How Celtic lose cups: red cards and penalties

514

I don’t know anyone who was confident Olivier Ntcham would score with his penalty against St Mirren earlier this month.  Our stats have been awful this season.  Ryan Christie scored his only attempt in a comfortable win over Hearts.  Moussa Dembele also scored his solitary attempt, against Alashkert, but Olivier and Scott Sinclair have each missed two, while Leigh Griffiths missed against Motherwell.  Seven out of 12 have been converted.

Those of you who are old enough to remember the last time Celtic did not win a domestic trophy will recall we went out of that particular Scottish Cup semi-final on penalties.

If you were Derek McInnes, you would have spent all week planning for this eventuality.  Hopefully, the point is not lost on Neil Lennon.  Celtic will take the game to Aberdeen, but if the tie is level in the latter stages of the initial 90 minute period, Aberdeen will sit every-deeper and play for penalties – which they will have a decent chance to win.

That reversal in the 2016 Scottish Cup semi-final aside, Celtic have only exited a cup tournament since Neil Lennon’s first tenure as manager after being reduced to 10 men.  Efe Ambrose conceded a penalty and was sent off in the 2016 League Cup semi-final against Ross County, and Craig Gordon was sent off in the 2016 Scottish Cup semi-final against Inverness.  The latter remains an infamous refereeing performance for the failure to award a penalty and red card Inverness’s Josh Meekings for punching a goal-bound header off the line.

Objectively, if Celtic are going to be stopped from collecting a treble treble, it is most likely to happen on Sunday, as a result of either a red card or a penalty kick competition.  We can plan for both.

Expect Aberdeen to wind up whomever they think is vulnerable to some referee attention – I’m looking at you, Scott.  The script has been written on this one.  Do not get drawn in, play the game on our terms, if anyone loses composure, let it be their daft full back (again).

None of us have confidence in our penalty takers, but practice helps (despite luddite beliefs).  Training will be light tomorrow.  It should consist exclusively of penalty kick practice.

  1. Something tells me today will be one of our easier Hampden victories against the sheep. At least 3 goals for the hoops.

  3. If I may be so bold as point out that the real threat to our historic Rebel Treble Treble is complacency and the mind numbing negative football that has seeped back into our game recently especially during the 2nd period, as evidenced in our last 2 games. Last minute goals have saved us of late but as was the case last week we cannot keep riding our luck like this especially in a game of this magnitude – win this game and I am convinced the treble x 3 will be ours. No disrespect to the Diets.

Hopefully we will see much less of the negative possession at all cost football. True we keep possession but this usually entails the ball ending back with our keeper while we struggle to come up with any tactic to break down a resolute defensive system other than punt hopeful balls into a packed pen area knowing we have little in the way of an aerial threat attack wise. Or the pointless passes to our forwards who inevitably have their back towards goal who then only have the option to pass the ball sideways or backwards again. We need to get the opposition defence turned which means having our more skilful players running at defenders, forcing errors, drawing fouls and dare I suggest we try a few shots from outside the box- ya know mix it up a bit.

    Into them Celtic

  7. Safe travels to everyone going to the game today, many of whom will have started their journey early this morning.

I know a lot of Dons fans heading down today, full of hope more than expectation. The hope springs from their idea that “Celtic have been s***e since Lennon came back”. Undefeated, but s***e, eh ?

They think this is their best chance to win a meaningful game against us in years.

Someone will beat us at Hampden, sometime, but i don’t think today is that day.

Would love a big win today, but will settle for getting the job done with no more injuries, and no MIB inspired suspensions for the game which could give us the unprecedented Treble Treble.

  8. National premier cup competition semi final and the only way to see the match is to subscribe to some two bit low grade sports channel.?

How does it come to this?

I quite happily buy a sky sports day pass through now tv when its a big match that I cant access through my Bt sport subscription.

But no way will i be giving my details out to premier sports for monthly collection.

I will be forced like many others to look for dodgy streams on the internet when i would quite happily pay a one off fee through the telly.

What a way for Scottish football to treat its patrons.

