Howe pantomime ends, what now

1566

Two weeks ago, I cautioned that the line being given to Celtic by Eddie Howe, that he was waiting to assemble his backroom team, did not hold water, “This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.”

With his former Bournemouth backroom team now free from football commitments, I understand Howe told Celtic he is unable to convince his team to come to Glasgow and is not prepared to come without them.  I’m not buying that either.  He either has one of the EPL jobs he coveted, or his strength of character is not sufficient for him to cope in Glasgow without a chaperone.  If it is the former, he has strung us along, if the latter, he’s too weak to cope here.  It is the former, surely?

Howe was clearly our first choice and the man a board felt it worthwhile to not only offer a huge contract and the opportunity to recruit the entire backroom team, but to allow him to sit on the pot until the end of May.  Like all these decisions, it was a gamble.  Your view is as good as mine as to whether he was worth the wait.

So where has this left us?  The ponderous time Eddie Howe took allowed a clear preference to emerge if his deal remained unsigned.  You and I will have a weekend in the dark, which is frustrating, but I am not seeing any panic at Celtic Park.  The new guy is not from the EPL circus, we’ll find out soon enough if that is a good thing or not!

Have a good weekend, if that’s possible between the two mood killers of managerial recruitment and lockdowns.

  1. Why not approach

    Christophe Galtier ?

Took 3 seasons to build his Lille team to win French league, then resigned following day

Not heard his name mentioned elsewhere

    Think outside the box

Big Peter’s WhatsApp messaging has clearly gone into overdrive tonight.

Right troops, get yourselves onto CQN. Operation Gaslight is GO!!

    ——————–

have you got his number ?

why would it be PL’s fault that Eddie Howes back room staff wouldnt come ?

From long stabdinbg on here, I think I have met 7 people who had any dealings with PL at anytime, 5 of them dont post here anymore.

That’s very precise. You’re clearly a man in the know.

  4. Ps why are Scotland players in Spain? To acclimatise for games at Hampden???..hope Scottish press are onto them like Dubai trip

  5. Why is it not Liewells fault if he was in charge of negotiation as we are being told.

Falls squarely at Liewell at whoever else was in negotiations.

Also the rest of the board for a total clusterfeck

    D :)

  6. Another typo

“The ponderous time Eddie Howe took” should read “the ridiculous amount of time Celtic allowed their seemingly sole target”

We really have started to settle for second best, as a support. Worrying

So we sit at the back of the bus and allow the huns to lord it over us?

    ———-

I am not saying anything of the kind. The oft-mentioned ‘back of the bus’ phrase is not applicable in Scotland. We can sit anywhere ‘on the bus’ but we still get derided & abused with impunity by the majority.

What I do say is that when people from outside Scotland are made aware of the bigotry & sectarianism that is extant here, it takes their breath away. When someone like Eddie Howe realises, after recent events, that taking this job will put him front and centre in such an environment, is it any wonder he walks away.

Some in Scotland try to sell the lie that things have changed over the years – it hasn’t – recent events bears that out.

I know who had dealings with PL, because they told us on the blog, and in conversations at celtic fans events. The 5 who no longer post here were not complimentary of the outcome of the dealings, and indeed felt led down, not only over res12, but all sorts of issues over new vclub and the 5 way agreement.

I personally have never met him or indeed any of the board memebers, not a one. Neither have I had any business dealings with any of them. but I will listen to people who have met him, and I trust their judgements.

Try being objective, all that pent up anger for several it is unhealthy, if your still wailing I do think you should get a less stressful past-time.

  9. Celtic trying to push the blame on to Howe and specifically his back room team when we’ve had 3 months to appoint a manager.

The malaise, the unprofessionalism, the incompetence is disgusting.

That has been answered by others.

EH agent said he want to wait to the summer to make a decision, and it is dependent on his own staff coming.

His staff dont come, he turns it down, how is that PLs fault ? Or the board ?

Let me ask a different question, would we have been in any worse a position if NL had stayed to the end of the season ?

Letting him go, and putting JK in the hot seat was a waste of time, it should have been all out and a new appointment made then,

All good here…..in fact, very good as number 2 daughter became a Mother last Wednesday, our second grandson. Both well, particularly our daughter who endured eight and a half months of HG in pregnancy but has recovered remarkably well. Wish I had her resilience to cope with our hapless board.

The first para of your response is very interesting. And doesn’t surprise me.

Your last para misreads my emotional state.

