Howe and premature news

265

I read a lot of confidence that the appointment of Eddie Howe is a done deal, all a matter of getting Bournemouth’s play-off games out of the way to allow the appointment of his backroom staff.  If only the world worked this way.

Managerial appointments have commercial consequences.  If Celtic had a manager contracted, the stock market would be informed at an early opportunity.  Negotiations are no one else’s business but it is inappropriate to keep commercially sensitive information like this from the market.

Eddie may have shaken hands, spent an hour with the media team for a planned reveal, but a contract?  Sorry.  You will know very soon after that is signed.  Until then, it is a draft document.

It also makes no sense waiting on the availability of backroom staff before announcing the manager, who could easily tell the media, “I’m working on the backroom team and will let you know when there is news.”

His former Bournemouth assistants will either join him in his next job, stay where they are, or go elsewhere.  Eddie will take another job, with or without them.  This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.

There is also the dirty little subject.  Imagine for a moment the pressure inside every business unit at Celtic Park.  The finance team will have nervous twitches looking at statements and forecasts.  Those in the retail department will be battering their F5 keys and calling everyone in the business hoping for information.  Ticketing have their busiest two month’s work to cram into an ever-decreasing window.  The Foundation and the many who depend on it for support and assistance – jeez – they need our help more than anyone.  “Just.  Do.  It.” will be the message from every department head.

An entire enterprise is waiting on one statement to allow it to trade normally.  Do you really think Celtic are so chilled about money would sit on news that forgoes this cash?  Really?

You and I have seen a lot of the football business.  We know that if a talent is good enough, he is incentivised to keep his options open until the last possible moment.  This scenario, I buy.  Anyway, have a nice Thursday!

    Deniabhoy….horrible news….here’s hoping 9 months is a conservative figure

Sorry to hear that about your friend. Cancer has taken people close to me and it’s just awful.

  3. Pay cuts — can of worms regarding the squad.

Most will just want what it says on their contracts.

Board leadership — something should have been worked up.

Anyone on above twice the average wage — £52 / 55K.

Anything above that figure — 20% reduction on the marginal amount.

To be made up with stock options sometime in the future?

Might have generated some leverage on the squad to take a temporary pay cut.

Pay the money back to the support as a temp season ticket discount for 2021/22?

Enough effort and will — something could have been worked up.

    20% discount this season = £5mill.

We wasted twice as much with PL’s desperado signings this season.

I have seen the letter from Tracey Moore offering rebates on corporate hospitality season tickets, I can’t divulge any further than that

    David 17

Faithful through and through but only when we get the results we want. That’s arrogant.

I will try harder I promise David to be a better more committed Celtic supporter like you

  6. Please correct me, if I am wrong on this. When Brendan Rodgers was appointed, I seem to remember his appointment was announced only after the season finished; and it was intimated that he had already been working on things for a number of weeks, doing his ‘homework’ on the players, using videos of our games etc. There was then undivided attention on him, and a huge swell of optimism among the support: and this carried through to season ticket renewals. I also seem to recall that Paul in his blog was cautious about asserting the appointment until it was completely ‘over the line’. It could be that the board are simply aiming to replicate this scenario with the current appointment.

Yesterday’s events in Glasgow with the support for the two people who are asylum seekers. I seem to recall a similar story of a ‘van rescue’ of the Parish Priest from St. Mary’s (?) a hundred years ago arrested for ‘Republican sympathies’ does anyone else remember that story shared here, have a link to it?

    Thanks in advance!

  9. TheLurkinTim on

McPhail Bhoy….av been deliberately avoiding all “news”….I hav no idea what yer talking about…”asylum seekers” seems, to me, to be a negative but acceptable label to give to human beings who are desperate for positive change….why they’ve chosen Scotland is another question

You can give us a hint — range of figures …

The free pie seats were told at the start of the season to pay up in full.

They were told that they would be one of the first groups allowed in if the restrictions were eased.

Also they were told that they would get a rebate for all the pies that they didn’t eat.

Some form of settling up when the full picture was known.

No idea regarding the rebate on offer.

All of the above is third hand gossip and so is open to interpretation.

However it offers some info on what is happening.

Stories like that and issues in my own family have convinced me to retire early and risk being skint at 70 than be a rich dead man. If it were not for Covid I would probably have retired this year but will hopefully go by early 2022 at the latest. All the very best to your mate.

  14. Macphail bhoy- Is this the smashing of the van at Drygate/Duke street? You talk of.

Given that there may be 7 or 8 CQNrs ( maybe more ?) in attendance, it will be best if we are all seated in the Large Lounge Area, near the Toilets ( for old Guys like me).

We wont be allowed to gather ( stand or Sit) at the bar anyway due to Covid Restrictions.

I’m not sure why you responded to me in the way you did. I used the term ‘asylum seekers’ as that is the factual, accepted term used by the UNHCR its not my term. It does imply universal human rights and is not in any way used to imply that I don’t see them as human beings fleeing terrible situations. The terms immigrant, economic migrant and a whole lot of worse terms are oftem used/interspersed about people looking to have a better/safer life for them and their families as is their right.

I used the term ‘asylum seekers’ solely as short hand and in a factually correct way, as I believe both gentlemen have in fact sought asylum in Scotland.

I hope that clarifies my earlier post.

  22. Thank you everyone for your kind words.

The man himself is in shock. He had hoped it was treatable but was told yesterday it was not. He went into hospital for a checkup because his blood pressure had spiked alarmingly while here. He has been in training to break various British records this summer for his age group. He is no spring chicken but there will only a handful of people in better shape for his age.

I only posted this morning as I felt it was another reminder for me that life is too precious to spend too much time worrying about comparatively trivial things.

Father McCrory was arrested after the event. He wasn’t in the van or present at the incident.

He was detained in Barlinnie and on his release was greeted with great celebrations on his return to St Mary’s. Flags and bunting across Abercrombie Street and the crowd singing.

I was given this description from an elderly relative (now sadly deceased) who was at the celebrations.

Enjoy life while you can and don’t sweat the little things.

More swimming, cycling, eating, drinking and travelling for me, the state can take care of me if I make it past 70!!
