless and neanderthal in the extreme. I’m sorry but bending over backwards for a number years and then trying to claim a win with a quip PR post doesn’t wash. You reap what you sow and the PLC are getting bucketloads of toxic hun infested hubris, something they were too arrogant and lacked the foresight to see coming.

  9. I thought the Belfast Bhoys might get the answer, but I suggest none of my fellow Celts will get the answer – especially if they don’t google it.

Paul, I respect what you say with regard to Gerrard’s overall record since coming to Scotland – one out of eight is not awe-inspiring, however, there are special circumstances.

Whilst we know that Brendan had issues with the board; his departure was hastened by the appointment of Gerrard. It spooked him to think that in a two-horse race, a former player, recently under his control, now a rookie manager, may upstage him & damage his CV.

Remember, at the turn of the year prior to BR’s leaving, the Ibrox club were neck & neck with us. Hiring Gerrard was a clever move by King, aided & abetted by some at Liverpool – was the pinching of the Preston centre-half another helping hand?

*Fully concur with this and yes I have no doubt that sleekit effer had a hand in the PNE player they signed.

They have a previous in this, albeit many years ago, when the swapped Lex Baillie’s da for a promising full back and Scotland Under 23 International fae the Hi Hi, findlay junior mcgillivray, he never kicked a ball for them in earnest and only lasted 1 season before moving on tae Bradford Park Avenue and then St Johnstone.

I disagree a bit at slippy’s and the glorified nipper’s appointment as I believe the melwood backroom staff spooked him even more as he was there at the same time as them.

Now the smsm are making beale out to be a genius but this is the same coach that was at hunden when we beat them in the LC Final.

He was also there when they had their meltdown after the winter break losing at the relegation bound calvinists in the League and 4 weeks later in the SC as well as drawing at home tae the sheep, losing tae the accies at the same venue and another tie up at Perth.

Now it’s alleged that last summer when slippy was tipped for the Bristol job he intervened telling him Lenny was a lousy coach and manager, what did he really know.

I also realise that it’s fashionable right now, and has been for a while; tae cast aspersions at the kaiser, sharp suited mhan and one of our most successful managers, bettered only by MON, William Patrick Maley and the Big Mhan.

Some of that is fueled by personal feelings, especially where big gas meter is concerned, but most is the propaganda propelled by our haters in which our fhans have picked up in, as the old saying goes if you throw enough scheitd at the wall some of it will stick, goebbells would be proud of them.

As for the fraud, I’m not going tae deny he was good for us initially and we were all delighted when he arrived, but don’t forget back then he couldnae buy a job and it worked out great for both him and the club.

Also unlike MON who replaced the hapless barnes, he took over from Ronny assisted with the much discussed right now John Collins, they were anything but failures with 2 Titles and 1 LC and as we all know he was robbed of doubles and trebles by “honest mistakes”, we were a proper coached and highly fit side with fraud just having tae tweak a bit here and there and too be perfectly honest sevco were absolutely scheitd.

He has a couple of traits with MON, both come fae the black north and left there at a young age tae play the game in England. Both were not initially Celtic supporters but at least the Blessed Martin has the decency tae admit that it was his da who was the Celtic mhan while he himself favoured Sunderland as they played in the same colours as his beloved Derry, also one of his favourite ever players Cork born Charlie Hurley was a legendary Black Cat.

The fraud however, even though he came fae a Celtic minded family, was NEVER one of us as confirmed by his cousin Ballymena born Nigel Worthington who played for Sheffield Wednesday who he follow followed instead.

After guiding Watford to safety he quickly became the favourite tae replace Steve Coppell at Reading where he had played as a lad.

He initially distanced himself from this saying that his “concentration (is) fully on Watford”. However, he eventually agreed a deal to become the new manager of Reading on 5 June 2009, after a compensation package worth an initial £500,000 with Watford was agreed, which later rose to £1 million.

The Watford Supporters’ Trust stated that Rodgers’ reputation was “severely damaged” in the eyes of the supporters as a result of the move, but they nevertheless “thanked him for his efforts last season” and “(wished) him well for the future”.

Within 6 months he was given the sugar lump and a further 6 months on he joined the Championship Swans and in his first season he led them intae the Premier League.

