How Stein managed big game weeks

1113

I asked Archie Macpherson to speak about Jock Stein at CQN11, to mark the 50th anniversary of Jock’s appointment as Celtic manager, and then stayed quiet as he spoke.  One of the points he made was that Jock would have a news plan ahead of a big game.

Good news would be held back until a few days before the game, giving fans and players a lift, to ensure maximum impact.  Bad news could break at any time, but it would have to fight for column inches.  As an operator, he is still worth studying.  Celtic should plan to dominate this week’s news accordingly.

Apart from that horrible game away to Legia, Ronny Deila has not been to a sell-out Celtic game in a large stadium, and even that was only 30,000.  It’s possible he’s never even played before a large sell-out crowd, so you can be sure he’ll not be short of people telling him what to expect, and how to prepare for Hampden on Sunday.

There are some obvious pitfalls for him to avoid, in particular to ensure his players are not provoked into retaliation, but taking too much advice would be a mistake (will not stop us offering plenty advice).  He’s spent all season playing and preparing one way, anything which gets in the way of this will only put him off his game.  The manager needs to employ a filter this week, tell everyone he’s got the situation covered and get on with the game.

Loving the way recipients of Rangers EBT loans have been asked about an advert dealing with the consequences of their loans, but are not actually asked about the loans themselves. These guys only agree speak on the understanding they are not asked about their loans, none of which are or will be repaid.

I accept that if the loan recipient is being asked about yesterday’s charity match, or some other football game, there’s no place to ask him about his loan, but these guys are regularly commenting on the consequences of their loans, without ever having to deal with the awkward question.

  3. According to Companies House, there is a ‘The Rangers FC Group Limited’ and a ‘The Rangers Football Club Limited’.

But there’s no ‘The Rangers FC Limited’ as someone has stated they’ve seen on ra deeds.

    From TSFM

The hostility over old club new club isn’t ever going to be resolved. it might , and hopefully will , dissipate over time . however , as someone who has not waded into this , but is trying to understand the position from both sides, maybe I can try and summarise.

From my perspective the Rangers support are perfectly entitled to feel this is the same club. They may , as a support, have been guilty of not questioning the methods employed by David Murray as he forced their club down a road with an inevitable disastrous outcome. However most supporters don’t question success. they don’t want involved in the murky world of football finance, and overwhelmingly most are completely unqualified to comment, or understand what happens below the surface.

So naivety and lack of an MBA could be the ‘crimes’ the Rangers support are guilty of, however the support have also been victims of the actions of David Murray, Alistair Johnston, John McLelland , Dave King, Paul Murray and the rest of the board members who sanctioned the lunatic strategy.

We all like to think we would have acted and spoken out if the boards of our own clubs would have behaved like David Murray’s Rangers. Realistically that wouldn’t have happened in large numbers , as most fans of all clubs aren’t qualified to understand the issues.

So , we should have some sympathy for Rangers fans for being the victim of a horrendous owner like Murray and be careful not to overclaim what “we” would have done differently in similar circumstances.

On the other hand there were other victims of Murray. These were the fans of all the clubs who competed against Rangers under his ownership.

Take a comparison with Celtic , when there was serious financial trouble pre Fergus.

Celtic didn’t liquidate – the club paid every supplier in full

Celtic didn’t borrow money it had no hope of repaying – all bank borrowing have been fully satisfied and are currently completely up to date

Celtic didn’t engage in dodgy and illegal tax schemes – the club fulfilled it’s responsibilities as a leader in the community and complied with the law of the land.

The cost to Celtic, and to just about every other club in Scotland was that we had less money to spend on players than we would have had if we had engaged in tax scams, shafted suppliers, reneged on bank debt and failed to pay PAYE , NI and VAT

When Celtic , and Hibs and Aberdeen and Dundee Utd and St Mirren and most other clubs improved their stadiums , they did it with bank loans they subsequently repaid or through business deals that they honoured.

Maybe Rangers fans could take a moment to pause and think how they would feel if they had lost out in competition to a club who cheated them for decades. Walk a mile in our shoes, and tell us we are wrong to feel anger and resentment.

Not at Rangers fans……..we understand the nature of rivalry. The anger and resentment is aimed at David Murray who cheated for years , at Campbell Ogilvie who’s cowardice and silence allowed Murray to cheat our national sport , and at the media who cravenly fluffed Murray’s ego and point blank refused to question his blatant cheating.

LNS had the opportunity to deliver justice . My belief is that the SPL acted in the same cowardly complicit manner as Ogilvie and started out with the verdict they wanted, and worked backwards to ensure LNS delivered the token slap to the club and totally ignored Murray and Ogilvies role in the cheating of the game.

These are the key issues , much more important than whether a club is new or not. Exposing Murray and Ogilvie is worthy of effort , contribution and financial investment.

Thats a much more significant cause than new club / old club in my view

  5. MO’N…wasnt DD’s puppet…that was evident when he told DD that…he was signing Chris Sutton coz…He(MO’N) was the manager…not DD.

MO’N was the last puppet-less manager Celtic had and…the stadium has been emptying ever since.

