Icelanders against Celtic, and the warnings

120

After nine consecutive years in the European Cup, Celtic’s first game in Europe’s second tournament saw them win 0-2 away to Valur in Iceland on their way to a 9-0 aggregate win.  In more recent times, we faced KR Reykjavik in 2014 and Stjarnan a year later, both in Champions League qualification round 2.

Although the aggregate score across these Champions League qualifiers was 11-1, we had to wait until a minute before halftime to take the lead in the first leg at Celtic Park against Stjarnan.  The Ronny Deila era got underway when our young right-winger, Callum McGregor, scored a memorable winner six minutes from time against KR.

I have no recollection of the Valur game and I suspect few of us remember Big Yogi hitting five in a 10-1 friendly win over Throttur from Iceland in 1962, but since then, games against the Icelanders have been turgid.  Still, no complaints, we will not be remembered fondly for our adventurous play against Barcelona.

KR will have watched how Kilmarnock frustrated us and will attempt to do the same tonight.  They will double up in the wings and pack their 18-yard line, venturing forward for free kicks and to support long punts in the direction of a sole striker.  You and I will be on the edge of our seats until Celtic go two ahead.  Between now and then, you can worry about Gibraltar, or maybe England’s elimination from Euro 2016.  The warnings are out there.

  1. It’s not that long ago that Iceland were slaying all before them in The Euros! Well, 4 years ago now, 2 draws and 2 wins, 1 against the Auld enemy, going out to the eventual runners-up France 6-2. They’ll be organised alright and won’t lack a fighting spirit, need to bring our A game, por cierto.

  2. The only experience I have with wife’s is the walking in front of the TV when a goal is scored. It happened so frequently that if Celtic were struggling we used to ask her to do the magic and walk in front of the TV.

We should try 2 up front with Edouard and Kimala,

  3. St Stivs , I was through in Edinburgh for a stag night when we won the treble in 2001.

I was presently surprised at the number of people going about with Celtic flags and Celtic songs being sung .

Paul Larkin who has published a number Of books about Celtic plus made three documentaries about us is probably the most notable Celtic supporter from Edinburgh. One of Pat Stanton’s sons is a Celtic supporter. St Anthony on Celtic Underground interviewed Pat a few years ago and he mentioned it.

There’s a large Celtic support in the Lothian full stop but in Edinburgh you have full sized buses Edinburgh no1, Leith and I think the Watt University still run one. Embramike may know more, down the coast there’s us a mini bus, Tranent much larger and Dunbar and Eyemouth run mini’s too. And Livi run a full bus from the hotel at the big roundabout. Furthermore loads by car which used to be my gig until I found the delights of Prestonpans CSC👏👏

Huge game tonight, these are the most important games for the club financially. Will be a tough game I’m sure but in saying that if we cant win this game we dont deserve to be anywhere near the group stages.

Never met Lennybhoy but I wish him all the best for his birthday today 🍀🍀🍀

Hope his team wins tonight too it would be a fitting tribute and the least he deserves

  7. For those advocating Frimpong on the right wing, I would point out that, when asked who the best footballer at Celtic was- Jeremie siad that it was James Forrest.

But, since James was crap vs Killie (along with a dozen team mates) – we should drop him for now, and book a provisional airport taxi just in case he has two less-than-stellar games in a row.

  8. it would appear that the new Adidas logo is only partially completed and still has the 3 stripes to be added to the seats .

  9. Ivan Toney in the last year of his contract , makes sense to wait until Christmas and sign a pre contract with whoever then , or for a bidding club to go in now with a derisory offer to try and get him now.

A bit nervous about tonight but still expect us to win. Going for 3-0 with two of the goals in the latter stages of the game.

Are we still in for Hickey or has he signed for BM?

    Humility and confidence CAN coexist.

If we can’t get a regulation victory at home to a team from Iceland who’ve not restarted great themselves we might as well pack it in.

    Press high and win 6-2.

Then get busy and sharp at Tannadice and deliver any kind of win.

Then take that into next midweek.

    Hail hail

not good at the old copy and paste but led to believe the seat logo has still to be completed , so should be ok.

You winding me up big fella ?

    2-0 I will relax a tad :O)

  14. Expect the same old side tonight despite hoping for changes in the line up, even although NL’s press conference hinted at faithfulness to underperforming players, it caught up with us in France and Rugby Park where complacency was, too ready to blame the playing surface before a ball was kicked.

If Olivier Ntcham doesn’t get a start soon he’s wide open to an ‘acceptable bid’, if we’re reportedly weighing up our Turnbull deal, as we don’t do bucketloads of class on our bench, week in week out. The holy trilogy of Forrest, Brown, McGregor, will be tested this season and Europe against an Icelandic side is a good place to breath new life into the side as any, given we’re not overloaded with domestic games.

El Younoussi really has to start his season soon, or he’s the new invisible where he certainly was at Kilmarnock along with too many others, including Jeremie Frimpong who lacks amongst other things, stamina.

With the virtual crowd baying for the introduction of a new hero in Ajeti, the five sub rule should service the need, for a locked down support that have been digustingly treated after ponying up savings and budgets on a ticket that guarantees us nothing but hope.

    Score forecast ; Celtic 5 Rekyavik 0

  15. Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes.

Going out for dinner with Mrs. LB so won’t get to see the game but I have faith we will easy.

    Until we meet again…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

Sky backing up what TB said last night about Toney, he has refused to go to Brentford (£10 million bid). Apparently he has said that he wants to play at the highest level with Sky turning that into he wants to play in the Premiership.

    ___

To be fair, he actually said he wants to play in the premiership

  17. I always thought the Paradise Windfall was for supporters to make a paper aeroplane of your ticket at half time, the app lets you get a virtual ticket and regular prompts for when you’ve not bought one yet. 🌝

Would be nice if someone, anyone, responded to one of my posts. Even if it’s just to tell me I’m talking pish.!

I was just about to wish you a Happy Birthday then I saw you posting this:`…. so won’t get to see the game….` .

So, how can you possibly have a Happy birthday? Does your restuarant of choice have a TV with access to the VST?

    Have a great time,

  22. Over the previous three seasons, Celtic`s best players have been: Brown,Forrest and McGreggor.
