If not on the wing, where does Maeda find space?

495

Brendan Rodgers post-match press conference in Yokohama was interesting on two fronts.  Almost a year after sustaining a shoulder injury, the manager revealed Kyogo did not start the game as the same issue left him short of the fitness levels even his team-mates were at.  If the medics have not resolved the issue by now, it is likely Kyogo will have a persistent weakness in the joint.

A more positive note was struck when discussing Daizen Maeda, Rogers said, “I thought Daizen was outstanding. I like him more through the middle. I think he does a good job on the side, but there is a reason he plays for Japan through the middle.”

This could be taken for a platitude to a player who scored a hat-trick, but Brendan added detail, “I like players at the top end who can really press the game and Daizen can definitely do that.

“It’s just about adding to players’ development. Daizen is still a young player who can improve. Of course, his strength is running in behind, but sometimes there won’t always be that space. So, can we develop his game and get him into areas he can work the defenders?”

That last point is critical.  In 90% of Celtic’s domestic games there is no space for Daizen to exploit, at first pass, his greatest asset is unsuited to our game.  “Can we develop his game and get him into areas he can work the defenders?”

I have no idea what that will look like.  The best example of Daizen at Celtic was at Ibrox in January, when he ran through the opposition defence to open the scoring, but that game was ultimately rescued by the innate ability of Kyogo to find space inside the box.  When fit, Kyogo will remain out top striker this season.

It has been four years since Brendan watched a bank of five defenders on the edge of their box with another four a few yards in front, so close, they could almost hold hands, his memory of what’s in store may be more generous to our standard opponents than they deserve.  Working them is entirely desirable, I just don’t see where Daizen will do this, if not on the wing.

    Evening all.

Just back from an informal family gathering, celebrating my Father in Law’s 80th birthday.

John Joseph McGhee, born in Glelmavis, butcher to trade, the hardest man I’ve ever known,

Loves White & McKay, roll ups and Cowboy movies.

He only greets when John Wayne gets shot.

    ……………….

John Wayne ” DIED” in TWELVE Movies.

    The Shootist.

    The Alamo.

The Man who shot Liberty Valance.

    The Cowboys.

    Sands of Iwo Jima.

    The Fighting Seabees.

    Wake of the Red Witch.

    The Sea Chase.

    The high and the Mighty.

    West of the Divide.

    Central Airport.

    Hangmans House.

I have never seen the last Four Films above, so I dont know how he ” Died” in those Movies ?

He was Shot dead, drowned, Speared and he was DEAD at the start of the Film ” The Man who shot Liberty Valance”, as the story is told in FLASHBACK…..I think the Film implied that he had died from natural causes, old age etc ?

Funny enough, I can NOT remember John Wayne getting a ” DOING” from anyone in the Films that I have seen.

The ” SQUARE GO” with Victor Maglagan in ” The Quiet Man” ended up in a DRAW…If I remember correctly ?

    LOL

Big Jimmy – interesting list of John Wayne movies.

Like you I’ve never heard of the last four …. but then again he made c.140 films in his career?

Don’t remember him getting a doing in any films although he did get a few in the divorce court.

    How SMSM.

    Insert a club.

    Insert a player.

Don’t insert detergent or fabric softener.

    Spin.

When spin cycle ends, instead of smelling like a fresh summer meadow, the output smells like a country pancake.

  12. Just got a ticket for JF game.

Jus a heads up (apol if already been mentioned) wasn’t able to get my own seat in main stand – not sure if closed but zero tickets available in there. Also ticket is posted not print at home so allow a few days and don’t leave to last minute. Last thing – get out and support JF – a great servant to our club.

There was a time slot for ST holders to buy their own seat for JF game but that passed a few weeks ago.

I managed to secure my ST seat but season cards not activated. I got a paper ticket through the post.

    Looking forward to the match.

I met Oliver Reed in The Pub in Malta in the late 80s

    What a guy.

  15. I like Carl Starfelt but the rules apply. If the right bid comes in, he goes. There is apparent interest, it won’t be Moscow (basket case) but might that another 22/23 first teamer leaves. We gotta hold our nerve. The big Dutch lad might then be the replacement.

Very pleased that Liel is staying. Like a lot and expect his game to go up a notch this season. Hope he accepts the contract offer as a result.

As Far East tour now ended & BR’s assessment over would expect an interesting time ahead.

For my sins, watched 60 minutes of der hun. No identity, the odd passage of interplay and very little pace in their new recruits. Play from back, and then a big diagonal lump. They also put 11 men back to defend free kicks now too. Can’t really understand their signing strategy either. They seem to have acquired lots of the same kind of player but limited slots. Their wage bill must also be astronomical. They’re going all-in for this year’s big ECL prize money but of course have little margin for error (Euro qualifiers coming quick and league needs an immediate and faultless start).

  16. BIGJIMMY Firstly good to see you are back on here, hopefully you will feel better,Jimmy where is Glelimavis.

  17. # Jimmy McGrory was the top League goalscorer in Europe in seasons 1926-27 (49 goals) and 1935-6 (50 goals)

    # In 445 appearances in the two major domestic competitions he scored 472 goals (398 in the Scottish League, 74 in the Scottish Cup)

    # He won 5 Scottish Cup winners medals

    # He managed the Celtic team which won the 1957 League Cup final by a British record margin in a domestic cup final of 7-1 against Rangers

    # In July 2007 IFFHS (International Federation of Football History & Statistics), produced a survey that put Jimmy McGrory as the 8th greatest striker of all time, a great accolade and the highest ranking Briton.

On this day 1945 our new manager started.

  18. Terrific news that Liel Abada seems set to say at Parkhead.

This boy will be a superstar and BR will help him achieve that. I genuinely believe that when he eventually leaves he will smash our transfer records.

It can only be good news for us that he has to learn, adapt and perform on the European stage.

    —————

They know they will get free kicks galore in the SPFL and have bought tall players to maximise that advantage. Set pieces were their most successful way of scoring against us under Ange and might be the same with Brendan, and they’ve basically tooled up to maximise the output from Tavpen’s deliveries.

Hopefully we can destroy them playing football as we used to do under BR and render that advantage meaningless.

    😃👍🇮🇪🏆🏆🏆🍀

    Agree 100%.

Abada is a cracker and wasn’t fully utilised under Ange due to not signing the extension.

Here’s hoping BR turns him into the star he looks like being.