He won the Premier Manager of the Month for January 2012 and then the following month signed a 3 ½ year contract. Within 4 months he had bailed oot for Anfield replacing Kenny.

We all know how that ended up and until we came along he was unemployable.

IMHO with his track record including bailing oot on us Leicester is as big as it gets for him. He also claimed after the invincible season that he almost had a heart attack so much was the stress, it looks as if he’s no really cut out for the “big bhoys” like us.

Some on here and other sites when mentioning future managers say that managers talk all the time and none will want tae come to us under present conditions.

Well so do CEOs, Directors and millionaires so it cuts both ways.

    ========

Good point – I think we could if we really wanted to, particularly in terms of product advertising (i.e., highlighting an upcoming game on Sky).

Nothing to stop the term being used if not in commercial terms – i.e., general reporting.

I think the dual registration would therefore stop The Rangers using the term for marketting purposes, unless done with Celtic’s approval. So – for instance – The Rangers marketting a Glasgow derby between us and them alomng the lines “Buy your ticket for the next Old Firm game” couldn’t happen without Celtic’s say-so.

The absolute hubris of the lead post is reflective in the arrogance and complacency of the club and the board which has tricked down to the playing squad.

Gerrard may have had a poor season leading up to this one, but he is and was a new manager on a steep learning curve. Lessons have clearly been learned and improvements made.

I do not know if Rangers improvement has been due to Gerrard directly or the backroom team as a whole but really, it’s irrelevant. Gerrard could be a rubbish coach, a rubbish manager, but he’s been good enough to put together a backroom team that’s got a group on players over achieving.

Our or your whole argument is that if Celtic wouldn’t have been so poor Rangers would have bottled it. There’s no real logic or proof of that.

Rangers have barely conceded a goal never mind dropped points, they won’t likely have another season as good as this but under Gerrard there is a more than decent chance they’ll equal the invincibles season, at least in terms of the league. They’re also doing far better in Europe than we have in recent memory.

We on the other hand are an absolute shambles. The club has went backwards, there is nowhere near enough professionalism behind the scenes never mind cutting edge thinking or elite coaching.

I can’t believe the rubbish that’s being pushed here.

  16. Tuesday 10th March 1981

It has been a fairly normal day in my present circumstances. My weight is 59. 3 kgs. and I have no medical problems. I have seen some birthday greetings from relatives and friends in yesterday’s paper which I got today. Also I received a bag of toiletries today.

There is no priest in tonight, but the chief medical officer dropped in, took my pulse, and left. I suppose that makes him feel pretty important.

From what I have read in the newspapers I am becoming increasingly worried and wary of the fact that there could quite well be an attempt at a later date to pull the carpet from under our feet and undermine us — if not defeat this hunger-strike — with the concession bid in the form of ‘our own clothes as a right’.

This, of course, would solve nothing. But if allowed birth could, with the voice of the Catholic hierarchy, seriously damage our position. It is my opinion that under no circumstances do they wish to see the prisoners gain political status, or facilities that resemble, or afford us with the contents of, political status.

The reasons for this are many and varied, primarily motivated by the wish to see the revolutionary struggle of the people brought to an end. The criminalisation of Republican prisoners would help to furnish this end.

It is the declared wish of these people to see humane and better conditions in these Blocks. But the issue at stake is not ‘humanitarian’, nor about better or improved living conditions. It is purely political and only a political solution will solve it. This in no way makes us prisoners elite nor do we (nor have we at any time) purport to be elite.

We wish to be treated ‘not as ordinary prisoners’ for we are not criminals. We admit no crime unless, that is, the love of one’s people and country is a crime.

Would Englishmen allow Germans to occupy their nation or Frenchmen allow Dutchmen to do likewise? We Republican prisoners understand better than anyone the plight of all prisoners who are deprived of their liberty. We do not deny ordinary prisoners the benefit of anything that we gain that may improve and make easier their plight. Indeed, in the past, all prisoners have gained from the resistance of Republican jail struggles.

I recall the Fenians and Tom Clarke, who indeed were most instrumental in highlighting by their unflinching resistance the ‘terrible silent system’ in the Victorian period in English prisons. In every decade there has been ample evidence of such gains to all prisoners due to Republican prisoners’ resistance.

