Hugely important League Cup tie

873

We have had games which were hugely important to the club, and to our new manager, some which were ‘must win’ games, which were ultimately lost, but tomorrow’s League Cup tie against Hearts is a must win game for different reasons.

A year ago we lost in this competition to one of the worst teams to win at Celtic Park in the last half century, possibly longer, but thus Hearts side are a Premiership team in all but name and come with the weight of their history behind them to fell Scottish football’s last superpower.

I’ve seen Hearts win at Celtic Park before, there is one particular painful memory as they taunted us while drawing, but Ronny and his new recruits should know, this game ranks above all league matches in order of importance.

  1. Shockeroonie, In Scottish parliament, Salmond damns the Huns for their “thugish” behaviour in George square. None of the “unionist” parties makes a comment including Lamont. Shame.

  3. “Celtic have only won one game from the last seven. Hearts have won seven and drawn one. ”

Hearts have won 7 and drawn 1 in their last seven games?!?

Well that’s just plain cheating Henry ;)

To a large extent the delays in benefit were has been caused by the staff reductions in the Dept. Work and Pensions.

    https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.whatdotheyknow.com%2Frequest%2F56615%2Fresponse%2F140587%2Fattach%2F2%2FFoI%25207%252013.01.11.doc&embedded=true

The coalition government was in a reckless rush. Giving them the benefit of the doubt you could say they cut their staff levels too far and were unprepared for the massive increase in destitution their actions would cause, on the other hand you could say they deliberately engineered it.

I think we’ll probably disagree on which of these we believe.

Sorry but i got to go, I’ll catch up with any response later.

He’s waiting on Wakaso as well, so who knows. If you look at all his games in charge the only certainty is that McGregor will play, and if Wakaso is fit he’ll opt for both of them as he did in Salzburg.

A very open team IMHO, which doesn’t help the midfield where we are a combative player down.

Hearts have won this fixture before in a half closed stadium, and where our record is very poor.

    Tomorrow night v Hearts !!

    Why am I “anxious” !!!!

The consultant RD is work in progress – we need to give the new man time

My prediction for tomorrow night is this

Not the same team that started second half on Sat

We will struggle to score early and take the pressure out of the game

They will score at some point

We will not look like a team that can donate

All of the above has been the story do far

I want us to look like a team that is in total control – look like we will score every time we attack – look confident – and look like we are playing for the manager

    I live in hope

  8. R.I.P john divers

john scored one of the finest goals i have

    seen at celtic park.

it was back in the early sixties on a winters

    day.

there was a breakaway down the right

the ball was crossed at speed at head height

john was at full speed through the middle

nobody thought he would reach the ball

but he took off and was horizontal when

he connected with his forehead on the

18yard line, the ball flew into the top

    corner.

of all the great goals over the years this

    one sticks in the mind

    god bless you johny

So sad to hear the news of Johnny Divers. Being from Dumbarton i had the privelige of knowing him in not just the football environment as my dad ran one of the school teams, but also as a teacher to a group of rowdy Celtic daft St Pats High teenagers…..though knowing he played for Celtic made us all look up to him.

For a teacher he was a cool guy (with an excellent taste in cars as he drove a beautiful alfa Romeo back in the day!), quietly spoken and an excellent Economics teacher.

One story i have of him was when someone who was excellent at football at schoolboy level was talking during class rather than paying attention. He made the pupil in question come down to the front of the class and do keepy ups with a tennis ball to see how good he was as he was obviously too good to pay attention……mr Divers then had a go at the keepy up of the tennis ball and won hands down. He said to the pupil laughingly now if an Economics teacher in his 50s can beat you at keepy uppy you had better pay attention!!!

As for his influence on me. Well i now have a degree in Economics and have never looked back.

    RIP Mr Divers

Interesting assessment on players brought in this summer

Based on performance to date – and yes early days

    Denayer excellent

    Tonev ok to good

    Musako excellent

    Gusset to good to excellent

    Skeptovic ok

So the 4 we Loan look like very good value

The one we buy jury us out at the moment

But overall much better than Derek Balde Puki !!

