Ibrahim chance to reboot potential at Celtic

493

Celtic have completed the signing of 20-year-old Nigerian, Rabiu Ibrahim subject to a medical, after he was released by PSV Eindhoven earlier this month.   Rabiu is known as a creative-central midfielder, a role that Celtic have played possibly as few as a dozen times in the last decade.

After leaving Nigeria full of promise as a 17-year-old the player failed to make the desired impact in Portugal and the Netherlands, but will still be regarded as a development project by the Celtic technical staff.  His short history in Europe, with tales of agents and representation investors already has enough material for a short novel, which will not have aided development.

The job for Celtic is to get Rabiu plugged back into his potential.  It remains to be seen what role he is deployed in when he gets the chance.

Welcome to Celtic, Rabiu.

Various media outlets are reporting that Southampton have offered Gary Hooper triple his current salary.

Southampton, or any other club, are not legally entitled to talk to the player without first obtaining Celtic’s permission, and that would only happen after both parties had agreed a transfer fee.

So where does the media get this information? Is it just the usual idle speculation and gossip? Have the Scottish media made it up to try and unsettle the Celtic striker?

Surely Southampton themselves cannot put that information out into the public domain, or it would be tantamount to tapping up a player under contract to another club.

I have tried and cannot find any direct quote from anyone connected to Southampton Football Club which mentions any salary offer.

All I can see is, “Southampton are prepared to offer . . .” and “It is reported that Southampton are offering . . .”.

I find it very telling that the Scottish media reported the first Southampton bid, and the subsequent follow-up, both of which were rejected by Celtic. Then Gary himself speaks out and tells the world he is very happy at Celtic and has no intention of going anywhere, immediately followed by the fresh media reports of the triple salary on offer.

The timing stinks in all this.

In the latest available accounts for Southampton FC (June 2010), their weekly wage bill for 153 footballers (yes, that’s 153) and 60 admin staff was £204,000.

The DR would have us believe without putting forward any evidence to back it up that Southampton would make available 18% of that cost (£36,000 per week) for just one player whose previous experience in England was with the giants of Scunthorpe?

Liar, liar, pants on fire, Keevins.

PS I see on the FF board that one poster is reporting a lot of references on here to Cui Bono and wants to know if that’s CFC latest signing target

    Hunbelievable?

So when the transfer window closes, and Gary Hooper is still a Celtic player, will the same media monkeys praise him to the hilt for “his tremendous show of loyalty” and for “turning his back on tripling his salary to stay in Scottish Football”?

No, of course not. It’s more likely to be “Celtic now have an unhappy player on their hands.”

You want to know why Celtic didn’t pay 2.4m for a player and you don’t even know his name?

So really, you want Celtic to sign ANYBODY as long as he costs a fair whack?

  8. No Tom why didn’t we pay 2.5m for a goal scorer and why did we buy bangura when

He was not a proven goal scorer

For last 8 transfer windows Celtic managers gave asked Peter lawell

To buy an experienced proven goal scorer

  9. so did the FTT close yesterday or have they found another excuse to drag this out?

    Anyway.

A fellow Tim collegue of mine (really intelligent ghuy – obviously) overheard 2 hun colleagues of ours discussing their predicament. One collegue says to the other, “why would the playing side of Rangers be punished for the business side with a 10 point deduction”. Now forgiving their understanding of the severity of their predicament if they lose the FTT these bears really don’t join up the dots do they!

Hatred can be such a destructive emotion but your eloquence has trumped the idiot on Radio Snyde who tried to dismiss Reiperman and the Celtic support’s argument as predicated on nothing more than hate.

  20. Morning All,

WORRIED Hearts chiefs have asked Rangers to settle their £800,000 bill for Lee Wallace immediately – and have offered them a huge discount to get the cash up front.

Record Sport can reveal the troubled Tynecastle club are prepared to wipe more than £100,000 off Wallace’s £1.5million price tag so long as the Ibrox club – themselves staring financial disaster in the face – cough up the money in one go.

Wallace, right, signed for the SPL champs last summer in a deal which tied Rangers into paying three separate lump sums over a two-year period.

The first payment of £700,000 was made when Wallace first made the move across the M8.

But Rangers still owe Hearts two further instalments – to be paid in July of this year and next – of £500,000 and £300,000.

At the turn of the year, with Vladimir Romanov struggling to meet his first-team squad’s monthly wage bill, Hearts tabled the proposal they believe would suit both parties – increasing their cash flow in the short term while handing Rangers a longer- term bargain.