  9. Lazydynamite (and anyone else)

I think you can sign up for Premier Sports online and get this month for free

Just cancel it after the match…

    Maybe you could try that?

  10. BHOYLO83

thanks mate but i don’t trust them.

Had too many problems in the past with such ‘free’ deals.

Just don’t think it makes sense for them not to offer a one off day pass or match pass.

They are after your details and money long term.

    ===============

Seem to recall reading that you need a Sky box to receive the Premier Sport broadcast. So a bit of a double whammy – you need a sky subscription and a Premier sports subscription (albeit temporary if cancelled). Again what happens if the final is on Premier Sports, assuming we win today, and you have taken advantage of the months free trial then cancel after todays’ game. Can you re-subscribe in order to watch the final?

  12. LazyD- Premier Sports is Setanta in new clothes, and look how they sold us down the river

  13. Lazydynamite

Fair enough, I’ve got an iptv box so will be watching on Celtic TV

An avenue of revenue i think the club should be exploring as im sure there’s money to be made there for days such as this

  14. Luckily i believe the final will be on council shortbread telly for free….[or free-ish if you discount the illegal £150 charge they force upon you]…

  15. So right about revenue.

If Celtic could somehow ever get free access to sell their own stuff to their huge worldwide fanbase then it would be a gamechanger.

  16. Bbc had yesterday’s semi final so i’m assuming they will show the final

The Premier Sports game will be shown online so no need for a sky box etc.

    Hope that helps

  19. Premier Sports,

You sign up for one month by paing £9.99. This gives you the first month free and the second month is paid for. You can’t sign up for a free month without paying for the second month. They are running a business after all., so, if the final is only on Premier ( i think the BBC will have it too) then you’ll still be within the 2 months you’ve signed up for on 25th May.

Always found cancelling easy and straightforward….so far.

  20. Was looking forward to Celtic match then US masters golf but unfortunately the golf has been moved forward because of weather .By the time the semi final at hampden finishes the leaders will be well into their round.

A great day’s viewing a wee bit spoiled.

But as long as we win it will be worth it.

  22. Ffs we even have a women’s FA cup game on BBC 2 Scotland today.

We have England internationals on STV, an absolute shambles and a disgrace for the SFA to sell our games (cup and internationals) to Sky etc. How are the young footballers of mañana to get to see there idols, unless parents or guardians can afford subscriptions… Sack the whole cheating cabal.

  24. OK Bhoys have decided to give the oul Premier Sports malarkey a try as I really want to see the game without having to rely lagging dodgy stream . Just signed up with the 1st month free option. Obviously will attempt to cancel in a day or so. Will let you all know if there is any hassle involved in cancelling. Admittedly is does all seem a bit too easy?

  25. Hope to bump into some of the good guys at Hampden today .

North Stand C3 area row GG.

Extra time and penalties…..(.sinclair and Ntcham should be last resortfor penalty taking imo).

hopefully i’m wrong as per ….

C’MON YOU BHOYS IN GREEN ;))

ENJOY, where ever you watch the game.

  26. Yes never mind the Premier league or English football in general.

The BBC spend about 10 times more on Womens football than they do on Scottish football.

The people who have run the Scottish game should be ashamed of themselves.

  27. By the way nothing wrong with women’s football, but get our cup games and internationals on cooncil telly as well.

  28. 25th May 2019 Scottish FA Cup Final TV coverage – Premier 1 / BBC One Scotland

So we will be spoiled for choice. I guess it will depend on who are the pundits in the studio when it comes to choosing which channel to watch

  29. I think the whole promotion of womens sport on the bbc is completely over the top.

You rarely even see a panel of pundits on any bbc football show without some female player or former player.

The gender programers are in overdrive.

Women’s football would be all the better for being left alone out of the limelight to organically grow .

    And as a disclaimer….

I am not anti woman.I have three daughters who couldn’t care less about football really.

  30. Reluctantly just subscribed to Premier Sports to access game, seems I get first month free. Sound good to wee me.Will cancel in a few days .

Hopefully now I can watch my beloved Celtic play a great game and win by a barra load.
