Howe pantomime ends, what now

1566

Two weeks ago, I cautioned that the line being given to Celtic by Eddie Howe, that he was waiting to assemble his backroom team, did not hold water, “This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.”

With his former Bournemouth backroom team now free from football commitments, I understand Howe told Celtic he is unable to convince his team to come to Glasgow and is not prepared to come without them.  I’m not buying that either.  He either has one of the EPL jobs he coveted, or his strength of character is not sufficient for him to cope in Glasgow without a chaperone.  If it is the former, he has strung us along, if the latter, he’s too weak to cope here.  It is the former, surely?

Howe was clearly our first choice and the man a board felt it worthwhile to not only offer a huge contract and the opportunity to recruit the entire backroom team, but to allow him to sit on the pot until the end of May.  Like all these decisions, it was a gamble.  Your view is as good as mine as to whether he was worth the wait.

So where has this left us?  The ponderous time Eddie Howe took allowed a clear preference to emerge if his deal remained unsigned.  You and I will have a weekend in the dark, which is frustrating, but I am not seeing any panic at Celtic Park.  The new guy is not from the EPL circus, we’ll find out soon enough if that is a good thing or not!

Have a good weekend, if that’s possible between the two mood killers of managerial recruitment and lockdowns.

As a support we should all be angry today.

Surely anyone who doesn’t feel that must be a hun?

  2. This isn’t about Celtic appointing or not appointing Eddie Howe. We operate in a free market. We can choose from more than a single option.

That Celtic don’t look like having a permanent manager as at 1st June isn’t Eddie Howes fault. The fault lies with Celtic.

  3. Everything the fans have done for that club lately and they treat us like dirt.

Paul Larkin was right about the new DOF Harkin, jobs for the boys.

Peter Lawwell Jr Larkin = Hawkins best buddy,

Final say today. The whole @CelticFC set up is wrong. Drip feeding info to lapdogs whilst saying nothing to your actual support is disgraceful. The fans want change and you won’t provide it. You just want to pretend you are. Therefore the board and executive at Celtic have to go

  6. !!Bada Bing!! on

Backroom staff should have been nailed down months ago,he should have signed up or we should have moved on, an embarrassing shambles of a club

  7. Go tell the Spartim on

At least PL has let us know that he’s still around with one last balls up.

Option B better not be Jack Ross, is that the level of our ambition

  8. onenightinlisbon on

    So who will we get?

    Ross?

    Kennedy?

    Neill?

    Keane?

Left field European unknown a la Rony?

  9. The season that refuses to end.

Very disappointing conclusion which we can’t say we weren’t warned of by Eddie Howe’s agent very soon after they were at Celtic Park, you’ll recall it was his sources that said he would take his time and no decision would be made until later ‘in the summer’.

Correctly Celtic went for the best candidate incorrectly, and where we went wrong was leaving the offer on the table for far too long, and in full view of the public. There were too many if but’s and maybe’s backroom staff, DOF, etc, etc and in the absence of any other candidates it left the already deflated Celtic support in Limbo.

When you get offered the Celtic job but want the early summer off to make up your mind, it should have seen Celtic very quickly move on to the next candidate. The as of today mystery appointment, isn’t ever a good sales pitch for a club that relies on season ticket sales, without the Celtic supporters we’re nothing.

And you’re as calm as a cup of warm water are you?

I know who’s feelings are most in line tonight with the vast, vast majority of our support.

    Moronic statement.

  11. Celtic Boardroom….” NATIONAL LAMPOON HOOSE” …mair like !

Negligence afoot methinks, and while I do NOT have any INSIDE info of any of the dealings between Celtic/Howe/His Backroom Team etc….I can only assume that Celtic have Cocked this Up ?

The Celtic Boards HISTORY and being very late with Transfer Dealings etc in the past, shows that they have “Previous”, and to allow ANY possible new Manager ALL of these months to make up his mind is, in my view ” GROSS NEGLIGENCE” ?

Some may agree with me…some may NOT…..I really dont care any more ?

ASSUMING that indeed, Howe was Celtic’s No.1 Target and that Howe himself ( being UNemployed), and was FREE to speak freely about his possible future and that he had agreed to come to Celtic ” VERBALLY”, then imho Celtic SHOULD have got something in writing IF possible at the earliest stage ?