And unlike Peter’s plants on here (I take you at your word you aren’t amongst them) I am objective to a fault. I am just a slave to the evidence.

Are people blaming the attack on Lawwell’s house for Howe not coming actually serious?

Had to check it wasn’t the 1st of April.

    ——-

Are you really saying that finding out the top man of a company you are considering joining may have been the subject of an horrendous attack by rivals would not play on your mind?

That seeing the sectarian based carnage in George Square, which was reported all over the UK, would not alarm you and your family and put you off?

  15. Worrying thing is, i think we all assumed Howe was pulling strings in the background over the last few months. Whoever it is now, its day 1…literally zero prep.

  16. SS – I hire staff, I do not let them dictate to me when they start.

    End of.

PL was in talks with Howe and should have given him a deadline of 1 week to let him get back to us then we should have moved on.

Celtic should never wait that long for anyone to decide if they want to come to us.

    D :)

  17. Notthebus

I suspect a great many did not believe Howe was working on the background at all.

You are, however, quite correct to point out we are at day zero. Or will be, when we finally do get a new management team in

  18. A cracking point from 90 minute cynic

We honestly didn’t believe that the club could absolutely embarrass us after this season. How they treated the 10 season, how they treated the support.

They have somehow found a way to absolutely embarrass us and the club further.

    Unforgivable

  19. jeez_I_thought_blinker_was_pants on

NORRIEM – Good shout , but he seemingly worked out a deal to take over at Nice weeks ago. Done very well to win the league against the oil-rich PSG.

  20. SCANIEL on 28TH MAY 2021 6:31 PM

Congrats on the birth of your grandson, we had our 1st grandson, to join our 3 granddaughters, 3 weeks ago, por cierto.

  21. Shattered but not at all surprised. No professional business would have allowed itself to be dangling on someone else’s string – it is embarrassing for the club and we are all wide open to the ridicule that will be coming our way.

That is was taking so long was only palatable because we assumed all was well and stuff was happening behind the scenes with players in and out for the last two month’s. Now that appears not to be the case and whoever is coming is undoubtedly second choice will be starting with a fresh piece of paper with no knowledge of what he may be inheriting- it is laughable and as someone said previously if this was happening across the river we would be pissing ourselves. Shambles really is under reporting this – D. King beginning to look like some kind of genius and all down to our piss poor management. Feel like we have been transported back to the 90’s

  22. SS – I agree when Lenny went everyone should have followed.

Whether we sacked Lenny when we did or let him stay on is hypothetical.

We should not let anyone keep us dangling/waiting on them.

    D :)

  23. OFFICIAL CELTIC STATEMENT

We can now confirm that Eddie will not be joining the Club, for reasons outwith both his and Celtic’s control.

    ———

The budget is under Celtic’s control. The ability to say yes is under Eddie’s control.

What is not under the control of either is the guarantee of a safe working and living environment for Eddie Howe, his backroom staff and their families.

Surely this is as clear as a bell now?

  24. SAINT STIVS on 28TH MAY 2021 6:15 PM

It’s not Celtic’s fault Howe and his team said no.

It’s our fault we’ve waited three months hanging on a dithering man’s word. Leicester told Rodgers “now or never” as time is of the essence (before the season had ended).

We’re just weeks away from CL qualifying and facing a huge rebuild and our manager search is back to square one.

Saying this is farcical doesn’t make you less of a fan. It’s a shambles and if this was Sevco, we’d be in stitches.

  25. Are we to take it therefore that Howe has not been to Lennoxtown, has not met the players, and was never at Celtic Park and that reports to the contrary from various well connected sources were in fact incorrect?

All this is enough to shake your faith in human nature.

  26. That’s a point who has been letting players go.

How can we be linked with players if we have no manager?

Or is big Pete dabbling again in team matters?

    D :)

  27. DAVID66 on 28TH MAY 2021 6:42 PM

I agree on your points, Sports hiring it appears is alien in comparison to normal business.

If Howe was the man, give him a pre-contract agreement with a penalty. if he doesnt like it move on.

On a number of occasions, these past few weeks, I’ve mentioned well intentioned though ill informed posters.

No doubt some mischief makers also.

  29. DAVID66 on 28TH MAY 2021 6:42 PM

Lenny had to go. It might not have made any difference to results but the club was toxic and more protests may have reared their heads as speculation mounted that Lennon would be allowed to stay next season and “rebuild”.

It’s nine months now since Ferencvaros and most on here knew then that the game was up…
