Huge day as Sword of Damocles hovers over Rangers

327

Today the Scottish Premier League will vote on proposals to allow a Newco to parachute straight into the top league in the country if an existing SPL club goes into liquidation.  Fans from 11 of the 12 clubs have overwhelmingly opposed the idea.  Rangers fans are split, some would prefer a Newco to apply to the Scottish Football League, others think a Newco should be allowed into the SPL without penalty.

Long before this vote was a glint in the eye of the SPL, it was first discussed on Celtic Quick News.  Last October we raised the alarm that Rangers were undertaking an enormous charade.  They were preparing to liquidate in order to avoid the consequences of failing to pay their taxes for over a decade.

We also predicted they would present the SPL with a fait accompli – vote us ‘back’ or suffer our scorched earth policy, as we take the rest of you down.  For what it’s worth, I also predicted the league would capitulate and Celtic would stand alone in opposition.

10 of the 12 SPL clubs bank with Lloyds Banking Group (Celtic and Hearts excluded). For months I have suggested that LBG could threaten to withdraw overdraft facilities if clubs voted against the revenue Rangers bring but this is not the case. Clubs have a free vote, there is no banking overlord conspiring against democratic wishes, LBG, like the SFA Judicial Panel, have played this with a straight bat.

Right now, I have no idea how the vote will go.  The proposal to establish procedures to allow a phoenix club straight into the league could be passed or rejected.  If they are rejected, it may be because a majority would rather Newco was back without penalties, or it may be because clubs have listened to their fans and taken a stand.

If the vote goes against Rangers I expect we will see a rapid move to liquidate.  If it goes in their favour (and by that I mean a parachute, with penalties, is invented for them), liquidation becomes a more attractive prospect, if not, actually, attractive.

They would still have to overcome potential challenges from creditors, security of Craig Whyte over Ibrox, and, of course, the many penalties that Newco would inherit along with the gift of Rangers SPL share.  For now, this means last week’s SFA ban on signing players, but the alleged improper registration of players matter is coming over the hill soon, and the penalties for that… wow!

As I said, I have no idea which way the vote will go. Rangers are finished and it would genuinely be best for them if someone put them out of their misery and allowed them to start the recovery process, but in the light of the intimidation of Raith Rovers last week, it remains to be seen if the other SPL clubs are up to the task.

Most of us called last week’s SFA punishment wrong, what do you think will happen today?

Huge day. Huge, huge, day.

Tell Fiona and Isobel they missed a great night out last Saturday at the Saffron Lounge!

  2. If I was a betting a man (which I am) I’d say the vote will be passed to allow them to parachute back in but without the real punishment which is the loss of 75% of revenues.

When I got back from the game yesterday Fiona laid on pies and sandwiches. There must have been something in them because I didn’t half get battered!

  6. I just had a wonderful thought, wouldn’t it be “just” if RFCia won their claim against Collyer & Bristow who were told to cough up 25M in damages

only for C&B to fall into Administration?

Not likely to happen but it would certainly make me laugh (more).

Is the SPL vote the deciding factor?

As I understand it a Newco parachuted into the SPL would, because it is an SPL club, be subject to UEFA licensing criteria for a license to play IN THE SPL.

How a Newco meet the criteria having no business history to justify a licence or, if they use Oldco history, too many violations, I do not know, unless a case for an exception is made to UEFA, presumably by the SFA, perhaps at behest of the SPL.

If a license cannot be granted how can a Newco play football without one?

Either a license is a playing condition of Scottish football or it is not and the way MSM has ignored the issue would suggest it was not, focussing on membership (which is within SFA/SPL control) as they have.

On the other hand club licensing might be the dinosoaur killer and the MSM just want to keep the news from the dinosoaurs that an ebt (extra terrestial ballistic turd) of another dimension is heading for Ibrox

    Paul 67,

is there any chance of a ‘third way’ in the SPL vote i.e. something along the lines of a delay by telling Doncaster to go back and review/amend his proposals?

My feeling is that is tthat with he Big Tax Case and, more importantly in this case, the player registration findings still to be reported, any vote is actually premature?

Every other body has sought delay to avoid being the party that delivers the final blow . Is there wriggle room for the SPL to join the long queue of procrastinaters waiting for Hector to come over the hill?

Unfortunately I think today will be the day self preservation of some Clubs will out muscle the need to “maintain” sporting integrity.

I cant for a minute imagine the required quota will be reached.

Newco straight into the SPL with the penalties.

Rightly or wrongly (and we have our take on this) the Clubs will decide whats best for them, itll then be sold to the wider audience as a democratic decision taken by the Member Clubs all using their free vote, so “lets move forward and ensure this never happens again”

The creditors can eat cake, but only if they can afford it after being cheated out of monies due.

  10. I never mentioned it before but the 25th of March was actually my 40th Birthday and boy was I sick that day after the result at Ibrox.

However I feel about ten years younger after yesterdays performance and my little boy jumping into my arms when Mulgrew stuck that header in the net.

I do love the derby games but if my son never sees another one then Rangers only have themselves to blame, no amount of bleating and pleading should absolve them of their crimes. The other SPL clubs and the SFA have a real choice to make here and it isn’t a financial one no matter what Ally McCoist says.

They can either kill the league and Scottish Football by voting for a Newco back into the SPL or they can vote for rebirth and regeneration by going down the route of Football integrity.

    It really is that simple.

  11. My guess is the points penalty will be ratified but the financial one will be a close call.

2 strands of thought here, several clubs on the brink just now as it is but all the others will see the chance of a getting a larger slice of money should somebody else fail. Hard one to call in my opinion. Will be a close vote.

    the Gatcerasher.

Sannabhoy and Paul67 will understand that one :)

  12. I have just sent a new proposal to the SFA, one that I thought was obvious and that they may have overlooked. It is a bit long winded so I will understand if anyone wants to scroll through.

Anyroadup, was thinking the change to the voting system was the biggest issue today. Pointless having another couple of clubs voting them down if it takes a min of four clubs, innit geezias

Regarding the 2 contracts, something stinks and i honestly feel that they will be liquidated before this and then there will be no need to investigate it, someone please tell me I’m wrong.

  19. Paradise, the next phase :

As I approach my 45th year of going to Celtic games, I have found over the years I take more and more interest in the stadium developments and the works around the East End.

Going to matches all these years I love not only football, but venues as well.

As a kid going to a new park and ticking it off the list of places visited was allways 2nd to just seeing the Celtic win.

I also then moved onto reading the works of Simon Inglis in Football Grounds of Great Britain, then Europe.

    Two wonderful books .

So my point is this, going to yesterdays match, the new road now open, the velodrome across the street, and overall access improved, Celtic Park is looking beautiful and the triangle development will see it improve again.

I was early up yesterday for a change, and that hour or so of wandering about looking at our home was great.

I dont envy any Celtic fan living abroad and missing going to the games. But on returning to Paradise what it must be like to see all the changes must be wonderful.

A wee highlight, and I am sure its been done by some of our own in the GCC.
