Huge game amid many distractions

Brendan Rodgers’ comments about Moussa Dembele, “It’s something you have to deal with”, suggests it is likely we will be without him tonight, meaning we go into one of the biggest games of the season without (currently) our best striker.

As it stands right now, it is likely, but not certain, that Moussa will leave this week.  For a start, those delicate muscles would need to pass a fitness test.  One week ago, Celtic expected the player to remain at the club until January, when they believed his value would be no less than it was then.  That possibility remains, and it should be noted, Moussa has behaved professionally.

The situation is far from ideal.  Only yesterday, I wrote about the need to concentrate on the important job to be done tonight.  Under any reasonable circumstances, we should see Suduva out of the competition comfortably, but this is football and we both know anything can happen if one team is even 10% off peak form.

The Europa League is a poor relation to the Champions League but it remains hugely important, not least of all in attracting one or two players, who will want European as well as domestic exposure. I don’t know how motivated the squad are, but they should be at peak preparedness; tonight is significantly the most important game of the week.

One positive is that Leigh Griffiths was made for days like these.  He has the experience and aptitude to lead the line.

Let’s get this job done.

  1. Friends in the media, Bonner, Dembele now 15m in his opinion, which is a big big fee for Scotland, listening to him he sounds as is he wants Celtic to sell him and wants the club to fail.

What a complete and utter shambles. A £10m game tonight and we go out with 1 striker in the squad.

I saw a photo on twitter of a removals van at Moussa’s House. That plus the fact he’s not in the squad suggests he’s going with or without a replacement in place.

    Disgraceful.

Hearing if you win tonights Paradise Windfall then youre straight into the squad for Sunday

if thats true i bet the winner pulls a hammy running on to the pitch

  4. Most important games of the season: the champions league qualifiers.

Anyway as a club celtic member i only attend for the free pie at half time – thanks peter.

We are building a team here at celtic. I think now with wanyama and van dijk and Moussa in front of forster in goal my confindence levels are up and the game on Sunday cant come fast enough.

    CELTIC CHAMPS ELECT

Swansea will not be paying wages higher than us. Their wage bill may be at the moment but Championship clubs do not spend the type of money we do on wages

    Parachute payments DO KEEP UP

  6. Dexter P. Bampot on

Good source tells me that we are close to getting another over the line.

Only stumbling block may be Willo’s wages.

  7. SANDMAN – They have two players that are a danger to us and a step up from what they had last season.

McGregor is the best keeper in the SPFL, can see him securing a few points for them that they would otherwise drop.

At the other end Lafferty is no mug. Cheating bar steward for sure, but he’s going to score for fun this season and, unlike Morelos, will have no fear facing us.

Key for us is speed of movement, something that Sinclair, Forrest, Rogic, Griffiths and OE all excelled at against them in recent games. Such a pity that Sinclair has lost his A Game, he’s been a huge loss to our attacking effectiveness for months now.

FFS, Goldson played 3 times in the EPL since they went up – his career is a journeyman through league 1, 2 and the championship.

Katic came on as a sub in a friendly against Mexico and is a slow as a week in Barlinnie.

Barisic has never played a competitive game for Croatia and picked up jis first transfer fee in his career going to Sevco.

You’r easily pleased when it comes to pedigree if that’s your facts.

  9. For me James Forrest has just nailed it on his Celtic Blog…….we are a football club that funds a business not a business that funds a football team

  10. Ray Singh-Carr on

With the Mulumbu capture this window starts to look more and more Willo-Floodesque. And that didn’t end well.

If we get £15m or more for Moussa then it represents good business but it is the timing that sucks. Unless of course we have a hatful of rabbits lying around somewhere which I seriously doubt.

Honestly, you couldn’t make this stuff up!

But anyway, we are where we are. 2 good wins in the next 72 hours and I suppose it will largely be forgotten but there are a few people behind the scenes at CP that need to take a long hard look at the lax way they perform their duties. We the fans deserve better.

  11. C’mon the Brendan. Moussa stays…

Let’s get to it Celtic. Red wine has a lot to answer for. HH

  12. So, after letting Dembele and his people talk to a club before a fee had even been arranged we’ve rejected Lyon’s bid and now it won’t happen?

if we were going to just reject the bids why did we bother to let the agents talk to the club … oh bollocks, who the Hell knows who’s running the railroad right now?

Jesus, they really are making it up as they go along aren’t they?

Or it could just be that on this one Brendan is digging in his heels and showing his claws at last.

They don’t half leave your head spinning.

  13. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ BIG WAVY on 30TH AUGUST 2018 7:10 PM

We have record turnover, record profit, we are going to make £40m in transfer fees and £30m in the bank.

We have signed Edouard, a good signing.

Then Izzzy- free, Arzani- loan and Morgan £300k.

You seem to think that is acceptable and you are saying I’m easily pleased?

  14. Paul67 et al

Want to play in Europe? This is your opportunity!

    Come on the Hoops!

  15. Evening Celts

Think we will score a few tonight 4-0 the Celtic. We need this to overcome a poor start on and off the park.

    Onwards to victory.

  16. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Jimtim – ta. My bad.

Moussa deal in morning then one every four hours until midnight?

  17. If Moussa is staying and Dedryck is too; I think we may have done the right thing by both of them. Moussa would be better off in EPL for fame and fortune and they always look to panic buy in jan . MORE money for us. DEdryck opp had passed so we move on . Again , we may sell in Jan to EPL or we get a decent player for a season more.

If Moussa is off Home, I wish him well. Lovely player and top lad
