If you think Leigh’s finished, you’ve not been paying attention

It was only a friendly and he took advantage of an error, but Patryk Klimala’s goal against Nice last night got rid of the onerous burden that comes when every striker joins a new club, he is no longer waiting on his first goal.

Patryk is still only 21, living abroad for the first time and has a whole lot of work ahead, but in these respects he is no different than several strikers who have successfully developed into top talents at Celtic in recent seasons.  We know how to transform prospects into champions, if you want to make it as a striker, this is the place to come.

I know that you and me both have a lot of time for Leigh Griffiths.  He has proven his worth repeatedly in the six years since he arrived at Celtic Park, most notably by scoring 40 goals in season 2015-16.  Since then, he has played more of a supporting role, first to Moussa Dembele and then Odsonne Edouard and he returned from off-field challenges before lockdown with an impressive scoring rate.

High standards, which would have been unrecognisable as recently as Martin O’Neill’s time, have been set at Celtic in recent years.  They have contributed to the club being the most prodigious collector of trophies in Scottish football history.  Neil Lennon is the curator of those standards and he knows more than anyone the cost if he lets them slip.

Leigh has a master’s degree in the science of ‘Prove them Wrong’.  He has been written off and returned to the top more than anyone I can remember, whatever weaknesses he has, this determination to recover is a strength many overlook.

If you think he’s finished, you’ve not been paying attention.

  1. !!BADA BING!!

Well Bada, I’m sure BBC Scotland will suspend English for having a go at someone who wasn’t there to defend themselves, that’s how they operate, isn’t it ?

I can still hear Doncaster trying in vain to explain to him the difference between a loan and an advance payment…

  2. I’d just highlight that it was the football authorities that cancelled the Ibrox match, the SPFL were out in front of Covid before Holyrood.

  3. BADA BING,

I heard English too. He was trying to give the impression that Lawwell had used language that was unnecessarily aggressive and bound to get the Scottish Government’s back-up. It was snide and showed no interest in whether what Lawwell was saying was for the good of the ordinary supporter in Scotland.

By the way, when I heard that he and Darryl Broadfoot were on the panel along with a contingent from Aberdeen, I presumed there would be no sympathy for anything involving us. I turned it off after English’s contribution.

Sorry I didn’t get back to you earlier. Great story about DD , the golf and Celtic. If he’s a big fan now I’m delighted. My info came from him to my late father in law but probably 15 year old news.

Billionaire owners who don’t throw money at clubs are never going to be popular e.g. Ashley, Glazer

I think if the team is successful and you are just a millionaire, you are a hero

Off for tapas tonight and my wife is driving. Might take the tapas theme to the bevvy and have beer, wine and whiskey 😎

  6. Someone told me that tonight`s game is available on the Virtual Ticket. Is that the case?

I notice our ST `s are sold out.Impressive.

  7. Think it’s exclusive to Premier Sports with delayed coverage on Celtic tv for Ireland and Britain.

A lot of supporters wouldn’t have even received their virtual ticket login details yet I think.

    Thanks.

On another matter. William Hill has Celtic at 3/1 this evening and Sevco at 8/13.

  9. Just in from a very family orientated food & refreshments 4hrs … rounded off by a belter of a Celtic cake with plenty of galaxy, topped off with a couple of Celtic vodka miniatures bought by wife & step daughters (Rangers fans) brought to our table by the bar manager (Rangers fan) made it all the sweeter … many thanks for the good wishes today … far too many to mention … although enjoyed BRTH’s wee post about the Bammy … a terrific but crazy Celtic boozer in so many different ways… a few old bhoys in that place who could make some of the “mineshafters” on here look like the happiest of clappers :-)

    Hail Hail to all 🍀

  10. Coneybhoy- enjoy I have had 3 cans of lager and I’m knackered after yesterday session…was meant to be in neighburs garden with a TV for game but too much feckin glaring sun and we could not get the right angle, so we gave up.

He invited me in but he already has a full house, just watch it in my own house.

    Enjoy your night

    D :)

  11. Nice have done a Lyon. They’ve started a far weaker team against Sevco.

It’s almost like the french are using us as the real test for their first team…

  12. Watched both hun games and they have set up both games in a Watenaccio formation. This might work against European opposition but in the SPFL they’ll be faced with most teams adopting the same system. So far in 135 minutes of football they have faced two mediocre teams and have not been tested. Get Kasper Dolberg Rasmussen on and see how good their defence is.

  13. An Dun @ 5:59

That’s a very interesting point. It does seem that the French teams see us as the ‘big game’ and use sevco to give some players a run out.

To see ourselves as other see us, eh?

Maybe you could ask the guy you know to ask the guy he knows whether The Great Desmondo has ever mentioned Res 12 and what He had to say about it.

While he’s at it he could also ask whether, what with Him being so kind and generous and all, whether He could see Himself reimbursing those who chipped in to fund the newspaper ad etc. Sunday Herald wasn’t it?

  15. Today’s official starting line up v Lyon……

Bain; ElHamed Bitton Welsh Bolingoli; Karamoko Soro Ntcham Robertson Henderson Klimala

Eh………….. not the strongest team we have

  18. I watched the second minute and the 65th minute of the Sevco game. If the intervening 63 minutes of sycophantic gushing was as buke inducing as those two minutes were, I would be a very empty vessel indeed.

I expect this V something trophy will now take on monumental significance in the MSSM.

  19. HOT SMOKED on 18TH JULY 2020 6:46 PM

Looks like their strongest team up against our ‘B’ squad – interesting

saving the BIG guns for PSG

  22. I think we’ve looked good so far in preseason. Tuesday will be extraordinarily tough, I hope we go in strong as PSG have a 16-0 record in their two friendlies leading up to us…