But although they were prepared to negotiate and could possibly have been persuaded to slice even more off the overall fee, they are still waiting on a response from Ibrox.

Now, with fears growing that Rangers could be forced into administration as they await a verdict from their legal battle against HMRC, Hearts are worried they might receive only a fraction of the cash they are due for Wallace.

Rangers could face this nightmare scenario if they lose the tax tribunal, over Employee Benefits Trust payments, which ended in Edinburgh yesterday.

A final verdict could be two months away but Hearts are still willing to sit around the table with owner Craig Whyte to discuss some sort of compromise before his own financial situation becomes any more perilous.

Hearts are still battling to keep their own heads above water following a bitter wages dispute with their first-team squad.

On Tuesday they were hit with an SPL disciplinary charge after failing to pay their players on time for a fourth successive month.

A source said: “There is a danger here that, if the situation at Rangers should worsen and the club tips into administration, Hearts are simply added to a list of creditors. If that happens they could lose a fortune on this deal.

“But Rangers also stand to save a fortune by entering into some kind of compromise agreement.

“It’s a sad reflection on the overall state of the Scottish game when two of the biggest clubs in the country are so desperate for cash at the same time.”

  22. Rod Stewart continues the family tradition by introducing his son Alistair to his beloved Celtic FC

He’s a born and bred Londoner, with both his youngest sons coming into the world in the same city.

But Rod Stewart’s heart will always bleed green for his beloved Celtic Football Club.

Keen to get his son Alistair, six, into football as early as possible, the rocker was spotted with the blond boy as the Celtic-Dundee game in Scotland last night.

Now let me explain the offside rule: Rod Stewart and his son Alistair watch the Celtic-Dundee game in Glasgow yesterday

And rather than ask for special treatment in VIP seats, the 67-year-old rocker was happy to huddle amongst the spectators at Celtic Park in Glasgow.

Born in North London to a Scottish father and English mother, Stewart has always been proud of his Celtic roots.

He’s such a huge fan of Celtic F.C., he’s even mentioned the team in his 1977 song You’re In My Heart.

And perhaps his attendance at the Scottish Premier League match proved a lucky charm with his team beating Dundee 2-1.

Blending in: Stewart and Alistair sat amongst other spectators at the Scottish Premier League match

Missing out on the game was Alistair’s baby brother Aiden, 11 months, and mother Penny Lancaster.

The boys’ footie session comes as Lancaster revealed her battle with regaining her pre-baby figure following Aiden’s birth.

While admitting breast-feeding helped her lose weight, she also started a healthy eating plan and enrolled the help of a personal trainer.

  24. Goalkeeper Fraser Forster has attributed his fine form in Celtic’s 11-match winning SPL streak to yoga.

Celtic have claimed 11 Clydesdale Bank Premier League wins on the bounce in a run that stretches back to November.

Forster, who is on loan from Newcastle for a second successive season, made a crucial penalty save in December’s win over Hearts as part of the run and believes he is benefiting from goalkeeper coach Steve Woods’ penchant for yoga.

Forster said on the club’s website, celticfc.net: “I did it years ago at Newcastle but Woodsy was very keen on it.

“I think the lads who have done it have really felt the benefits from it.

“Yoga has really caught on in recent years, especially goalkeeping-wise.

“Brad Friedel does a lot of it and he’s still playing in his 40s. Shay Given does it quite a lot too and he’s in great shape at 35.

“It’s just a case of improving your flexibility and it’s brilliant for a goalkeeper. Stretching that extra inch might make a big difference. “It’s something I find beneficial and I enjoy it.”

He added: “Confidence is really high just now. Everyone is delighted with how the last couple of months have gone, so hopefully we can keep that going.

“At the start of the season there were so many injuries and the back four was chopping and changing so it’s terrific having everyone fit again to give us a more balanced squad.”

  25. Tom McLaughlin on

    maccargo –

It reads to me as Hearts wanting their money now, before Rangers go belly-up and they get sod all.

Typlical of the DR to spin it as Hearts desperate for the money now to cover wages.

In any case, I have no sympathy. Hearts knew the Tax Case was on-going, so why accept payment by instalments?

    Crazy.

  26. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

A wee fairy story to tell your kids. Based on a true story.

Once upon a time there was an evil team called rangers. rangers had an evil henchman called hearts. They were guilty of much cheating, bigotry and vile behaviour. One day rangers signed a player called wallace off of hearts and agreed to pay in installments.

The cheating, bigotry and vile behaviour finally took its toll on rangers and they died in 2012. When they died they took hearts to the grave with them.

….and they all lived happilly ever after.
