Howe and premature news

265

I read a lot of confidence that the appointment of Eddie Howe is a done deal, all a matter of getting Bournemouth’s play-off games out of the way to allow the appointment of his backroom staff.  If only the world worked this way.

Managerial appointments have commercial consequences.  If Celtic had a manager contracted, the stock market would be informed at an early opportunity.  Negotiations are no one else’s business but it is inappropriate to keep commercially sensitive information like this from the market.

Eddie may have shaken hands, spent an hour with the media team for a planned reveal, but a contract?  Sorry.  You will know very soon after that is signed.  Until then, it is a draft document.

It also makes no sense waiting on the availability of backroom staff before announcing the manager, who could easily tell the media, “I’m working on the backroom team and will let you know when there is news.”

His former Bournemouth assistants will either join him in his next job, stay where they are, or go elsewhere.  Eddie will take another job, with or without them.  This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.

There is also the dirty little subject.  Imagine for a moment the pressure inside every business unit at Celtic Park.  The finance team will have nervous twitches looking at statements and forecasts.  Those in the retail department will be battering their F5 keys and calling everyone in the business hoping for information.  Ticketing have their busiest two month’s work to cram into an ever-decreasing window.  The Foundation and the many who depend on it for support and assistance – jeez – they need our help more than anyone.  “Just.  Do.  It.” will be the message from every department head.

An entire enterprise is waiting on one statement to allow it to trade normally.  Do you really think Celtic are so chilled about money would sit on news that forgoes this cash?  Really?

You and I have seen a lot of the football business.  We know that if a talent is good enough, he is incentivised to keep his options open until the last possible moment.  This scenario, I buy.  Anyway, have a nice Thursday!

  1. Rock Tree Bhoy on

The Eddie Howe video has dropped off the front page – and todays article then pours cold water on the announcement yesterday from Talksport – co-incidence?

Remember Shaun Maloney being asked – maybe about a month ago – if he would be involved in any way with our new management team,

his answer was along the lines of – thats an impossible question to answer,

why not just say No? Or something like – its highly unlikely

so following on from Paul dropping the Eddie Howe video from his lead page…

it could be we are waiting on Roberto Martinez – and Shaun

Talksport – no lovers of Celtic – could easily be leading us all up the garden path,

and if they were to unveil Martinez and Maloney – how many of us would complain?

    just a thought…..

Martinez and Maloney? Would be an outstanding pair of appointments..

  3. Madmitch – I should have clarified, from THEIR perspective, for their outlay, he has delivered in spades. From a team that was a laughing stock to us, he has overseen a transformation in domestic and European performances and results.

Our pathetic capitulation helped, along with the bent refs, SPFL and SFA, but I think their last two European campaigns have been a clear enough signal that they have moved up more than a notch or two from when he and his staff came in.

  4. Martinet and Maloney would be my number one choice but I think they’ll have their pick of clubs in the summer. If howe isn’t committing yet then no way are M &M before their teams last kick off a Euro ball. I’m not sure some of our supporters patience would tolerate that!

Still, I think they’d be worth the wait.

  5. Here’s a thought. Lenny had got two decent CBs and a full back in the summer. We had managed to take more chances. We had managed to win the league or at least still be competing for it now. In short lenny saw the season out. I think we all thought changecwas coming this summer anyway. Would we be in any different of a position than we are now? Devil’s advocate here but I don’t think we are any worse off than in a more normal management transition period. The board are still incompetent tory bassas all the same.

  6. ROCK TREE BHOY – Martinez renewed his Belgian contract to see him through the 2022 World Cup which he believes they have a decent chance at.

He, in my opinion, is not chucking that to come to us. No chance. Maloney? Maybe. Sure Martinez could replace him without much trouble.

  7. Further to my comment on Martinez, this was in May 2020:

Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez says he wants to leave “a beautiful legacy” after extending his contract until after the 2022 World Cup.

The Spaniard, 46, took over in 2016 and his existing deal was set to run out this summer after Euro 2020.

The tournament has been moved to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, with the next World Cup taking place in Qatar in November and December 2022.

“I am very happy because this is a very ambitious project, said Martinez.

“I feel everything is in place to work towards a beautiful legacy in Belgian football.”

Belgium finished third at the 2018 World Cup in Russia under former Everton, Swansea and Wigan manager Martinez.

