Howe, Falkirk with a grievance

368

You and I have seen enough of the football business to know that even when someone verbally commits to joining Celtic, we should assume nothing.  Eddie Howe wanted his next destination to be an English Premier League city, not Glasgow.  Right now, the Bat Signal is lighting the clouds, anyone who wants to secure English football’s best young manager had better make their move over the weekend.  This is how football works, so let’s not get carried away.

If he arrives, it will be an appointment at the higher end of expectations, compare and contrast to Man City youth coaches who have never been in charge of a dressing room full of adults.  Or even Roy the Intense.

Having filtered through so many possibilities in recent weeks, I can find fault with every one of them, even Brendan Rodgers, who is clearly the best manager in British football right now, did not get a tick in the box when it came to recruitment.  We will critically assess Howe if and when he becomes Celtic manager. For now, let’s just hope we get our man.

Falkirk are atop the third tier and nurse a grievance from a year ago, when they were pipped to promotion by 0.03 of a point per game average by Raith Rovers.  Tomorrow’s Scottish Cup tie has all the hallmarks of an underdog fully motivated against an inconsistent giant.  Some of us will remember a comparable freezing cold night 15 years ago when a young Falkirk striker, Anthony Stokes, scored at Celtic Park on his way to a penalty competition victory in the League Cup.  Let’s turn up prepared and hungry this time; I want the Scottish Cup.

  1. Social media saying a verbal agreement has been reached with Eddie Howe.

    Formal announcement early next week.

    Here hoping.

  2. Howe now 1/6 but the fact that Arlene Foster is no longer quoted shows how little William Hill knows.

  3. In which case maybe best that Howe does not get the weekend to mull it over . . .

A lot of rumours and photos on Twitter of TV cameras being set up at CP. Might be nothing of course . . .

Jeez shucks I didn’t know you cared

I have been lucky with the walking companions, that Hamilton Tim fella and a former secretary of the CSA have been companions par excellence, the secretarys tales keep the miles traveled easy and light with his wit and chat Celtic, watching Hamilton Tim absorbing the majesty of Scotlands mountains into his soul has been magic, now if that big gentleman An tearman could find time to join us and even a recently returned former Dunblane resident, that would be a day out not to be missed

Take care to tenjoy being back close to the family, happy Easter

SCOTT BROWN explained how the uncertainty at Celtic played its part in his move to Aberdeen.

The 35-year-old Hoops captain will relocate to Pittodrie in a player-coach role under new boss Stephen Glass in the summer after 14 success-laden years at Celtic Park where he won 22 trophies.

Ahead of the Scottish Cup third-round tie against League One side Falkirk on Saturday night, midfielder Brown said: “I got offered another year at Celtic.

“It is a hard situation just now because it would have to be sitting waiting to the end of the season to see who comes in.”For me, to have that fresh start with someone I know, trust and respect fully, and maybe sitting in at Celtic to the end of the season not sure what to do or who is coming in – I think that played on my mind as well.

“It will be a sad time when I do leave but it has been fantastic, I have enjoyed every moment of it, winning trophies, winning games, playing in front of our fantastic fans.”

Asked if he had considered staying on to help with the transition at the Parkhead club, Brown said: “That was always in the back of my mind as well.

“I think I have to look at the selfish point of view as well.

    aff oot

“Aberdeen offered me a two year-deal and it was an offer I couldn’t turn down.”

  19. Howe is reportedly in advanced talks with the Celtic hierarchy to become their new manager. He has held discussions with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond and performed due diligence on behind-the-scenes matters.

he is already working on his backroom team. However, in a surprising turn of events, he wants to bring his own technical director with him in Richard Hughes.

Nick Hammond left his role as Head of Football Operations this week, a position which was reportedly being changed to a Director of Football. That role was set to be filled by Manchester City’s Fergal Harkin.

A deal was 90% done but news that Howe wants to bring Hughes with him instead puts a cloud of doubt over Harkin’s future.

Hughes is currently technical director at Bournemouth but news that Celtic could now move away from Harkin shouldn’t be welcomed by supporters.

The latter has developed a reputation as a transfer guru during his time with Manchester City and has been in charge of their loan system.

Howe is happy to stick with John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan, but wants Hughes to oversee a restructuring of the football operations. It is also claimed that former Celtic man Mark Burchill – now a scout at Bournemouth – is also in line for a job.

Instead, they’re looking at a director who has arguably spent poorly on the south coast of England. Although he built a squad which ultimately got promoted to the Premier League, some of his signings after Bournemouth came up were abject.

He spent £19m on Dominic Solanke, a player who has scored just 15 times in 81 outings for the Cherries. Hughes also played a role in bringing Jordon Ibe to Bournemouth in a deal worth £15m. The 25-year-old was released last summer after netting only five goals in 92 matches.

Considering some of the deals Hammond concluded at Parkhead – namely Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas – this wouldn’t necessarily be an upgrade.

I will be disappointed if we don’t get him after the speculation, I’m starting to get interested again….

  21. Research on Eddie Howe reveals a workaholic/100% committed manager – if it is to be him, let’s hope his squad is equally motivated – it’d be a welcome change from this season’s bunch of ‘wantaways’ & ‘towel-throwers’.

When will someone break ranks and ‘blow the whistle’ on why we surrendered 10iar so meekly – was money was the common denominator?….it usually is.

Did this soup taker actually think he could be Celtic manager??

Maybe he thought Bonner, Walker and Nicholas could be his coaching staff.

Stick to the soup taking, Paul, it’s the only money you’ll make from being a ‘Celtic legend’.

I don’t really get the animosity to Paul Lambert. I loved him as a player and dare to suggest that without Paul Celtic would not have stopped The Rankers doing 10 nor would they have reached Seville. Only MY opinion. What he has done since being a player I don’t care too much. ‘Soup takers’ too many to mention – as a matter of fact I would say only big Chris Sutton stands out as someone not afraid to tell it as it is (big Bad John almost?).

    Wow, deal ‘90% done’.

Can anyone tell me the difference between a deal that’s, say, 85 or 95% ‘done’ v a 90% done deal?

    Just curious.