  12. Utter shambles.. and posting for season books when they knew Howe wasn’t coming is detestable

Roll over and let Uncle Peter rub your little tum tums (and pick your pockets while he’s doing so).

    Lions led by donkeys.

  14. Ten months ago, or so, we could have told prospective candidates “come and lead a club that collects trophies for fun”.

    How the outlook has changed.

  15. It’s been a helluva year. Don’t let today’s news affect your weekend.

Accept it the news and move on.

    Or

Get really angry at everyone who doesn’t match you on the anger scale. Because only ‘real’ supporters are angry right now.

    ———-

You make good points and I don’t take issue – yes the buck stops with Celtic.

However, would you agree that there must a have significant points of agreement with negotiations lasting as long as they have?

So ultimately what was the deal-breaker?

Yes it could have been the size of the budget – that may be put out as the non-controversial reason – simply a business decision.

In my opinion the Peter Lawwell attack and George Square are the real reason. After these actions, how on earth could EH and his backroom staff possibly sell a move up here to their families?

Paul mentioned last week that Peter Lawwell had said when asked why he doesn’t constantly challenge all the crap that comes out of Ibrox and their fan base, “these people know where I live”. Unfortunately it looks like he was right.

  17. Make no mistake we are a club in dissary.

To have waited so long on a manager fir him to stick 2 fingers up at us is shambolic. Miss management of the highest order.

I am sick to the pit of my stomach of our board.

Top tier definitely shut then for next season as long as these GOONS are in charge.

You have expressed my feelings exactly . Celtic F C demeaning itself , acting like a small club who have forgotten their history and who they are .

They have not only disconnected from the fans , they have disconnected from our standing in the eyes of the world .

  20. Go tell the Spartim on

You just know that if Celtic Plc were to take penalties even David de Gea would even save it.

I’m not angry but I might be when they announce the ‘manager’

We have just concluded our managerial review and the conclusion is that Neil Lennon is still the man for the job…….

I am not angry at all.

a body of celtic supporters hounded the board to sack a succesful manager, then whine for the rest pf the season, that they still aint doing what the supporters want. dont know why the fuss about howe, won nothing, doubt he will win wherever he goes next.

if he is dependent on “his” backroom staff he cant be much of a leader.

I turned down a warehouse managers job one time because the forktruck drivers and order pickers wouldnt come with me.

it is all about the money, watch where he pitches up next.

ps, when the lockdown is over, dont expect a tourism boom from down south, they will be too feart to come through glasgow.

    utter nonsense reasoning.

  23. garcia lorca on

What is really surprising and deeply disappointing is the apparent lack of instinct that we were being played.

Now just to be clear we are all on the outside trying to interpret what might be going on and much of it is guesswork at best.

That said this Celtic management appointment is key to any future strategy but it looks like we have allowed the tail to wag the dog. Any of us who have hired senior people develop an instinct for this sort of deal and whilst, no doubt there were complexities, its beginning to look that we should have called it out much earlier ( given the circumstances of the season just finished, the need to assemble a squad of players and not least appease a disillusioned fan base ).

Really poor and, of course, when we do hire a new manager he will be seen ( quite rightly ) as second choice.

In many ways this is actually a continuation of the shambles of a season and topped off with this farce.

  24. You ask the guy what he wants, you agree, deal done, we got £9million for BR.

If he says wait till I see if my staff will come. Then tell him to Do one and move on.

That should have been done in January or December or November.

    Sack the board.

    D :)

  25. Are people blaming the attack on Lawwell’s house for Howe not coming actually serious?

Had to check it wasn’t the 1st of April.

  26. garcia lorca on

PS- I didn’t hold out a torch for Howe. I had no real opinion on him however very poor general management on display at Celtic

  27. The back of the bus patter is so down level, nobody lording it over me either, it is a stupid stance to take.

    When interviewing Brendan ………….

you know though Brendan, Neil got assaulted, attacked, bombs and bullets in the post,

eh, remind me again Dermot, how much did you say was the salary ?

  28. Garcia Lorca – You are presuming our board give a feck.

They dont. They are only interested in how much they can skim.