MO’N said that Rngers were missed from the top league and…ye know what…I’m thinking…MO’N probably thought…”Why should I fight Celtic FC’s battles when, they’ve a board full of billionaire directors…who dont?”

I did wonder about the potential conflict of interest in Ashley’s board appointees making decisions on behalf of The Rangers in its dealings with Ashley.

Still, I’m sue Big Mike is smart enough to make things look ok.

Purely from the business perspective, Ashley’s most recent move in the game is really rather interesting.

I’d be rather surprised if the terms of the loan do not explicitly state that the floating charge crystallises on default of repayment terms. (When a floating charge crystallises, it becomes ‘fixed’ to specific assets).

I’d also be surprised if the loan wasn’t payable on demand.

In this light, we need to consider the effect of the loan on cash:

    Cash in: £5M Loan

    Cash in: £1.6M RRL dividend

Cash out: £3M, Repayment of earlier loan

Cash out: £1.6M, Settlement of onerous leases

    Net cash +£1.4M

Given that expenses in January inc payroll will come to some £2.5M, one might consider matters to be somewhat unresolved. Fluid even.

Which bring into play any further terms attached to the second £5M tranche, which transparently is needed to cover the balance of Jan and Feb costs.

The EGM – presumably – will be called in March, at which point the current loans will be spent, and the cupboard bare.

In the meantime, no one has flagged the significance of the increased shareholding in RRL. Mash now owns 75% of the equity in the company, meaning he can utilise special resolutions for his own purposes if he pleases.

For example, a resolution to increase the capital in the company… which would serve to dilute RIFC’s holding unless RIFC has the cash to play the game. Which patently they do not.

Fixed charge on the Intellectual Properties

Majority shareholding in the merchandising business

    Rights to shirt sponsorship

Plus fixed charges on all heritable properties bar the stadium, over which a floating charge that crystallises on default of a loan they can’t pay back.

In the even that the 3 bears prevail at the EGM, in order to stave off the threat of the charge crystallising, they’re going to have to sink a whole lot of cash into repaying the loans, then funding the cash shortfall March onwards. That’s minimum £20M just to see the business through to the next season ticket cycle in June.

Then of course, they can think about new capital to support their new plan for the business, which can’t include very much in the way of income from the merchandising side now, can it.

Can you see what it is yet?

Apols for mistake in the arithmetic. I double checked the numbers, made an alteration, and neglected to square the bottom line.

Net cash of course is +£2M, which may cover off most of January’s liabilities.

    For what it’s worth.

  13. TBB – the question King and the 3 bears will now be asking is “do we really want to win an EGM?”

So,in essence, you also can see no way out for a loss-making business which has hived off its income stream in order to cover short-term liabilities?

Well, well. I wonder how our investigative journalists will view that.

    ===========================================

    Livibhoy,

The post which ” the long wait is over” showed you looks like mine from a few years back.

I have stayed in both The Monte Carlo and 1898 the latter being the best equipped, the comments I made re places to eat remain good as I was in Quinze Nits when Celtic played there last and it is still excellent and located in Placa Reile on the left on the way down the Rambla, around the entrance there are 3 pubs who show our games.

You will see this Square on some adverts on TV with the guy juggling the ball.

Places to visit are numerous but in my view, and I have been visiting it since 1974 any time we are in Barcelona or a nearby Costa,is THE SAGRADA FAMILIA now considered as a modern wonder of the World.

Q’s will be huge so book online as there is a separate entrance for online bookings and you get in very quickly.( Remember and tell the Japanese tourists to get the hats off )

Gaudi buildings on Passage La gracia now open past few years to public for first time since Franco.

Get the underground for Montjuic and the Finicular railway to the top from there you can get a cable car across the Harbour to the other side, well worth the visit and great photo opportunities.

Nou Camp good but a bit far out.

    Have a nice time.

Reading the comments about MA’s deal, while having some breakfast.

Also, noticed this in the reporting from BBC

“In return, Ashley gets security over the Scottish Championship club’s Murray Park training ground, registered trademarks and other properties”

Sounds like MA has, in effect, bought their crests again …. if they default, they will have to pay him to wear ‘ra famous blue jersey’.

  19. Brilliant.

    Cheers mate.

Want to try and make this trip a bit special. My Mrs looks after me and the Bhoy 365 days a year. This is her trip so want to make it memorable.

They’ll just invent a new crest and say it’s still the original.

  21. TBB, RogueLeader – looking back at the RIFC shareprice. King and the 3 Bears probably could have taken control of the club for around £7-10m buying shares on the market. Sarver gets involved, MA makes his moves it’s now at least double that.

My conclusion. They never had the money, nor fast access to it. They were depending on fan backing and MA getting scared by income drops. He’s showing them that he doesn’t care he just wants what he wants.

  22. TBB – Rather than sitting with lawyers trying to work out ways to neutralise this Ashley move he is probably trying to work out the best way to get out whilst saving as much of his glib and shameless wee face that he can.

No, he is showing them he isn’t letting them have what they want. Subtle but important difference that all this mob have failed to spot when dealing with somebody like Ashley.
