If not on the wing, where does Maeda find space?

495

Brendan Rodgers post-match press conference in Yokohama was interesting on two fronts.  Almost a year after sustaining a shoulder injury, the manager revealed Kyogo did not start the game as the same issue left him short of the fitness levels even his team-mates were at.  If the medics have not resolved the issue by now, it is likely Kyogo will have a persistent weakness in the joint.

A more positive note was struck when discussing Daizen Maeda, Rogers said, “I thought Daizen was outstanding. I like him more through the middle. I think he does a good job on the side, but there is a reason he plays for Japan through the middle.”

This could be taken for a platitude to a player who scored a hat-trick, but Brendan added detail, “I like players at the top end who can really press the game and Daizen can definitely do that.

“It’s just about adding to players’ development. Daizen is still a young player who can improve. Of course, his strength is running in behind, but sometimes there won’t always be that space. So, can we develop his game and get him into areas he can work the defenders?”

That last point is critical.  In 90% of Celtic’s domestic games there is no space for Daizen to exploit, at first pass, his greatest asset is unsuited to our game.  “Can we develop his game and get him into areas he can work the defenders?”

I have no idea what that will look like.  The best example of Daizen at Celtic was at Ibrox in January, when he ran through the opposition defence to open the scoring, but that game was ultimately rescued by the innate ability of Kyogo to find space inside the box.  When fit, Kyogo will remain out top striker this season.

It has been four years since Brendan watched a bank of five defenders on the edge of their box with another four a few yards in front, so close, they could almost hold hands, his memory of what’s in store may be more generous to our standard opponents than they deserve.  Working them is entirely desirable, I just don’t see where Daizen will do this, if not on the wing.

Thanks for the link. It was flawless.

  6. Good for the team to get a win. We were less slick going forward, especially 2nd half, than we had been in the first game, but the 2nd half “reserves” were less exposed than in the Yokohama game. Scales and Lawal blocked shots and won headers- not sure they have the football skills to challenge for a place though. Holm was very quiet but tidy. Siegrist, at last, had a good game.

  7. SFTB, thanks for the link, managed to catch the last part of the game. Big Lawall was as good as I’ve seen him, Odin looked very assured and wasn’t wee BernieBhoy a star, after making a hash of his pass forward he just chased it for about 50 metres and forced the keeper into the error. Great work out for Brendan’s Bhoys.

  8. Good runout. From 6 conceded to a clean sheet. Holm will come good when he gains a bit of confidence. Was neat but safe. Vata good. Prune the squad now Brendy and up the quality at LB, LW, CAM & GK.

Peter Grant must get paid by the word. Dreadful stuff.

Glad to see the Apple guy in as a NED. Celtic TV is an awful product. Need to find a way to engage with those abroad and at home.

Good game and work out for a lot of players.

Celtic won both half’s with two different sides, and no daft errors in defence.

Squad needs thinning as Brendan has said on Celtic TV not just some players who didn’t make the trip to Japan, injuries require covering and Nawrocki gives us a fresh option for first pick CB especially with CCV still to fully recover.

Laughable SMSM summer coverage of Celtic is a symptom of our success.

Rumours of a new keeper and Scott Bain’s new contract put Siegrist in the revolving door IMO

  13. CT67, At least 4 or 5 Academy Players 2nd half, give the kids a chance, I was delighted with them.

St. Stivs on a 2 day ban, unbelievable, a totally sound decent Poster. Hope he just laughs at it and doesn’t take the Huff.

The Mod is a Nutter but as I’ve said before I absolutely love Nutters and he makes the Blog even more enjoyable, however if we started losing good Posters then it would cease to be funny.

Enjoyed the game delighted we won for our Supporters at the game other then that, id didn’t matter.

Maeda looked good first half as did our Jamesy, great just to be watching Celtic play again.

Suck to death listening about “The Lioness’s!, it’s like the men’s England team multiplied by 3

Just can’t get women’s football, don’t mind if the Celtic women are playing the Huns , might watch a bit,but it’s a no from me……..

Even worse than woman’s football is woman’s commentating, I know it’s maybe not the right thing to say but……quite happy for them to commentate on ladies game , but if it’s an important game in men’s football it just makes me cringe.

If god forbid a woman was commentating on a Celtic game it would sound off for me I’m afraid.

    There I said it !

Hope my misses doesn’t read this

Never mind pal. If your wife objects to your comment, I’m sure a big butch macho man like yourself will give her a good slapping.

Big few weeks of outgoings. Make way for 4/5 quality first team ready players.

Versatile players as better backfill rather than the drop in quality we have currently.

BOURNE, exactly right I think. I also think that our genuine, attested, documented world record of Trebles last season has pushed some of them over the edge.

Not wanting to put a dampener on the Maeda no 9 revival ..but did we not try him on a number of occasions in that role when Kyogo was injured without success ?…still think we need another striker ..personally thought the big ex Motherwell striker Van Veen could have done a back up job for us …and guess what he has just been sold for a miserly £500k !!?
