Howe, Falkirk with a grievance

368

You and I have seen enough of the football business to know that even when someone verbally commits to joining Celtic, we should assume nothing.  Eddie Howe wanted his next destination to be an English Premier League city, not Glasgow.  Right now, the Bat Signal is lighting the clouds, anyone who wants to secure English football’s best young manager had better make their move over the weekend.  This is how football works, so let’s not get carried away.

If he arrives, it will be an appointment at the higher end of expectations, compare and contrast to Man City youth coaches who have never been in charge of a dressing room full of adults.  Or even Roy the Intense.

Having filtered through so many possibilities in recent weeks, I can find fault with every one of them, even Brendan Rodgers, who is clearly the best manager in British football right now, did not get a tick in the box when it came to recruitment.  We will critically assess Howe if and when he becomes Celtic manager. For now, let’s just hope we get our man.

Falkirk are atop the third tier and nurse a grievance from a year ago, when they were pipped to promotion by 0.03 of a point per game average by Raith Rovers.  Tomorrow’s Scottish Cup tie has all the hallmarks of an underdog fully motivated against an inconsistent giant.  Some of us will remember a comparable freezing cold night 15 years ago when a young Falkirk striker, Anthony Stokes, scored at Celtic Park on his way to a penalty competition victory in the League Cup.  Let’s turn up prepared and hungry this time; I want the Scottish Cup.

Get Howe in, give him cash and watch The Glasgow Celtic soar. Simple.

If Hughes does come in, it doesn’t necessarily follow that Harkin won’t come in, two different roles.

I think a technical Director deals with the every day running of stuff but a DOF is all about the structures. It may also just come down to Howe saying this is who and what I want and Celtic bending.

    Keep the Faith!

big season for him coming up

  11. Eddie Howe ticks around 90% of my boxes and, as it’s clearly not Clemente (or Marsch) I’m happy with him. I didn’t do an analysis of him when looking at managers as, like many, I assumed he’d end up the an English Premier League team. Anyway, here’s a very brief summary:

Took over Bournemouth back when they were in League 2. As they were Ohhh n administration they had a -17 points punishment and transfer embargo to contend with. He kept them up comfortably. His second season saw them gain promotion to League 1.

Burnley came calling giving him his first taste of the Championship. 8th and 13th place finishes followed. In his second year, his mother sadly passed away, and thus he resigned from his post.

He took the reigns at Bournemouth again, securing promotion to the Championship in his (second) debut season. A creditable 10th place finish in their first season in the Championship was followed by promotion to the premier league. 4 seasons of safety followed.

Last season Bournemouth were relegated. A good start to the season tailed off and Bournemouth were really poor after the COVID restart – not alone in that as several teams were: Liverpool and Leicester being two obvious examples. They also had two major pieces of bad luck: firstly, Fraser refused to play when the league restarted to avoid the risk his Bosman transfer to Newcastle might fall through if he got injured/contracted COVID.

The second piece of bad luck was a hammer blow! Bournemouth finished 1 point behind Aston Villa and had a better goal difference. Villa famously “earned” a draw at Sheffield United because the Hawkeye system didn’t work and SU had a perfectly good goal disallowed. That happens in football, but when the PL spend a fortune on Hawkeye, it’s extraordinary bad luck that it goes wrong and that point saved Villa’s status.

He left by mutual consent and said he wanted a year out to learn and spend time with his family. He puts in the hours and Bournemouth players write to Mrs Howe to thank her for letting him do so. That probably partly explains why he knocked us back in November – he wanted a break and didn’t want to be moving his family (or away from his family) during lockdown. He also apparently turned down other jobs in England in this time, so it suggests he promised his family 12 months out and stuck to it.

Signing policy has, on the whole, been pretty good. Ibe and Solanke were the obvious poor signings – though Solanke was someone with real promise having been at Chelsea and Liverpool. Those failures are offset by the massive successes of Calum Wilson (Coventry to and England international), Nathan Ake, Ramsdale, Mings, etc.

Lots been said about his style – the boys analaytics fella has done some analysis here: https://mobile.twitter.com/BhoysAnalytics/status/1372864780936040448

More here (which shows how, left winger aside (and I’d expect us to look at Stanislas on a Bosman) our midfield is already in place in Forrest, Turnbull, Soro and CalMac): https://www.footballcoin.io/blog/bournemouth-fc/

SPIDEY101- Howe overachieved at Bournemouth, won 2 successive promotions to EPL, on a budget of tuppence, he probably should have left 2 seasons ago when they hit the ceiling.

Yeah, you are absolutely correct. Kick off times will never suit everybody.

Personally ( if we ever get back to normal ) I prefer the traditional 15.00hrs ko for attending the game and an early afternoon ko for watching away games in the boozer.

However I seem to remember the very unpopular 18.05 hrs Time on a Sunday night gave us our biggest attendance of the season, against St Johnstone.

Let’s all- makes a statement, new manager, new captain…..Callum could get 3 times his money in England, the guy needs a rest BTW

  15. The first important step IF Howe accepts the position is to replace the existing directionless low morale with a culture of respect care, and professionalism, current staff throughout ALL football depts as Broony’s recent explanation of why he choose Aberdeen reveals the months of indecision and lack of leadership, indeed there has been no leadership even when the previous manager was in situ, Howe will have to infuse in staff that their immediate future if they choose to stay at Celtic is secure, reassuring words and confidence as below

he definitely needs a rest. cant argue with that. he plays far too much football without enough rest in between

  17. Is the new pub,the old Grace.Need to be keeping an eye on those windows.Lovely entrance.

  18. BadaBing – you’re right, he stayed 1 or 2 seasons too long. I think he was banking on another job and Bournemouth getting compensation, so I admire his loyalty.

I’ve been a bit of a Howe fan for a while.
