Hopes for Arne

310

Arne Engels’ physical stature belies his age.  Still 21, he is already a winner at Celtic and full Belgian international.  21 is the age Callum McGregor was when he made his (scoring) Celtic debut.  Callum was a year older when he first moved into the middle of the park from the wing.  The captain is likely to end his career as the most honoured player is our history, but we needed patience to see him grow into the player he became.

At the same age, Reo Hatate was still at university.  He had made 62 appearances for Kawasaki Frontale (who get an interesting amount of column inches on CQN these days), when he moved to Celtic as a 24-year-old.  Aaron Mooy went below the radar at St Mirren at 21!

Young Reo was studying at 21, we probably saw Aaron at the same age and didn’t notice him, and we watched enough of Callum at this age to know the scale of development between 21 and 24 is enormous.

I like what we’ve seen so far from Arne and have big hopes he will continue to kick on during the season ahead.

  2. Let’s say we are after three players.

One is on holiday and will sign when home ,another has a family emergency and will sign when it’s resolved and a third is still under contract until the end of the month .

Who knows what goes on behind the scenes, why do we need to know everything right away.

A bit of patience , it’s better for your health.

We can’t win everything all the time, stashing millions away every season and selling our best players is unsustainable and nothing is certain in life. Like trying to collect trebles, fate steps in, especially in a head to head. The balance between staying ahead of our rivals involves winning the league, and maintaining a gap, or making it colossal.

‘Buy low players’ are a punt, Maeda verse Ideguchi, Kyogo verse Kobayashi first team starters cost more and have a debatable element of gamble, continually replacing stars with low buys would by the law of averages, come back to bite you. We do not have super visionaries at Celtic with superior to everybody else’s ad infinatum, stars must occasionally be replaced by stars.

Trading blows, with Sevco who every year hoover up flotsam and jetsam journeymen, for their perennial rebuild tests the ‘buy low sell high’ strategy putting it at risk to go wrong as it did in 2023. A football club taking in rising millions that more than cover outgoings, should be seen to buy better, from a better source by and large we’ve did that.

The wage cap as the rated Greg Taylor and his Bosman demonstrated, is firmly in place. It needs to be revised to buy and keep talismanic players in Parkhead. We wanted to sell Nicolas Kuhn for sure, but his easy decision’ needs to be made harder, in line with the way we were, with lifetime servants like Henrik Larsson, Callum McGregor or even Paul McStay.

Going for the 14 from 15 and so on, and so forth.

Ten people, including six children, have been killed in an Israeli air strike while waiting to fill water containers in central Gaza on Sunday, emergency service officials say.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it works to mitigate civilian harm “as much as possible” and “regrets any harm to uninvolved civilians”.

And the world’s leaders watch this and do nothing.

This Israeli government and their supporters are responsible for the rise in anti-semitism around the globe.

It’s genocide, plain and simple genocide.

lets wait and see who else comes in, enhoy your holidays.

  7. The only people who can stop the IDF is the US, Trump is on board with them, he sees business opportunites in the Gaza strip to redevelop as a beach side exclusive resort for the rich and famous, the Palestinians can just move to Egypt or Jordan supposedly to have a better life, I wonder what he would do if California voted to leave the US, it is the 4th biggest economy in the World. The settlers are also ousting and killing Palestinians and taking their lands. Europe the EU UK and all the rest speak occasionally but wont step outof line with the US, we seldom hear about settler violence I wonder why?

  8. Feel strongly we need a bit of muscle and aggression , a Broony if you will. Secondly, we need a Lubo or Modric type as well , a bit of brains.

Off subject I know, but I do enjoy the tennis, but abhor the elitism and rank snobbery at Wimbers, makes me vomit, royal box my arse.

  9. If Brendan Rodgers isn’t signing a new contract, apparently he isn’t getting his wish of having 4 Quality players in this transfer window, so much for his pal Dermot Desmond ,and other Celtic Board Men .

  10. I’m not convinced that we have a sensible ,get able, list of players ,of the quality that Rodgers desires.

We needed cover at left back for a few windows.

We ended up taking Schlupp on loan in the last few hours of the last window.

It’s all very kneejerk at times.

  12. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Last season was a long and draining one.

Team put so much into Champions League.

They were running on fumes in the last ten minutes against Bayern.

Showed at the tail end of the season. Close to a treble but no cigar.

If we get into the Champions League proper this season it will be equally or more punishing.

Brendan has talked about finding solutions .. including resting individual players during the season.

With that in mind, absolutely no point in deploying our strongest 11 in early preseason.

We need everyone gradually getting fit to help carry the season, particularly across October to December.

Celtic will not be firing on all cylinders on 03 August.

    Fine with me.

As long as they are come 19 August.

  15. the truth.

They were founder members of Serie A and once boasted some of Italian football’s most famous names, but now Brescia have been wiped out of existence after a financial crisis.

How did such a historic club fall so far, so quickly? And what happens next?

BBC Sport examines the Lombardy team’s demise and possible immediate revival.

It will be a new club, playing in Serie C, but for fans of Brescia that’s far better than the alternative – nothing.

  20. It is very very sad that so many who are not in anyway anti Jewish are forced to feel even a wee bit like that due to misplaced perceptions of Jewish people = zionists.

What Israel is doing seems and feels like genocide ( a crime created by 2 eminent Jewish legal experts) to so so so many normal people world wide. Yet the media doesn’t touch it. Indeed goes the other way to only highlight anti semitic coms.

Our elected labour and snp government and politicians are worse. I would implore everyone to at least connect with those we elect to speak out about it. Only that way do they stand a chance imo. We know who controls the media.

Thanks for that about Br Dorotheus. I’ll have a word with my cousin who was the Provincial of the Marists and who was born in Parkhead. We share a granny who spent the most of her life in St Michael’s.
