Monday’s win over Dundee gave an insight into the acclimatisation required for new players to settle into a team. Focus in this regard often goes on new living arrangements, the language and social aspects of being remote from your friends and family, but pragmatic aspects are just as important.
When to make a run, what it means when a team-mate does a specific action, where a player is most effective at receiving a ball are all things you learn in the heat of battle. We had two new forwards on the field on Monday, but this issue is more important for defenders, who are in danger if they do not know what the plan is when pressed in possession.
I am sure Martin O’Neill wants signings in as soon as possible, but for me, retaining the current squad until after the trip to Austria is more important. Celtic never looked back last season after the return from injury of Arne Engels and Alastair Johnston. They brought the energy and structure we missed for much of the campaign.
Monday looked rusty. The fastest way to change that is to work on fitness and process, without exit distractions.

Jock played what was called 4-2-4 at the time. Bobby Murdoch was the right sided mid, with more defensive duties than wee Bertie on the left. He always used two wingers, Jinky on the right and Bobby Lennox or Big Yogi on the left.
Jackiemac, wee Jimmy may have been quieter in the second half but he terrorised them during the first 45.

Something like 14 out and 2 in.
If we concentrate on 3 of the outs (Maeda, Sarrachi and Iheanacho) I’ve looked at their late season performance. All 3 were fairly important in the run in

One player rating had them first, fourth and eighth rated (this was based on 2 decimal point scoring, with an end to end list)
One rating had them joint first, joint second and joint third
One player rating had them joint first, joint second and joint fourth
The latter two being simple scores out of 10, with far more joint places.
It is my belief that we have lost both quantity and quality. We would appear to be weaker than we finished last season. This is despite assurances around previous mistakes and that lessons had been learned. This is concerning and needs to be addressed promptly.

The cynic in me could be persuaded that these events are intentional.

Our squad of fringe players was far too big and needed trimmed down.
Quality beats quantity in every comparison.
We need a nucleus of regular first team players with appropriate back up. Not ” hundreds” of bit part players the fans could never really relate to.

Firstly, I hope Martin gets back to full health and continues to lead this, at the moment, understrength squad of players hopefully to more success. Things could possibly improve before the transfer window closes although it is looking bleak just now. We really don’t know what is going on behind the scenes and this is probably the reason for the bafflement and despair among the support…and it also makes our CEO and Chairman, reputedly real Celtic men, come across as weaklings, afraid to stand up to Dermot Desmond. What a come down from the moment when Ange and Dominic McKay sat before the cameras, giving us a great feeling of change, modernisation, enthusiasm and confidence.
Alas, what will be, will be for this season. Perhaps Dermot’s plan is for Martin to finish his shift and the reins to be handed over to Keiran McKenna next season. Regardless, my thoughts at the moment are for Martin.

“Horkaš is a player for Las Palmas who has asked the club to let him leave. The club won’t let him go because the only offer we have [from Celtic] isn’t attractive,” he said.

Julián Araujo has undergone successful surgery on his left thigh after sustaining a muscle injury on the club’s pre-season tour in Austria.
He will be supported by the club’s medical department as he navigates a period of rehabilitation.
All at the club extend their best wishes to Julian and look forward to him making a full recovery.

Dembele threw the toys out the pram in 2018 but when he came back after injury vs AIK he changed the game. Still happy to play. Maeda was unhappy last year but didn’t try to miss sitters.
The risk of the unhappy player is much less than the risk of selling talent pre qualifiers.