The Red Devils are top of the current Fifa world rankings and won all 10 of their games in qualifying for Euro 2020.

They have been drawn in Group B for the tournament alongside Denmark, Finland and Russia.

“The postponement of the Euros brings a completely different situation,” added Martinez.

“I believe immensely in this group of players. I feel that it wasn’t the time to break that relationship, so it’s time to look forward to a very intense international period.”

It continues the total contempt shown by both Government and Governing bodies towards football fans in the last 12 months.

The reasoning here is laughable. 2m distancing required rather than 1.5m at Euro’s.

Hampden holds 52,000, by my reckoning the paltry 2000 allegedly requested, could be accommodated in a worst case scenario by utilising 1 in every 25 seats. are we seriously saying that doesn’t enable 2m distancing?

Also the 600 limit is allowed as of Monday regardless of venue, so 600 fans in say Glebe Park Brechin, by the hedge is assessed as the same risk as 600 fans in a 52,000 capacity Hampden.

Not much better on a European level. They announce CL final will be in Porto, fans quickly book flights while they are affordable then the detail comes out. Fan’s have to arrive and depart in the same day, on charter flights arranged by the clubs. Herded into fan zones to stadium then back to Airport.

My take on the Howe situation.

I don’t know and nobody knows out with those that do need to know why it has taken so long. From what I hear Eddie Howe has been offered the job, if he wants it is on his terms.

It has been reported that an announcement will be made tomorrow, with the official unveiling on Monday. From what I hear, the real possibility of both of the aforementioned taking place. Personally, not so sure about tomorrow but I believe if Eddie Howe is to be our manager, which I hear and have no reason to doubt it, we will see him appointed, unless something puts a spanner in the wheels.

I base my reasons on what I hear. However, as we all know any deal can be trumped at the eleventh hour, I do not believe it will be, trumped.

Think you’ll find that the guy in the dugout beside him is the brains of the outfit.

From what I recall Gerraaaard didn’t have a coaching qualification when he was appointed and needed the other guy whose name escapes me. Not social convener McAllister.

  22. I was going to say that it can’t be Eddie because there isn’t a justifiable reason for such a long delay, but then again, what is up with the Fergal Harkin appointment? Weird!

  23. Thanks, Lennybhoy. You are usually on the money.

Personally, I would have preferred Martinez and Maloney and have had hopes of that since Maloney was asked about it on Sportscene. Howe, however, is a fine alternative.

If it is true that Celtic have been advised to close the shop on Saturday, I feel we should demand that the Scottish Government order the Police to make sure there are no marches of the deid team’s supporters. Precedent would suggest that is highly unlikely, especially as the powers that be in Ibrox haven’t told their hordes not to do so. I gather they are miffed that there may be a march to protest about Palestine on Sunday.

No issues with McKay’s experience etc on commercial and PR/comms, however he is (will be 😉) the CE of the whole shebang, and imo it is a DOF who should oversee the football operations, working to a set budget and autonomous from, although accountable – against his objectives – to the CE/Board.

I don’t think we are far apart (if at all) on this. Will be down to the extent to which the CEO lets the Directors get on with delivering success in their areas of responsibility.

The thorny question of what constitutes success is the nub of the matter – with Pedro it seems the credo of fiscal balance was absolute – managed through very low-risk (he thought) tactics.

The problem is that the low risk tactics have turned out to actually be the opposite – IF developing and improving Celtic Football Club was the key strategic objective.

Which – to be clear – I do NOT think it was (as evidenced by the annual failure to adequately equip ourselves to compete in the European qualifers).

  28. Re : Beale.

Agree that Gerrard will always want Beale with him. However, it may not be as simple as that. Beale is on record as saying he would like to manage in his own right. Beale will also know better than anyone if Gerrard is quick on the uptake tactically, or as thick as clotted cream. If, for example, Gerrard were to go to Liverpool but “do a Lampard” he could always carve out a career as a pundit . If Beale was with him he won’t have such options and could be left coaching youngsters at Liverpool or elsewhere for the rest of his career.

I wouldn’t rule out Sevco offering the job to Beale in the event Gerrard were to leave . At that stage Gerrard would need to be confident (as would his future employer) that he is a manager in his own right, and not simply a figurehead. Maybe I’m doing Gerrard a disservice but i do think he is very reliant on Beale and without him could be exposed.