  12. Gary Hooper came from the English Championship as top scorer and was a success. Meanwhile we have Stefan Scepovic coming to us from the Spanish second tier with a good CV having scored 28 goals last season. Anybody know how good that level of football is in Spain?

  13. The Hertz……………

Another game in the context of the new regime.

Who knows what team will be selected, even less if the team selected will”turn-up” on the nicht……..

What I hope happens is that Ronny is supported properly by Jonny and Broonie.

They know exactly what this game is all about.

Jonny and Broonie – let’s be ‘aving you.

    Thanks Richie #TeamOscarForever

For a relatively quiet guy he had a presence about him.

I will ask my dad about him as they taught together at St Pats and both played for Celtic so he will no doubt have a lot of good stories about John, but I know how highly he held him. However, I also know that he was not keeping too well recently unfortunately.

  17. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

Does any club in the leagues north or south of the border currently pay it’s employee’s the living wage? If I remember at the time of the AGM last year when it was kicked out no club did. Celtic could show it’s historic spirit by introducing this and possibly being the first club to do so.

I think it was Bankier last year who got up at the AGM and spoke about this and said it would cost £500K to implement. A small price to pay to show your employee’s are valued and matter to you.

  18. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

hankray, The Exiled Tim is your man for that. He’s forever saying we could pick up great talent from the Spanish lower leagues.

  19. Joe Filippis Haircut on

To be fair Stefan has not had any real service so it is to early to judge the player I did notice on Saturday that Guidetti was losing the head with his fellow players as he was getting no service so that needs working on . I think once they break there duck it might relax them and goals will flow. H.H.

  20. One thing that strikes me about continental footballers, speaking of forwards in particular, they all seem to have problems when it comes to competing in the air. I noticed Scepovic against the Austrians he didn’t win one header last week, yet we hear he ‘s supposed to be good in the air. The big Dutchman we had a few years ago was an exception he was quite superb in the air.

  21. Signed..petition..shocking if the club dont pay people a living wage…what will PL do when MILLIBAND makes it £8 an hour….aw wait, that aint till 2020…phew….and where is BERGET?????

Only part in jest do I offer the following:

Somehow, we (as a nation) probably need to get used to the idea of there being a sizeable proportion of our society prepared to thole the indignity of ‘relative poverty’.

Of course, it’s not dirt-poor poverty, in the sense that few in this group will show obvious signs of malnutrition, however much their life expectancy might be adversely affected.

It’s easy to accept that the Welfare system is very far from perfect – and far removed from what it was originally intended to address.

Anyone with an ounce of compassion ought to be able to admit that hitting the poor with a big stick is as unjust as incentivising the already rich with an even bigger carrot.

However, somehow we need to get used to the idea of there being a disaffected underbelly in our society which is prepared to thole low levels of prosperity and attainment. The fact of it now being multi-generational only makes matters worse.

And I’m not for one second suggesting it’s okay for us (as a nation) to wring our hands and give up on this matter. It’s just that (IMHO) we’ll never be able to solve this dilemma to everyone’s satisfaction.

Perhaps what we need is a return to an era of military adventure and high infant mortality, and end this nonsense of immunising everyone against every potentially fatal disease.

[Lest there be any doubt: that last bit is a (sick) joke …]

benefit delays are cause by mathematically inept bankers. Come on now ! me and you have had this conversation many times in the past and with 1 in 10 civil servants due to lose their jobs next year. It is going to become even more inefficient. That the treasury benefits from these delays just happens to be an unintended side effect.

I agree with Ernie this is what we as a nation voted for bring it on !!

  26. Acgr,

I don’t think there are any clubs who have signed up for it.

Last time I checked (wee while ago) there were only 12 companies in the whole country who had

  27. £500,000 is not a small price, it’s a significant chunk of our turnover. Maybe if we were selling 50,000+ full priced season tickets it would be a go-er. Just now it would be irresponsible, we could be making big losses next season.

  28. 67 European winners

Definitely early days at least he comes with a goalscoring record unlike some of the others who were projects.
