Horse-trading on Euro league, Premiership leaders consolidate

507

I’ve never known so many people to be keen to get to a game involving Motherwell as there are for tomorrow’s encounter at Celtic Park. Most of us haven’t been to a game since the marginally entertaining 3-3 Champions League draw last month.

Motherwell head a pack of six clubs all within three points of each other, with bottom of the table Partick Thistle just one point further behind at the bottom of the table. They are still in touch with fifth-placed Newco Rangers, who the Lanarkshire club could overhaul if results go their way this weekend, but the table is starting to look like a top five and bottom seven fight.

Each of the top four clubs, Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts and St Johnstone, are at home against opposition no higher than 6th place Motherwell, so there’s every chance the leading group will extend their advantage.

You and I have been speaking about a European League since 2004. During that time the remoteness of the possibility has come and gone but it’s back on the agenda, with Copenhagen director, Anders Horsholt talking about the proposed league between Danish, Dutch, Scottish, Belgian, Swedish and Norwegian clubs.

This proposal would be enormously beneficial for all involved, the only thing that’s needed is sufficient will on the part of clubs to make it happen, but even within this group of potential beneficiaries there are sub-interests which could pull focus in different directions.

Celtic’s interests would be best served with access to a European-wide league, replacing domestic weekend leagues. They would be able to compete and grow into one of the world’s biggest clubs in this scenario. The same would be true of the bigger Dutch clubs, less so for the Danish, and even the Belgians.

What we now have for the first time is a consensus that some change needs to happen among the disenfranchised. I’d bite your hand off for a scenario along the lines of what Horsholt discussed, but you have to consider this possibility in context of what’s happening at the moment with the financially elite European clubs.

They too want change. A meritocratic-ally-earned Europe-wide structure replacing domestic leagues falls short of their mooted closed-franchise system, but not by much. And it’s a lot more deliverable.

This is all horse-trading for now, but there’s a lot of money sitting on the table, so change is inevitable.

I am delighted to read this…………

“Mikael is someone I definitely want to keep at the club,” said Rodgers. “I spoke to him on Thursday about that.

He is a player I’ve been really impressed with since I’ve been here.

He’s played a lot of games and has great maturity. Mikael is a wonderful guy for the team and is an international player. He’s 29 and is at the peak of his career.

    He’s been outstanding.

Mikael is the type of player I want to help create and build something. I’m sure he and his representatives will speak to the club and hopefully organise that.”

I am delighted to read this (part 2)…………….

“It’s good to know that big clubs are looking at me,” said Dembele. “But so long as they know I’m a Celtic player. I’m focused on Celtic – I don’t listen too much to what anyone is saying about me.

My job is to get Celtic the best results possible and score as many goals as possible.

Celtic is the best club for me.

Not just for a few years.

For a few years and more. That’s why I came here.

I didn’t come here to stay just for a few years.

I came here for the long term.”

That and the following were red hot on Rossi’s Cafe juke box in Main St Coatbridge then. Del Shannon and Kelly, but a local band whose name escapes me covered it.

*Kelly was very popular doon Dumbartonshire way, first heard it in the La Scala in Dumbarton, it was the flip side of “Two Kinds of Teardrops”. Another flip side that was popular there around that time was “Distant Drums” B side of “Falling” by Roy Orbison which later gave Jim Reeves his only Number1.

I had an acquaintance that went to a Del Shannon concert down St Catherine’s way in the late 70s. As usual the audience were calling out requests, one of those, Kelly, made him stop and question them, he said he had never been asked to sing this and would need help to recall the words, which they duly did. That section of the crowd were Bankies, St. Catherine’s back then was a shipyard town.

One summers evening I was lying on top of my bed listening to Pirate Radio Scotland when the dj read out a request, it was from a girl who lived up Bellsmyre and she wanted to dedicate it to all the girls in 4th year at Notre dame aka Clerkhill in Dumbarton. That song was the B side of “Sloop John B”, “You’re So Good to Me”. Love our B sides down there.

I was just checking the blog before I headed upstairs.

I looked up the CVS online site for contraception and a multi pack of condoms can be bought for less than $1 a unit. I’ve no idea of their efficacy. LOL.

Not a large price to pay even for the least wealthy among us.

Although I’m sure that if I handed over a pack at the counter with my extensive monthly list of heart and kidney medications, the ladies who know me well, would be surprised and a little perplexed. They would probably warn me to look after my dicky ticker. :-)

As I said I’m off to dream of hat tricks for Moussa, Griffiths and Sinclair tomorrow.

  15. It maybe to much to expect KOLO to play 3 games in a week ?

I suspect BR may leave him out today, and save him for the BM and Hun/animals games ?

I got the feeling that young KT will nab a goal today ?

  16. The week before the recent 5-1 hammering of the animals, Warbo took his team to play Linfield . This game he claimed was vital due to the Huns having no games for 2 weeks prior to facing Celtic ?

The Huns scrapped a 7-0 victory.

After the ” match ?” Warbo reiterated his claim, as did SEVERAL Hun players for the next 7 days in the media ” och aye they claimed, the Linfield ” match” was the IDEAL preparation for the upcoming game against Timmy” ???

My question is this, since Newco after facing ICT do not have another game until facing Celtic , 13 days away, will Warbo be consistent and swiftly arrange another IDEAL preparation match v Linfield before facing the Hoops ?

    I do hope so !
