Huge game amid many distractions

Brendan Rodgers’ comments about Moussa Dembele, “It’s something you have to deal with”, suggests it is likely we will be without him tonight, meaning we go into one of the biggest games of the season without (currently) our best striker.

As it stands right now, it is likely, but not certain, that Moussa will leave this week.  For a start, those delicate muscles would need to pass a fitness test.  One week ago, Celtic expected the player to remain at the club until January, when they believed his value would be no less than it was then.  That possibility remains, and it should be noted, Moussa has behaved professionally.

The situation is far from ideal.  Only yesterday, I wrote about the need to concentrate on the important job to be done tonight.  Under any reasonable circumstances, we should see Suduva out of the competition comfortably, but this is football and we both know anything can happen if one team is even 10% off peak form.

The Europa League is a poor relation to the Champions League but it remains hugely important, not least of all in attracting one or two players, who will want European as well as domestic exposure. I don’t know how motivated the squad are, but they should be at peak preparedness; tonight is significantly the most important game of the week.

One positive is that Leigh Griffiths was made for days like these.  He has the experience and aptitude to lead the line.

Let’s get this job done.

  1. Latest rumour – Paul the Tim is under going a medical at Ross Hall. Wages may be an issue, according to the French, Pete is a “tricky” negotiator, even a bulldog. I could think of a lot of other things to call him…

  2. Nobody or nothing is exempt from criticism, apart from the CEO and the PLC board.

There’s a double treble winning manager getting it in the neck now.

    Shocking.

  3. So for the second time…..

Me – “I’m not talking about the transfer window…..agreed. it’s been a shambles.”

Hands – Talks about the transfer window only.

    All the best.

CG DB Broonie LG : not a bad spine if you stick in Ntcham & KT tracking back and JF. Should be enough for tonight.

  9. there is a gaggle of geese on cqn who support mein host and his views without manageing to think for themselves.

they cannot be challenged as they cannot entertain debate ; a most unceltic like behaviour.

the funny thing is if the host flipped and Brendan was God and Lawwell was good ; quite quickly they would do soo too.

On every other Celtic board (apart from the PLC ) our illustrious CEO is rightly taken to task.

Is this a Lawwell supporters blog or a Celtic blog.

Quite amazing one man can do so much damage and it is blissfully ignored.

Hope there is 10,000 there tonite.

  10. Regarding Mulumbu- we are going to need players that can handle themselves and also dish it out this year, so it’s a yes from me but, of course, would like to have seen him brought in earlier.

What’s the hosterly of choice tonight….anyone going to BV. Just about to board Fred C’s iron horse. Feel like my 15 year old self going to my first game on my own – ferry, train then no. 64 bus… and just as excited.

That’s cobblers mate. For all the vitriol against Paul67 this is the best Celtic site out there, differentiated by a desire by some to suggest our problems are a bit more complex than 1 bogeyman at the top. He’s absolutely not blameless but some of the stuff here is just playground name calling by grown up men with silly online monikers. I find it quite comical.

  12. Mulumbu is positive.

    Benkovic would be cracking…

Any wee ripples of happiness emerging from the angry brigade out there yet ???

Brendan has won 2 trebles in a row, something even our best manager couldn’t achieve

Yes, he has made mistakes like all manager do but he has filled Celtic Park and brought 2 years of CL revenue

    He deserves financial backing

  14. mulumbu desperation from Lawwell.

cant wait to see what other frees we find available.

  15. It amazes me how the ubiquitous Peter Lawwell is going to get all these deals done in the next 24 and a bit hours. Rumour has it he is actually a member of the Claus family and the original name was Claus-Lawwell. So mega multitasking is a mere bagatelle to members of the ‘family’

Nth Stand upper section 405, most people are generally supportive in our section.

Maybe its a non conspiracy section and I never even knew……………..:-)

  17. Well chuffed with the signing of “Murdo” Mulumbu √

    He’s a cute, tidy, intelligent player who’ll bring cohesion to the front sweeper area of the pitch, I suggested that we should sign him when I first saw him at Killie, only to get the big Mark McGhee stick rattled off ma nut ;

If we’d signed the player when I pointed him out, the club could be £30 million up at this point.

Just goes to show that, you should never be so far up yourself, that you might just miss the screatching howls, of the Jungle banshee’s ; Howwwooooooll.

Empty the park, before it’s too late CSC

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  18. Big Wavy,

the minute Paul67 started the snide remarks against Brendan he left himself open to similar responses from Celtic fans who can think for themselves.

we all know any attack on Brendan is a delection away from Lawwell. The normal diversion would be Rangers/Sevco but that opportunity is denied at present —-unless UFA can provide an upset.

Lawwell and Sevco out has a nicering to it

  19. Just watched a couple of minutes of the Sevco game on Russian ( I think ) TV. I am sure the commentator mentioned `Celtic` three times !

Flowing football was a noticeable absentee in those couple of minutes.

Sad, wishing failure on a team you claim to support.

    Will you be there?

  21. HOTSMOKED @3:13

What does that matter when they score a screamer into the top corner?

  22. paolosboots FC before PLC on

I thought the idea was buy low sell high. So what happened to taking £9m for Boyata and buying 2 players in the £4/5m bracket so to continually freshen up the squad. It was always going in the right direction till the summer. Three players at world cup and with money banked we should have our list of players for each position. PL was spouting about how robust celtic are and all the scenarios and succession planning that goes into the club!!! Looks like fake news to me.

But now Rodgers has his eyes wide opened about where he can take the club. Ambition if you can call it that is to stay one step away from sevco. As fans we are aware of not spending beyond our means. We can see where the team is weak but someone has seriously dropped the ball. Im sorry to see Moussa go but his hamstrings are an issue in one so young. Turning £400k into £22.5m if thats the case is a good deal but Rodgers is unlikely to get the money PL has a pentouse suite in the Hotel Mediocre to get built beside the club so he can count his bonus.

Im afraid BR has realised we are going nowhere fast and dreams of punching above our weight in the CL Groups and beyond are just that beyond us.

  23. Terry and Toure, that would ensure 8 & 9 in a row. Ain’t no domestic team getting the better of those two.

Free as well. A fraction of MD’s transfer fee would cover their wages for 1-2 seasons and allow the team to develop other projects out of the spotlight.

  24. A little known fact is that Peter Lawwell is one of the most highly remunerated people on the planet. His hourly rate is phenomenal considering he only works 4 days a year and that’s under duress, the last 2 days of the summer transfer window and the last 2 days of the January transfer window.?

  25. paolosboots FC before PLC on

Deniabhoy totally agree , one of them should have been here months ago. Expecting Hendry and Ajer to get us into CL was someones idea of gambling and losing. When the fun stops stop as they say!
