How Stein managed big game weeks

1113

I asked Archie Macpherson to speak about Jock Stein at CQN11, to mark the 50th anniversary of Jock’s appointment as Celtic manager, and then stayed quiet as he spoke.  One of the points he made was that Jock would have a news plan ahead of a big game.

Good news would be held back until a few days before the game, giving fans and players a lift, to ensure maximum impact.  Bad news could break at any time, but it would have to fight for column inches.  As an operator, he is still worth studying.  Celtic should plan to dominate this week’s news accordingly.

Apart from that horrible game away to Legia, Ronny Deila has not been to a sell-out Celtic game in a large stadium, and even that was only 30,000.  It’s possible he’s never even played before a large sell-out crowd, so you can be sure he’ll not be short of people telling him what to expect, and how to prepare for Hampden on Sunday.

There are some obvious pitfalls for him to avoid, in particular to ensure his players are not provoked into retaliation, but taking too much advice would be a mistake (will not stop us offering plenty advice).  He’s spent all season playing and preparing one way, anything which gets in the way of this will only put him off his game.  The manager needs to employ a filter this week, tell everyone he’s got the situation covered and get on with the game.

Loving the way recipients of Rangers EBT loans have been asked about an advert dealing with the consequences of their loans, but are not actually asked about the loans themselves. These guys only agree speak on the understanding they are not asked about their loans, none of which are or will be repaid.

I accept that if the loan recipient is being asked about yesterday’s charity match, or some other football game, there’s no place to ask him about his loan, but these guys are regularly commenting on the consequences of their loans, without ever having to deal with the awkward question.

  4. From The Drum…ASA confirms new club claim….

Herald & Times group has defended publication of an advert in the Sunday Herald from a group calling themselves ‘Celtic Supporters’, which claimed footballing rivals Rangers were now a new entity after being placed into liquidation in 2012.

The controversial ad is estimated to have cost around £1,600 to take out and was only accepted after the publisher received the all clear from both Police Scotland and the Advertising Standards Authority.

“As with all commercial customer advertising, Herald & Times group adhere to all legal requirements and guidelines with regard to the suitability & accuracy of the actual adverts we carry in our titles. With regard to the advert placed by a group representing themselves as ‘Celtic Supporters’, we reviewed the initial copy supplied and passed this to the Advertising Standards Authority and our own group lawyers and, as a result rejected the supplied copy on various legal grounds and requested substantial changes and substantive evidence before we would consider for approval for publication.

“On completion of this process, we then submitted final provided artwork and accompanying evidence and received clearance from the Advertising Standards Authority and our own group legal team to ensure compliance on all legal grounds. We then supplied this same copy and took advice from Police Scotland who confirmed they had no concerns as to its publication.’’

Interesting reflection on the art of News Management in the run up to Sunday’s Semi.

FWIW: I believe we’re head and shoulders better than this mob from £1brox.

Unless Sevco want a gubbing, they simply can’t contemplate taking us on in an open contest … no matter what starting 11, style or formation RD chooses.

Short of the entire Celtic side being laid low by a tummy big, Sunday’s opposition simply have no choice but to adopt a siege approach to the game, trying to break up play at every opportunity and reducing the game to an ugly succession of fouls and angry exchanges.

The nice thing for us is, they don’t really have an obvious out ball, or an especially mobile midfield to be able to play a counter-attacking game. Thus, I expect to see fouls sought by and given to them within ‘long, high ball into the box’ range, with resulting attempts to appeal for fouls in and around our penalty box.

We should also expect to witness every dirty trick in the book during the game and for the ref to be ‘tested’ by their players from the get-go; that way, we won’t be disappointed.

Equally, keeping all 11 of our players on the pitch will be critical.

Even against lower league sides, we sometimes struggle to convert a decent proportion of the chances we create (and we don’t always score heavily against packed defences), so we shouldn’t get too downhearted if we see the same pattern emerge in this game.

Should they contrive to get a goal before we do, then I would expect to see the game deteriorate into a wearying succession of fouls every 45 seconds or so.

That said, I expect us to score first.

If we do, then they don’t have the personnel to change their basic game plan, which means we should have ample opportunity to multiply our lead.

So if we could play them on paper, that’s how I’d see the game unfolding.

It’s just a shame we have to play this game on grass, because I think it’s going to turn out to be something of a damp-squib …

Greece is in the state it is in because of a culture of individuals and business NOT pay their due tax – tax evasion has been a way of life for generations – I know I lived and worked in Athens for fourteen years.

To somehow extrapolate another waste of time Neverendum on the back of a Greek backlash at the EU – the only place they had left to go when their debt-shit hit the fan, is fanciful to say the least.

No talk of “Scotland’s Oil” now – eh?, as the price heads towards $30/40 a barrel for the next decade.

  14. Oh, a wee extra for the Sunday Herald. An aunt of mine, who I learned very recently used to go to Celtic Park as a wee girl with my grandfather, bought the paper at my suggestion. Her husband, who isn’t a Celtic supporter, enjoyed the paper so much that he wants to change from a lifetime of the Sunday Mail.

Greece could still do a Rainjurs go into liquidation and say that Ancient Greece owes the money?

  16. Paul Brennan is wise not to provide any ‘oxygen’ to the maximum 600 Celtic fans – I use the term fans very loosely, who were/are the instigators of the Sunday Herald ‘small’ crowd-funding scam.

There has been no universal support on other Celtic blog sites – in fact like me, they have been openly critical and derisive of the pointless and selfish exercise – this is number six in the list of puerile/futile actions. the first five having been staged at UEFA matches, and seen us fined substantially and on the verge of a ban. There was no no CROWD-FUNDING among these individuals to repay the fines paid by Celtic on their behalf.

I wonder if they are indeed the same individuals.

If I had cash I’d be buying oil right now. Historic low on a finite commodity experiencing rising demand.

The low price that commentators talk about for years to come is still in the $70+/barrel. A lot higher than now but still relatively low.

As it stands nobody really predicted the rapid and massive decline, because nobody really knows how to read the moves of OPEC. They could downgrade production any time they like and Brent Crude would rocket. I wouldn’t trust any predictions beyond 1-2 years.
