How Stein managed big game weeks

1113

I asked Archie Macpherson to speak about Jock Stein at CQN11, to mark the 50th anniversary of Jock’s appointment as Celtic manager, and then stayed quiet as he spoke.  One of the points he made was that Jock would have a news plan ahead of a big game.

Good news would be held back until a few days before the game, giving fans and players a lift, to ensure maximum impact.  Bad news could break at any time, but it would have to fight for column inches.  As an operator, he is still worth studying.  Celtic should plan to dominate this week’s news accordingly.

Apart from that horrible game away to Legia, Ronny Deila has not been to a sell-out Celtic game in a large stadium, and even that was only 30,000.  It’s possible he’s never even played before a large sell-out crowd, so you can be sure he’ll not be short of people telling him what to expect, and how to prepare for Hampden on Sunday.

There are some obvious pitfalls for him to avoid, in particular to ensure his players are not provoked into retaliation, but taking too much advice would be a mistake (will not stop us offering plenty advice).  He’s spent all season playing and preparing one way, anything which gets in the way of this will only put him off his game.  The manager needs to employ a filter this week, tell everyone he’s got the situation covered and get on with the game.

Loving the way recipients of Rangers EBT loans have been asked about an advert dealing with the consequences of their loans, but are not actually asked about the loans themselves. These guys only agree speak on the understanding they are not asked about their loans, none of which are or will be repaid.

I accept that if the loan recipient is being asked about yesterday’s charity match, or some other football game, there’s no place to ask him about his loan, but these guys are regularly commenting on the consequences of their loans, without ever having to deal with the awkward question.

  1. Reading through this mornings statement and remembering Green and Whyte, how could anyone seriously say this is the same club?

We should view them as a new entity, but retaining the blind goodwill of supporters desperate for success and willing to cheer on any version of Rangers.

A couple of wins, or signings or perhaps promotion will have them fighting over Season Tickets and jerseys.

He has bought a carcass with a licence to make money and maybe get his Company European exposure.

This guy is a dangerous operator and should not be underestimated.

He operates without morals and perhaps for the good of Scottish football his methods should be scrutinised at an early stage…

He will make money from them, but I fear that he will do that to our detriment.

    Anyway,

  2. I’m stuck here until the 4th, i’m going to listen to it on the website i think.

Do you know if it’s on Bein sports?

If so i might watch it, depending if they have the correct channel on the T.V.

  3. Sunday will be my first visit to Hampden since 1990 when we lost the Scottish Cup to Aberdeen on penalties. That’s 25 long years.

If the game was against Berwick Rangers I would still be there, because a victory represents passage to the League Cup final, the first leg of a possible treble, and another big day out, this time against Aberdeen or Dundee United.

Reminder for all who are interested in history. Seventy years ago Auschwitz-Birkenau was freed. Big day in here, with many important guests in Auschwitz, including those who survived Holocaust.

    Good morning Sir

My visit there will haunt me forever. So strange that you got off the train, went along the road for a few minutes and there it was……..just beside a present day busy road.

To then then step back from the mundane ordinariness of the here and now into the hell of history was beyond strange and beyond disturbing. I felt compelled to look at every inmate photo as I walked along. As though the least I could do was show them that I hadn’t forgotten that they were individual people.

70 years on. And we witness the rise of the fascist voice across Europe again. Ukraine in particular. A nation that provided more than its fair share of camp guards.

  6. Ashley doesn’t need the grief of putting security over Ibrox. If he wants it he’s putting them in the position of running into the ground when they go into admin/liquidation. he’ll just buy it on the cheap.

He’s tied up their main external revenue stream. It seems from RM that crowds will drop again after this move. So their football based income is nowhere near covering expenses. It’s only going one way. Just a pity it didn’t happen before the weekend. The fixture disappearing would have been better all round fro everybody.

  8. Zbyszek,

I visited there as a dizzy 17 year old. Haunting to say the least.

Made even more so by the fact I had just spent a week with a lovely family from Poznan the week before.

  11. What was the point in making a ‘statement’ 3 years after the horse has bolted?

A ‘statement’ that, we are told deals with all the facts concerning all this Rangers/Sevco p#sh but, a ‘statement’ that fails to mention – one – glaring fact…the fact that, the Celtic directors did – hee-haw – when the huns were granted a licence by the SFA to enter at ‘any’ level of football?….Collusion?…Kow-towing?…Deceit?…Cowardice?…Dereliction of duty?

Ye see…this ‘statement’ conveniently/lazily…over looks the fact that…not one, but two…glaring opperchancities arose to…spell out to the world, exactly what is going on in the Scottish footballing world by, calling a ‘national’ media conference to, enlighten the unaware members of the public.

    1. When the ‘shame-game’ stuff kicked-off…Celtic were summoned to a Govt-Summit coz…they had ‘3’ players booked in the so called ‘shame-game’ and, our cowardly, kow-towing ‘bored’ took their place at the back of the Old Firm bus…on your behalf…a shambles of an ad-hoc…kangaroo-court which ended up with the Celtic manager blamed for the lot! The directors that you pay, so well fought yer corner well there, eh?

    2. When the huns were granted a licence which – imho – was conjured up on the basis of, avoiding civil-unrest. FLUCK civil-unrest!

The huns were given a licence – so that they could do it all over again coz – NOBODY – will show the requisite cojones to do the deed!

The deed will not be done to the huns until…there’s a Celtic Football Club…run by, rebellious, uppitty-Tims…who don’t kow-tow!

All this hun-nonsense will not be resolved until…Celtic supporters realize that, they’re being – DONE – in their own tent.

Get rid of the dirty-deedsters…or, continue to sit at the back of the Old Firm bus.

As it happens often, Russia make their propaganda.

    1. It was Polish government who sent reminder to every ambassador, asking question – who would be representing his country in Auschwitz?

    2. Russia answered it was going to be Minister of Culture and Deputy Prime Minister.

    3. It was World Jewish Centre together with World Jewish Historical Centre (some of them are Polish Jews living here) who sent personal invitations – in accordance to answers from the Ambassadors.

I know that Russian official press called the Poles bastards for not inviting Putin. No surprise there. The truth is, not one was invited by Polish government. It’s Auschwitz victims who speak first and laud first, not Putting. You would think it’s Putin and Russia who are come to your mind when you ask question who the victims of Auschwitz?

For anyone who ever doubted Alex Rae wasnt the sharpest tool in the box….

Alex Rae, who won the league with the club in 2006, said: “Listen, that’s just provoking things. If that’s what they get their kicks from on the day, maybe it will take away from their performance. Good luck to them.

“Rangers, over the years, have tried to conduct themselves in the right manner, with a bit of dignity, so it’s not important what they do. What is important is how we conduct ourselves.”