Unfortunately, the years, the decades, and centuries, have not seen an end to Republican resistance in English hell-holes, because the struggle in the prisons goes hand-in-hand with the continuous freedom struggle in Ireland. Many Irishmen have given their lives in pursuit of this freedom and I know that more will, myself included, until such times as that freedom is achieved.

I am still awaiting some sort of move from my cell to an empty wing and total isolation. The last strikers were ten days in the wings with the boys, before they were moved. But then they were on the no-wash protest and in filthy cells. My cell is far from clean but tolerable. The water is always cold. I can’t risk the chance of cold or ‘flu. It is six days since I’ve had a bath, perhaps longer. No matter.

Tomorrow is the eleventh day and there is a long way to go. Someone should write a poem of the tribulations of a hunger-striker. I would like to, but how could I finish it.

Maybe those that WERE Fined and/or Arrested on Sunday SHOULD BE DENIED getting any Vaccines, since they couldnt care less about spreading Covid ?

    HH.

  20. Had a scroll back and didn’t see any mention of Kings interview regarding European football. Was it my imagination or did he take a huge potshot at our recent record holding Scotland back? Understand he is at the wind up but please tell me that was put under the moustache of our billionaire as he normally doesn’t take kindly to having his nose rubbed in it.

  21. I found the letter from the chief constable regarding the QC being appointed by him to look at the policing around the events on Saturday and Sunday at Ibrox and George Square strange, he mentions human rights proportionality and another heading which escapes me, is he defending the police by trying to these laws human right etc to justify their management of these situations , maybe he is saying that the police have no powers to do anything in these situations, maybe he wants a riot act, who knows.

However coppers dancing and getting selfies taken with lockdown breakers give a very strong impression that the police had no intention of policing and were there to enjoy the occasion.

  22. There is no old firm.

In my opinion it would be good if our next game against the huns was cancelled. Preferably by the SG, but I would not rule out Celtic cancelling the fixture due to safety concerns during lockdown.

We would be punished, no doubt of that but the season would be forever tainted.

We are better than the huns, we do not stoop to their standards, therefore if the game does go ahead then I would give them a guard of honour.

Watching the guard of honour would let the full implications of our capitulation this season sink in. I would hope that our players and all culpable parties would hang their heads in shame.

    HH.

  23. On another matter the next game against them should be cancelled. The danger of public disorder and safety is huge and we are heading in a very dangerous direction. There MUST be consequences for what happened at the weekend otherwise they will have got away Scot free to do the same again or worse.

This goes way beyond football now and a line has to be drawn – society cannot be expected to put up with the threat they pose and the power they seem to hold. The obvious fear of upsetting them runs right through football but it cannot be allowed to run through society too. There has to be a sharp punishment and rangers need to be told that they are not doing enough to dial in the hatred and that they need to start guiding that hooligan element, or banning as they know who they are.

Since there recent inception they have been very guilty of stoking this to the point where there is a real chance that games are cancelled – that is some scary shit and gods knows what would happen if there was no Covid and there were fans at the game.

The atmosphere is poisonous and it’s all coming from one direction- they have won their title and completed their “journey” now they need to be told to that the threat and the anger against the outside world needs to go. The relentless statements regarding perceived injustices are deliberate and they are motivated to stir up the hordes and it needs to stop – having said that there have been a lot less this season, I wonder why??

Scottish football has a lot to answer for – the continuity lie, the 55, the relegation lie, the dossier – allowing this propaganda has feed the hordes that they were were somehow mistreated and fuelled the anger and no one had the bottle to they were wrong – it was allowed to fester and grow until now the perception is that they were cheated and not the other way round.

We are certainly not blameless on two fronts – we allowed them to guide the narrative on all the “injustices” and didn’t stamp it out and we have our own small band of neds that would start a fight in an empty room without a care about the damage they do to the club. The difference is our lot is truly a tiny minority and they are most certainly not encouraged and pandered to by the club in fact it is the opposite.

Sorry for the long winded rant but bigotry and violence make my blood boil and that is where we are headed unless government take strong action now and and show there are consequences and show who holds the power.
