Howe and premature news

265

I read a lot of confidence that the appointment of Eddie Howe is a done deal, all a matter of getting Bournemouth’s play-off games out of the way to allow the appointment of his backroom staff.  If only the world worked this way.

Managerial appointments have commercial consequences.  If Celtic had a manager contracted, the stock market would be informed at an early opportunity.  Negotiations are no one else’s business but it is inappropriate to keep commercially sensitive information like this from the market.

Eddie may have shaken hands, spent an hour with the media team for a planned reveal, but a contract?  Sorry.  You will know very soon after that is signed.  Until then, it is a draft document.

It also makes no sense waiting on the availability of backroom staff before announcing the manager, who could easily tell the media, “I’m working on the backroom team and will let you know when there is news.”

His former Bournemouth assistants will either join him in his next job, stay where they are, or go elsewhere.  Eddie will take another job, with or without them.  This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.

There is also the dirty little subject.  Imagine for a moment the pressure inside every business unit at Celtic Park.  The finance team will have nervous twitches looking at statements and forecasts.  Those in the retail department will be battering their F5 keys and calling everyone in the business hoping for information.  Ticketing have their busiest two month’s work to cram into an ever-decreasing window.  The Foundation and the many who depend on it for support and assistance – jeez – they need our help more than anyone.  “Just.  Do.  It.” will be the message from every department head.

An entire enterprise is waiting on one statement to allow it to trade normally.  Do you really think Celtic are so chilled about money would sit on news that forgoes this cash?  Really?

You and I have seen a lot of the football business.  We know that if a talent is good enough, he is incentivised to keep his options open until the last possible moment.  This scenario, I buy.  Anyway, have a nice Thursday!

Hi pal. Yup – he’s just finished his first year at Strathclyde – all classes and studying done online. I’ve been really impressed to be honest – he’s attacked it as a 9-5 job every day without fail. Passed everything so far (final two results still to come in). Looking forward to first legal (not actual) pub visit this weekend since he turned 18 last November.

  5. Morning all

After a dreich day yesterday the sun is out in a cloudless sky…a nice thing

unless you’re a Celtic fan waiting for white smoke on the horizon.

The delay in appointing a manager in good time to get his feet under the desk & his bibs & cones out clearly has a reason.

It’s not unreasonable to speculate that this is because we are waiting on some aspect of the chosen one’s situation to resolve itself.

    – Is it Eddie Howe & the EPL possibilities or Bournemouth’s play off fortunes?

    – Is it Steve Clarke & the summer internationals?

    – Is it Jack Ross & the Scottish Cup final?

    – Is it another candidate altogether?

I’d like to assume that we have been diligently seeking to recruit a replacement management team in the weeks since NFL left, and that we have at least tentatively agreed terms.

Ideally, we’d want his replacement in as son as possible to avoid the usual close season mess of failing to prep for the CL qualies. The sheer fact that we haven’t done that SHOULD mean that the chosen one is worth the wait, and further, he has hopefully been involved behind the scenes already – in a non remunerative way obviously.

Since our ideal recruit is not in pace within the desired time frame, we’re all left hoping or assuming that

    a) we have someone lined up

    b) we are not going into the close season still searching for a manager

    c) the chosen recruit or Celtic have sound reasons for him not being announced at this time

    d) he has at least had some discussion about player retention/sales & even what our player needs are

It will take an enormous effort, even by the best of managers, to navigate this close season so that Celtic are in the right frame of mind to tackle Champions League Qualies when he is only officially in place on June 1.

He’ll need all the help he can get & must have his own choice of assistants & backroom staff, so finding jobs for current members of staff out of a misguided sense of loyalty cannot happen. If the person meets the criteria & wants the job – fine, but otherwise not.

In between finishing 14th and 12th

Their championship win was so unlikely given their status that it’s still talked about as being the sporting story of the century. Well, by sky at least. Odds of 5000-1

  7. How many EPL managers are paid more than Rodgers? Probably just Man City, Liverpool, Everton and Chelsea. Oh, and maybe big Sam at West Brom, if you include….ahem…….benefits and bonuses.

  8. John Kennedy been seen out looking at bigger houses after impressing the rugger man.

  9. My take on the Howe situation.

I don’t know and nobody knows out with those that do need to know why it has taken so long. From what I hear Eddie Howe has been offered the job, if he wants it is on his terms.

It has been reported that an announcement will be made tomorrow, with the official unveiling on Monday. From what I hear, the real possibility of both of the aforementioned taking place. Personally, not so sure about tomorrow but I believe if Eddie Howe is to be our manager, which I hear and have no reason to doubt it, we will see him appointed, unless something puts a spanner in the wheels.

I base my reasons on what I hear. However, as we all know any deal can be trumped at the eleventh hour, I do not believe it will be, trumped.

    Keep the Faith!

Up to now, I personally think Howe’s body of work is far more impressive than Parker’s. Not saying Scott Parker is a bad manager but yo-yo-ing with Fulham shouldn’t be enough to get you the Spurs job.

I disagree, statistically that year’s success is an anomaly, the 5 years in the championship is far more indicative of their status, or their average league position over a ten year period.

While it may have been an anomaly it created a new footing for the club.

I do not think BR would have signed for Brighton or WBA or Fulham, but Everton or Leicester or West Ham are 2nd category clubs after the top 6.

Your comments make it seem as it is somehow a failure if a celtic manager is not considered for the top 6 in England. Its clearly not.

These clubs take the best managers in the world or, outside of that, ex players (Ole, Lampard etc).

The fact BR could not leave Celtic and immediately get a top gig is perfectly fine. In fact, I’d love for us to hire another manager who would be good enough to get poached for £9m by a mid table EPL club; but we will have to pay him well.

Do we do that or go for the cheap option again? Unlike during most of the 9IAR run, season tickets are on the line now.

  21. timmy7_noted on

Regardless of all the speculation on who it may be there is one thing I think we can all be sure about. The modern, professional, search and selection process we had all hoped to see this time around is not happening.

How could Sevco sign a guy on a pre-contract contract before the season even ended but yet each of our targets are ‘keeping their options open.

Sevco played v Barisic and signed him a couple of days later. Amazing that he wasn’t keeping his options either.

I actually was in a really good mood last night. Celtic had given Broony a reasonably good send off and Eddie was supposedly appointed. Now Paul tells us that we are actually being taken for a ride. Very disheartening.

  30. Rolling Stone – the huns, in my opinion, have a much more proactive way of doing business than us. They go out and get their target(s) with little fuss.

That has been the case for decades.

They spend what is required to get their target (I know, I know, but they are skint, cheating . . .)

They wanted Gerard, they had to offer BR-type money to get him. We would have baulked at half that for a rookie. He’s delivered in spades.

If they wanted Howe, I expect they would have offered him whatever he thinks he is worth. They have enough people willing to keep buying confetti shares now that big money is on the horizon. They don’t give two monkeys about FFP.

I fear after our generation of living it large (over them), it is back to business as usual. The “Celtic will not be held to ransom approach” will see us playing catch up for years to come.

He has the level of coaching and squad management that we have been lacking for nearly 3 years.

If he is stalling then we need to have other alternatives ready and waiting.
