Idah news drops like steel infrastructure at an old stadium

152

With impresario timing, Celtic dropped confirmation that Adam Idah signed a five-year contract yesterday evening.  Enough time for Tuesday’s football to be disembowelled (agree, a horrid term, but if you read/listened in, you’ll know where I’m coming from), and setting today’s news agenda ahead of the League Cup weekend.  If you know your history, Jock Stein was a master of the dark arts; good to see we still put our toe in these waters.

As a consequence, our striker population doubled.  Two is insufficient, three is about right, I expect another striker before the close.  Feel for those who get their thrills from Celtic not signing players.

The news that there would be no Celtic fans at Ibrox this season, and vice versa, is disappointing.  Celtic were in the driving seat here.  Last season ended with a clear plan from both clubs on how to resolve things, but the Ibrox club are in no condition to make assurances for January.  If we need to give them more time to get their (Big) house in order, fair enough.  I just hope we are back before the whole place is shuttered.

  1. The news that there would be no Celtic fans at Ibrox this season, and vice versa, is disappointing.

i was in 118 for the killie game, right next to what would be the segregation line (and netting) for the future “rangers” allocation.

the area round to the killie 100 supporters was packed with pay as you go fans, with only a little sprinkle of unoccupied seats up the very corner.

i did feel for these fans, to be displaced to allow for brer hun in.

it is unfair , and unsafe no matter what fencing are built outside.

meanwhile for sept 1st fixture, and a general sale of tickets, i really wish celtic to make every effort to sell all the seats available .

and i hope for those who have season cards to actually ensure someone is in the seat.

with no segregation i would love for us to actually break the 60,000 for real.

    cmon you bhoys in green.

  2. No Huns in paradise? Inevitable this season.

  3. Never say a transfer is done because players and their agents will say and do anything for more money, unless it is the great James McGrory.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjfZwcKA_Qg

In the summer of 1928 he turned down an offer from Arsenal to become the highest paid footballer in Britain because he could not bear to leave Parkhead. It later turned out that the Celtic board were banking on Jimmy McGrory’s departure as a way of boosting the club’s bank account and so riled were they by his refusal of Arsenal’s offer (£10,000 transfer) that they secretly paid him less than his teammates for the rest of his career. When he later discovered this dastardly deed Jimmy McGrory simply said:

“Well it was worth it just to pull on those Green and White Hoops”.

Impresario (rather than impressive) timing is accurate IMHO.

  5. “I felt McGrory of Arsenal did not sound right. It wasn’t like McGrory of Celtic”.

In 1928 Celtic’s greatest ever goal scorer Jimmy McGrory turned down the chance to sign for Arsenal. They had offered him a blank cheque.

I agree with most of today’s article, but my hope is that the place is shuttered before we are back and we never have to go there (or anywhere else involving any incarnation of the hun) again.

Adam’s signing brings the level of effective capability and capacity back to the end of last season level … when we played our best stuff.

In that basis, IMHO, this window has moved up a notch to satisfactory.

We’re still down a young striker … but Rocco really didn’t give us much.

I expect “Ins” to be intertwined with “Outs” over the next two weeks.

(If one looks at transfer activity across Europe that is the new normal).

Two or three in / four or five out would do me.

Biggest ponderable is the CB position.

We could aim to offload Yuki and leave it at that.

Yuki and Gustaf? We’d need to think hard about a new CB

Yuki, Gustaf plus one of Stephen or Maik? A new competitive CB is a must have.

If we sign another very decent winger, I’d be tempted to invite Hibs to take Yang goes a year.

    If Matt leaves ….

    …. Continues ad nauseam.

I’m tired just typing this stuff.

Fair play to the folks managing it.

  9. Rangers have dismissed Blaine McConnell just days after hiring him as their new head of marketing.

A reliable Gers outlet, who have strong links with the club, reported via their official X account on Wednesday (14 August) that McConnell, who turned out to be a Celtic fan, was “brought in on a short-term consultancy contract”. However, it is understood that he’s now left Ibrox after just two days in the role.

It had earlier emerged that McConnell is a Celtic fan with old social media posts coming to light.

Rangers in yet another high-level blunder

It’s just been one thing after another, hasn’t it?

Normally, it wouldn’t matter which team someone supported when they were hired in behind-the-scenes roles. However, in Glasgow, it’s a bit different.

There’s absolutely no way that Glasgow Rangers Football Club should be having anyone in their team, staff, board or anything else who’s a Celtic fan.

  10. Tim Malone Will Tell on

Any rumours on the “third striker”?

Someone old, someone new, someone borrowed – but probably not someone blue?

  11. bournesouprecipe on

Two weeks of the transfer market left as the squad returns to where it was, at the Cup

    final.

Protracted negotiations! or dithering ! public comments reflect both, two games won, top of the league, but still a nailed on certainty to sell, sell, sell the family jewels. Not before the valuation is met mind, it now returns to what Brendan Rodgers said to to Michael and Chris about his ‘requirements’ .

With your only domestic rival in perpetual free fall, Celtic buying locally seems further away than David Turnbull, as BR can’t get ‘potential’ out the door quickly enough Vata, Kelly, Lawal all going, or gone and that’s only the home grown talent. Brendan Rodgers wants his Celtic players of a certain standard, and the board of Directors, can’t hide forever behind the balance sheet.

  12. Celtic doing to Atalanta what Norwich were doing to us – i.e. looking after the interests of the club and obtaining the best price for their in-demand asset. No incompetence – no executive(s) unpopular with 5% of the supporters ‘sticking an oar in’ – no taking the fans for granted; just modern business practice in the crazy world of football finance.

I’m convinced Matt will go to Italy as Atalanta seem as persistent as we were with Adam. It will happen in the next few days, I’m sorry to say. I hope we can have a revolving door scenario with a replacement arriving contemporaneously.

Transfer windows always see deals done spasmodically and the vagaries affect Celtic as much as any other club. Our success on the field of play should make us proud. Our probity should make us proud. Our financial success should make us proud. A small number of supporters find this hard – I don’t!

  13. Scullybhoy @ 12.29

Kenny McDowal was our reserve team coach for ten years even though he was a r1ngers fan, joining them as assistant manager to the cardigan.

He was extremely successful with us showing a great degree of professionalism.

  14. The shambles at Ibrox is always pleasing to watch, but they’ve gone up a level here.

However, we just need to focus on ourselves.

The usual arguments amongst the support every summer will subside if we can improve our squad in the next fortnight, although I’m sure will arise when we have a disappointing CL result.

Hopefully Paul will stop sniping at fellow fans, but from his island of pomposity I doubt it.

An £8.5m fee usually comes with a healthy weekly wage, so it’s reasonable to expect a few others needing to be moved on. Not always easy.

Loads to be done yet but this week has been a good one.

If Matt goes (as seems likely) , our most important signing will be a replacement who can do what Matt does , otherwiswe we will be less than we were last season . That will probably require spending more than we spend on Idah as there are very few &1.5m frogs in the pond .

If he hasn’t found a club by 31-August, R2ngers will sign him and pay him chump change.

Celtic and Sevco agreed a way forward for allowing away fans back to the derby.

Celtic applied for planning permission and done the necessary work including netting.
