Howe, Falkirk with a grievance

368

You and I have seen enough of the football business to know that even when someone verbally commits to joining Celtic, we should assume nothing.  Eddie Howe wanted his next destination to be an English Premier League city, not Glasgow.  Right now, the Bat Signal is lighting the clouds, anyone who wants to secure English football’s best young manager had better make their move over the weekend.  This is how football works, so let’s not get carried away.

If he arrives, it will be an appointment at the higher end of expectations, compare and contrast to Man City youth coaches who have never been in charge of a dressing room full of adults.  Or even Roy the Intense.

Having filtered through so many possibilities in recent weeks, I can find fault with every one of them, even Brendan Rodgers, who is clearly the best manager in British football right now, did not get a tick in the box when it came to recruitment.  We will critically assess Howe if and when he becomes Celtic manager. For now, let’s just hope we get our man.

Falkirk are atop the third tier and nurse a grievance from a year ago, when they were pipped to promotion by 0.03 of a point per game average by Raith Rovers.  Tomorrow’s Scottish Cup tie has all the hallmarks of an underdog fully motivated against an inconsistent giant.  Some of us will remember a comparable freezing cold night 15 years ago when a young Falkirk striker, Anthony Stokes, scored at Celtic Park on his way to a penalty competition victory in the League Cup.  Let’s turn up prepared and hungry this time; I want the Scottish Cup.

  1. Thanks ST, JG, SB.

I’m quietly excited about getting him, especially as he has experience of building a back room team up to EPL standards. While Bournemouth’s back room team won’t be up to Man City standards, it’ll be affordable for us and a step change for us – taking us into the modern world. Hughes as Technical Director has to be an “as well as” whoever we plan to appoint as DoF though…

Howe overachieved at Bournemouth, won 2 successive promotions to EPL, on a budget of tuppence, he probably should have left 2 seasons ago when they hit the ceiling.

    __________

What would signal him reaching the ceiling at Celtic? Champs League quallies? Europa League last 4 ? A couple of successive wins against the Hun?

I wish football hadn’t moved to bake-in – and how we all accept – managerial merry-go-rounds. Arsene no more…Fergie no more…Maley no more etc etc

how did we spend millions and lose the league so badly – gonna hurt for a long time.

Maybe ask those in charge of the finances and policy making about keeping the Blue Pound in the game?

    An interesting read.

Just to back up your argument a bit, from my limited appreciation of the Greatestleagueintheworld.

I think I remember that in Howe’s final season, Bournemouth were crippled with injuries especially with defenders, with the Ake fella who ended up going to Citeh for megabucks outmost of the season.

My own view, as stated yesterday, is that it’s immaterial who’s in charge unless DD and the new CEO move away from this focus on Hun survival.

Quad- it’s a good question, my only worry if EH comes in,and has a really good season, would he jump ship at the first decent EPL job that came up? I think the chance to build the Club up from Lennoxtown to first team, might be a great opportunity for him.

Squire – I can’t explain it. The whole club collpased.

    —-

You may think the club collapsed – there’s a school of thought that argue the club’s strategic interests are served by the reliability of a consistent realistic challenge from across the city.

I’ve been throughly sickened by the downsizing and rank bad strategic management over the last 5 years. I can’t prove anything but I have my suspicions and events don’t disprove me.

  10. Squire,

see unless there was a signed document that said “keep us in business and we let you do 9, then you let us do 1” i find it incredibly hard to get anywhere near a conclusion that our board conspired to lose the 10,because keeping frankensteins monster alive gave us our biggest return,

keeping it around the league fine, crippiling our own chances with deliberate strategy is too far fetched,

    Bada

If I may Gents, (IF. he comes) I don’t see EH looking at this scenario as a glass ceiling.

I see it more akin to working abroad for a year or two as part of getting your career trajectory back on course.

Success for him, may likely be, a good next role back in the EPL.

I can handle that. I’m realistic. And perhaps we’d enter into this relationship less naively and starstruck then we were with BR?

Certainly there’s no ‘Eddie Howe, here for 10IAR’ songs to sung. Nor the blarney about always being a Celtic fan and seeking Danny McGrain’s blessing to join!!!

Compared to what BR inherited, any new manager is coming into a wasteland in terms of staff and structures.

Think about the number of good first team players that BR knew he could come in and develop and build around. The Browns and Lustigs that we took as standard.

We have none. By that I mean, those with such quality are likely ‘want-aways’, many nearing the end of their contracts.

The rest are of a standard (lack of) that we want them to be ‘want-aways!’

The rebuild required is total. It’s do-able, but will require skill, resources and being left in peace to do so.

  12. Saint Stivs,

Give people a break. What exactly is the point of a record breaking vaccine roll out if there is no change.?

Mental health issues and cancelled hospital appointments must take prominence now.

quite possible it is already here.

look at the stubborn 7 day average , after the zobie celebrations.

i will absolutely bet there will be a lockdown later in the year in the UK.

in fact, 3 weeks from now we will be talking about why did we go too early, just like christmas.

That’s a wider argument. Chances over a couple of seasons or chances for the indefinite future???

There doesn’t need to have been, and Celtic PLC would need to be hellova stupid to ever have anything committed to writing. The Huns needn’t even have been aware.

The chances of me ever playing for us is getting slimmer by the day

  20. Bada Bing, St Stivs,

I do not trust BJ one bit ( or his Scottish equivalent) however if Covid passports are the only way to normality, then I will reluctantly accept it.

I remember the ” heated” debates on here about ID cards. No, nay never was the near unanimous view.

Roll on ID cards by stealth.

    We must remain wary.

What about my human rights not to be exposed to a deadly virus by people who choose not to take a vaccine?

I accept that people have a right to refuse it, but it does not, imo, give them the right to go into busy places and spread it to all and sundry.

  23. Willie Maley had played for the team since their inaugural match in May 1888, and on his retirement at the age of 29 was appointed secretary-manager in April 1897, effectively becoming the team’s first ever manager.

He remained in his post for almost 43 years, the longest serving manager in the club’s history, and guided the team to 30 major trophies.

I work in the travel game and I think that will be wishful thinking on the cruise liner company’s part.

Canada, which is one of the most popular destinations to cruise, has banned all ships until 2022 so they cruise companies may be looking to fill their calendar.

There’s currently a quarantine period for passengers arriving into the UK and the situation is forever changing on the continent also. Unless the passengers are not going ashore at any point I can’t see it happening – I can’t see us having vaccination passports agreed with other countries, or have enough people take them up to make sailing numerous ships viable in time for the summer.

  25. Sadly catastrophic political decisions taken in the early months by Johnson allowed Covid to be seeded in the population, our borders continually remaining open means new variants will arrive and sweep through dense population areas, we have Europes highest death toll that will sadly continue as there is no border control, a failed expensive track, and trace system means the new variants will take lives, if only we had a leader like below
